Amogy Issued Feasibility Statement by Lloyd’s Register

(Photo: Amogy)

Ammonia power solutions company Amogy informs it has been awarded a feasibility statement by classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR).Amogy has developed an ammonia-to-electrical power system that splits, or “cracks,” liquid ammonia into its base elements of hydrogen and nitrogen, which then funnels the hydrogen into a fuel cell, generating power at five times the energy density of lithium batteries. The feasibility statement from LR serves as the official approval of Amogy’s Technology Qualification Plan (TQP)…

Why Ammonia Is the Fuel of the Future for Maritime Shipping

© egokhan / Adobe Stock

Commercial maritime shipping has a fuel problem. While the industry has cemented its position as the essential piece of the global supply chain—moving more than 80% of all international goods by volume—its dependence on carbon-emitting fuel has come with a high cost.Maritime shipping is responsible for roughly 3% of all greenhouse gas emissions, according to the International Maritime Organization. The longer that ships continue to run on carbon-emitting fuel, the harder it will be to reach net zero emissions by 2050 and to prevent the worst damage predicted by climate scientists.

The New 'New York'

(Photo: Sandy Hook Pilots Association)

When it came time to replace their 50-year-old station vessel New York, the Sandy Hook Pilots Association thought long and hard, weighing their options to determine the best possible solution. They traveled the country, to Houston, San Francisco and up to the Columbia River, and even to Europe—the Elbe River in Germany and Rotterdam in the Netherlands—to ride with other pilots in search of an answer.“We looked at everything from SWATH (small-waterplane-area twin hull) boats to helicopters to big boats in Europe…

Charterer incurs US$138-million liability by breach of 'safe port' warranty in the 'Ocean Victory' case. Alistair Feeney, partner of London law firm Holman, Fenwick & Willan LLP gives valuable insights via London P&I Club news. The recent decision of the Commercial Court in Gard Marine & Energy Ltd v China National Chartering Co Ltd (The Ocean Victory) [2013] EWHC 2199 (Comm) serves as a useful reminder of how far charterers' warranties of port safety extend, and the size of the liabilities that may result when such warranties are breached.

The People's Shipyard Moves Ahead

When MarineNews last visited Southeastern New England Shipyard (SENESCO) in December 2001, the yard was abuzz with barge construction activity. Upon our return however, almost one year to the day of our last visit, SENESCO, was yet again buzzing, but this time with its newest venture - the inauguration of its own drydock. Located just down the street from the shipyard's main headquarters next to General Dynamics' Electric Boat facility in Quonset Point, R.I. lies the project that SENESCO has been focused on since late last year - a new drydock that will enable the yard to perform barge repair. At the time, of MR/EN's visit in October, the company was guiding the first vessel into the new drydock - a 240-ft. (73.1-m) barge from Boston-based Modern Continental.

Anyone Want to Restore a Tugboat?

You'd think it would be easy to start a tugboat museum. First, get an old tugboat. Clean-up some rust with a pad of coarse steel wool, slap-on a coat of paint, and presto, you're ready to sit in the booth and sell tickets. Everyone would applaud your efforts because, first, everyone loves tugboats and all they represent - solid construction and earnest purpose, hard work and benevolent contributions to civilization. And second, because old tugboats, all spiffied-up, are handsome sights, an alluring environmental decoration wherever they're found. And third, because the design of tugboats, like most of society's tools, has undergone great change, and the old ones are dying-off fast. You'd think everyone would support your labors at preserving a noble cultural heritage.

New Barges for Short Sea City

Tug Vivian L. Roehrig watches-over DBL 23, one of the company's new 28,000 BBL JAK-equipped barges. K-Sea has acquired two new tugs so far this year, but still calls-in independents when things get busy. (Photo: Don Sutherland.)

The term short-sea shipping comes up aplenty these days, as the powers-that-be rediscover the practicalities and the economies of waterborne transport. The thinking is renewed and the interest revitalized, but for a lot of harbors nationwide it's deja vu. Take the island city of New York, and the multitudes of communities near and far that are joined to it by inland waters—the rivers, sounds, creeks, streams—all the way up to Albany, to Waterford and the Canal system, and to everything beyond that. There's nothing new about the short-sea shipping principle around here.

Harley Marine NY Reduces Emissions

Harley Marine NY, a subsidiary company of Harley Marine Services, Inc. is actively reducing emissions in New York Harbor. The HMS Liberty, a tug boat part of the Harley Marine NY Fleet, was repowered at Feeney Shipyard in Kingston, New York. During the repower, the 1970's vintage Detroit 149 Series engines and 3-71 generator sets were replaced with new, EPA Tier II Compliant, Cummins QSK38 engines and John Deere powered generator sets. Replacing the older engines and generators on the tug will reduce NoX and particulate emissions in the New York Harbor by 40 tons per year. This will also result in fuel savings as the newer equipment will be more efficient.
