The aging Pacific Northwest fishing fleet is either undergoing or about to undergo a long-overdo upgrade, judging by a major economic report commissioned by the Port of Seattle. Fisheries managers, seafood suppliers, yards and the supply chain all hope an accompanying surge in ship finance “lifts all boats”. For now, the newbuild count is growing apace, slowed just a bit by owners opting for major retrofits amid rich fish harvests. This fisheries upsurge comes with some rising stars of ship design-and-build for vessels set to ply the Bering and Beaufort seas.

Seattle to Host Spill Preparedness Conference

The U.S. Coast Guard and Washington Department of Ecology will host a spill preparedness conference May 20-21 at the Jackson Federal Building in Seattle. The two-day seminar is an opportunity to discuss the latest in spill-recovery theory and technology. The sessions focus on topics including remote oil sensing technology, sinking oils, software tools and best practices. "In the response business, there is no room for complacency,” said Capt. Robert Pearce, chief of response, Coast Guard 13th District. “Knowing about the latest game-changing technology is important. Opportunities are everywhere. The marine environment that dominates the Pacific Northwest is essential to the high quality of our lives.

US Coast Guard District Chief of Staff Retires

With over 30 years service under his belt, Capt. John Bingaman has retired following a ceremony held at Bay Presbyterian Church in Bay Village, Ohio. Capt. Bingaman, who grew up in Greensboro, N.C., oversaw 6,000 Coast Guard active duty, reserve, civilian and auxiliary men and women serving at 77 subordinate units and on the District staff from the 9th District Headquarters at the Anthony J. Celebrezze Federal Building in Cleveland. He is a Marine Safety and Environmental Protection Professional.

Cleveland-native Coast Guard civilian, Aidalis Mills, receives meritorious service award for promoting role of minorities, Hispanics and Latinos in the federal workforce and community. The award was presented at the Distinguished Military Awards Luncheon during the 10th Annual National Latina Symposium in Arlington, Va., Sept. 5, 2013. Great Lakes Agencies Discuss Contingencies

Hosted by the US Coastguard, about three dozen Great Lakes agency leaders from the U.S. and Canada participated in a binational multi-agency meeting, at the Anthony J. Celebrezze Federal Building in Cleveland, to discuss various emergency preparedness and security issues concerning the Great Lakes region. The meeting, titled “Strategic Surprise: Sharing Solutions for the Great Lakes,” featured a presentation by homeland security expert Dr. Stephen E. Flynn, co-director of the Kostas Research Institute for Homeland Security at Northeastern University, and facilitated discussions by Dr. Joe DiRenzo III, the deputy operational planning and anti-terrorism coordinator for Coast Guard Atlantic Area. The event was hosted by Rear Adm. Michael N. Parks, 9th Coast Guard District commander.

This Day in U.S. Coast Guard History - April 19

1813-A tremendous explosion aboard the cutter Gallatin, commanded by Master John H. Silliman (who was not aboard at the time) blew off her quarterdeck while the cutter was tied up in Charleston, South Carolina. The cutter was quickly engulfed in flames and then sank at anchor. The crew had been cleaning and storing the cutter's small arms when the explosion occurred, probably in the magazine. At least three of the crew were killed instantly and five others were seriously wounded. The cause of the explosion was never determined although rumors of sabotage were circulated at the time. 1909- Pamet River, MA- The sloop Stranger was anchored 3/4 mile SE of station. The Life-Saving crew boarded her from a surfboat.

Coast Guard - Mel Oliver Capt. to Testify

U.S Coast Guard will resume its public hearing regarding the collision on the Mississippi River that occurred July 23, 2008, between the motor vessel Tintomara and the DM932 barge and the towing vessel Mel Oliver. The hearing will resume on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. at the U.S. Federal Courthouse, 5th Floor, Courtroom C-501, Hale Boggs Federal Building, 500 Poydras Street, New Orleans, La. 70130. The Captain of the Mel Oliver is scheduled to testify during this hearing.

Coast Guard Regional Exam Center to Host Open House

The Coast Guard Regional Exam Center Puget Sound will host an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony Friday at the Jackson Federal Building in downtown Seattle. The center provides evaluation, testing and issuance of Licenses, Merchant Marine Documents, Certificates of Registry, or international certificates required by crews serving on U.S. commercial vessels. The open house will run from noon to 4 p.m. The ribbon cutting ceremony will be at 1 p.m.

USCG to Hold Meeting on Great Lakes Species Invasion

The Coast Guard will hold a public meeting on May 9 in Cleveland seeking public assistance in further preventing aquatic nonindigenous species from entering the Great Lakes from the ballast water discharged from oceangoing vessels. Specifically, the Coast Guard is exploring ways to manage the ballast water on vessels entering the Great Lakes that have so little water in their ballast tanks, they cannot pump it out and thus declare they are “No Ballast Onboard” vessels, or NOBOBs. “Protecting the Great Lakes from invasive species is an important issue for the Coast Guard. I expect that working with the public will greatly assist us in developing effective and practicable management strategies for NOBOBs,” said Coast Guard Rear Adm.

Eighth Coast Guard District Returns to NOLA

More than 150 members of the Eighth Coast Guard District staff returned to their headquarters here today after they relocated to St. Louis more than two months ago due to Hurricane Katrina. Located in the Hale Boggs Federal Building on Poydras Street, the Eighth District staff oversees the command and control duties for the Coast Guard's Eighth District, an area that covers all or part of 26 states and is the largest district in the Coast Guard. In accordance with the district's continuity of operations (COOP) plan, about 50 of the members of the Eighth District staff began deploying to St. Louis on Aug. 27, prior to Hurricane Katrina's landfall. The COOP allowed the staff to manage and support Eighth District functions from St.

FMC Sets Hearing Date For Florida Tug Squall
