German Partners Target Remote-controlled Tug Operations

MethanQuest: Test Results In for Renewable Hydrogen, Methane as a Fuel

As the maritime industry embarks on 'the path to zero', it is widely acknowledged that there is currently not a 'silver bullet' solution, nor is it likely that a solution will emerge from a vaccum. Collaboration is the path forward, and efforts such as MethanQuest offer promise.The project MethanQuest was launched in September 2018 with 29 partners from research, industry and the energy sector to work on processes for producing hydrogen and methane from renewables and for using them to achieve climate-neutral mobility and power generation.

MethaShip Project Projects Methanol as Future Fuel

The Methanol Institute has welcomed the findings of the MethaShip research project which has concluded that renewable Methanol offers a long term solution for the industry’s ambitious carbon emission reduction strategy.The MethaShip partners found that Methanol can offer a dramatic improvement in emissions reduction across multiple ship types once the IMO has established the statutory framework conditions necessary for an industry-wide reduction of CO2 emissions.“The whole shipping sector is facing major challenges with ever stricter emission regulations for ships, paired with a growing environmental awareness among ship owners and passengers alike,” says MethaShip Project Leader Daniel Sahnen of MEYER WERFT.

The Large Modifiable Underwater Mothership (MUM) brings German engineering prowess and cooperation to the fore. As the world of autonomous vehicles flourishes on land and in the air, subsea applications have proven more challenging, despite great strides in recent years to deliver fully autonomous, efficient systems at sea. A team of engineers from Germany, engineers teamed from industry and academia, are aiming to drive the subsea vehicle market further faster courtesy of a project known as the Large Modifiable Underwater Mothership, or MUM.

Beckmeyer Visits Rolls-Royce's MTU Research

Uwe Beckmeyer, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy paid a visit to MTU Reman Technologies in Magdeburg to find out more about the company’s development operations in the maritime sector. The important role the Rolls-Royce subsidiary plays in shipping is in fact a two-fold one. Beckmeyer, who also acts as Federal Government Coordinator for the maritime industry said, "The use of gas engines in maritime applications will continue to grow in significance. Against the background of the energy turnaround in Germany, the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy supports research into alternative drive systems. Beckmeyer was accompanied on his visit by Andreas Steppuhn, the parliamentary party leader of the social democrats in Saxony-Anhalt.

At Hamburg port E-mobility Project, BESIC enters crucial phase

Ten battery-operated heavy goods vehicles now transport containers between ships and the yard at the highly automated handling facility in the HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA). The aim is to charge the batteries of these container transporters when the grid has a surplus of renewable energy generated in northern Germany. The first battery-powered heavy goods vehicles in the world went into use at the HHLA Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) back in 2011. Now, a project is bringing together businesses and research institutions that are keen to find out how the batteries for these automated guided vehicles (AGVs) can be charged using surplus green power generated in northern Germany.
