The volume of total cargo throughput in the port of Rotterdam was 0.8% higher in the first half of the year (233.5 million tonnes) than in the same period in 2021 (231.6 million tonnes). In many segments, the war in Ukraine led to significant changes. For example, imports of both LNG and coal rose very sharply as an alternative to reduced European imports of Russian gas by pipeline. The throughput of crude oil increased, with oil products falling off. Throughput of iron ore, agricultural…

Steven Libert, president of the Great Lakes Exploration Group, announced he has located what is believed to be the remains of Le Griffon, the first European ship to have sailed the upper Great Lakes. The 45-ton barque carrying seven cannons was built by the legendary French explorer Rene-Robert Cavalier, Sieur de La Salle who was attempting to establish a Northwest Passage through Canada. La Salle wanted to provide a faster way to connect France with its trading partners in the Far East and Le Griffon was to be a vital link in the route between Niagra and Illinois.

Munson Delivers 36’ Packcat to Sky Research

Beneath choppy Puget Sound waters linger remnants of war that could potentially harm both life and this robust sea-faring industry. During a routine security dive, Port of Seattle divers discovered munitions that date back to World War II. Munitions were found on six more occasions, the last of which was considered hazardous. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers authorized a time critical removal action to deal with munitions found where cruise ships berthed on Pier 91. Diving Companies Track Pipes and Cables

WJ Castle PE & Associates Castle was recently subcontracted by Brayman Construction to perform an inspection and document the underwater conditions at a utility’s proposed site for a diffuser pipe extension. Using JW Fishers CT-1 cable tracker and PT-1 pipe tracker, Castle’s team of divers searched for a high voltage power cable and pipeline running through the area. Complicating the job was the excessive amount of debris littering the site, including steel plates, beams, and wire rope. Also close by were a seawall, constructed of steel-reinforced concrete and steel plates. Very high concentrations of ferrous metal in the area prevented the use a standard magnetometer, as it would be impossible to locate individual pieces.

Thermo Andersen Gets Approval

Thermo Andersen announces that the EPA has approved the M9096 sampler for use in any instance where Method 17 is required. The portable M9096 Stack Train provides an accurate means to collect a sample for particulate emissions at an affordable price. The sampler collects particulate matter from source point emissions such as boilers and process stacks by using an in stack filter as sample media; analysis is gravimetric. The sampler allows for isokinetic sampling rates as prescribed by ISO 9096, BS6069 and US EPA Test Method 17. Applications include Particulate CEM Calibration, utility, pulp and paper, ferric and non-ferrous metal production, wood products, and chemical production. The system can now be used to determine compliance with any Federal, State or local air permit.
