Capsized Trawler Adrift Disappearing Act in South Africa

South Africa’s charity National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was warning fishermen and other boaters in and around the Cape Peninsula and False Bay Coast to be aware of a “barely visible” capsized boat. A few days later though, the wreck had disappeared! NSRI warned that that a large fishing vessel capsized and has been floating in a shipping lane some 9.8 miles south off Cape Point since May 1. The wreck had first been sighted by local fishermen returning from deep sea on Thursday. They reported their find to the NSRI in Simon's Town. The NSRI had inspected the hulk, but its tug was not big enough to tow it. Hence they marked it with strobe lights attached to life jackets to ensure the safety of fishermen at night.

Dead Ship – Crew Feel Like Prisoners

The Panos Earth, 75,864 dwt bulk carrier needs $500 000 (R3.6 million) to repair her generators but squabbles with insurers mean the ship is heading for her eighth week anchored in False Bay, with a disgruntled crew who want to go home, reports the 'Cape Times' newspaper. In the tangle of broken generators, the shipowner’s cash-flow problems, no funds from the insurance company and various creditors arresting the vessel, the South American crew say they’ve had enough and want to go home. Cape Africa Repairs Commence

A quayside in the Dockyard in Simon's Town has been the scene of much activity over the past week following the arrival of the bulk carrier 'Cape Africa' in False Bay last Tuesday, where she is presently at anchor some 6.9 kilometers off Simon's Town with the salvage tug 'Smit Amandla' in attendance. Salvors SMIT Salvage have announced that the second phase of the salvage operation - the repair process - will begin with the fitment of a habitat over the area of structural damage on the bulk carrier on Wednesday of this week and personnel have been hard at work in Simon's Town finalising preparatory work on the habitat, which is a massive steel structure measuring some 26m x 11m x 1,5m in size.

Cape Africa Enters Port of Cape Town

The bulk carrier 'Cape Africa', under tow by the salvage tug 'Smit Amandla', will enter the Port of Cape Town this afternoon. Yesterday evening, with the 'Cape Africa' cargo lightening operation complete and the specialized lightening vessel 'Bandar' en route to Saldanha Bay to discharge the final load of iron ore cargo removed from the bulk carrier, the convoy of tug and tow, under escort by the SMIT tug 'Pentow Service' and the oil pollution vessel 'Kuswag IV', left False Bay en route to Cape Town.
