Scottish-owned Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) has chosen Voith propulsion systems for its new hybrid ferry. Like its sister vessels, MV Hallaig and MV Lochinvar, the new hybrid ferry will be built by Ferguson Shipbuilders in Glasgow. CMAL relies on two VSP 16R5 EC/90-1 as well as two bow-tooth couplings and the Voith electronic control system. The new ferry will use the same electronic control system already installed on the MV Hallaig. Second Hybrid Ferry Launched on the Clyde

A cutting edge ferry, which is the second of two hybrid vessels, was launched on the Clyde today at Ferguson's shipyard in Port Glasgow. The ferries are being built following a Scottish Government investment worth over £20 million, which has continued the proud heritage and tradition of shipbuilding on the Clyde. The hybrid ferry MV Lochinvar is one of only two passenger and vehicle roll-on, roll-off ferries in the world to incorporate a low-carbon hybrid system of diesel electric and lithium ion battery power. The innovative vessel was launched by Mrs. Patricia Platten, wife of Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) CEO, Guy Platten.

Hybrid Ferry Project Takes Shape in Scotland

Scottish designers, engineers and shipbuilders are assembling the world’s first hybrid seagoing Ro-Pax ferries. The two revolutionary passenger and car ferries will each carry up to 150 passengers and 23 cars or two HGVs and provide a vital ferry service for a group of remote islands off the west Scottish coast. Powered by a dual diesel-electric system which reduces their fuel and CO2 consumption by at least 20%, the 43.5 metre long vessels will be delivered next year. The Small Ferries project, as it is known, is a partnership between Caledonian Maritime Assets (CMAL) and Ferguson Shipbuilders of the Port of Glasgow and is part-funded by EU money. Lloyd’s Register has been surveying the building work, ensuring compliance with plan approval and LR rule requirements.

Hybrid Ferries Will Use Voith Schneider Propellers

In summer, 2013, the world's first two ferries with a hybrid propulsion system will be put into service. Owned by CMAL, they are being built by Ferguson Shipbuilders in Glasgow. Each of the hybrid vessels will be equipped with two Voith Schneider Propellers (VSP) with an input power of 375 kW per propeller. With its hybrid concept, the shipyard aims to reduce the ferry's CO2 emissions by up to 20 percent. The vessels will be the first of their kind to combine a diesel-electric propulsion system with lithium ion battery technology. The ferries will operate on various routes in the Scottish waters, which are characterized by strong currents and heavy winds.
