Coast Guard responds to deadly New York harbor pilot accident.On December 30, 2019 at approximately 0430, Sandy Hook Pilot Captain Dennis R. Sherwood was involved in an incident while boarding a container vessel inbound to the Port of New York & New Jersey. He sustained injuries after falling from an accommodation ladder and was evacuated to a local hospital where his injuries proved to be fatal. Prior to the incident, Captain Sherwood had been piloting vessels in and out of the Port of New York & New Jersey for over 35 years.The incident is being investigated by the United States Coast Guard.

A marine power generation and climate control products manufacturer Northern Lights, Inc. (NLI) has  announced  completion of a 235kW Commercial Series generator set for the Fire Department of New York. The unit – M235C13.11NYFD – was built with a number of specifications unique to the requirements of metropolitan fire-fighting, including a nonstandard base pan, shutdown switches and USCG fuel lines plumbed to the base frame. The unit was completed to ABS and USCG standards and included a special “fire engine” red paint scheme.

U.S. Navy ships and U.S. Coast Guard cutters, Station New York and Maritime Safety and Security Team New York, along with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York Police Harbor units and Fire Department of New York’s fireboat participated in the 2014 Fleet Week New York Parade of Ships, which took place in New York Harbor, today. Participating military ships included the Harpers Ferry-class dock landing ship USS Oak Hill (LSD 51), Arleigh Burke-class destroyers USS Cole (DDG 67 and USS McFaul (DDG 74), and U.S. Coast Guard cutters Campbell (WMEC 909), Katherine Walker (WLM 552), Thunder Bay (WTGB 108), and Sailfish (WPB 87356). Fleet Week New York, now in its 26th year, is the city’s time-honored celebration of the sea services.

On September 17, McAllister Towing and Reinauer Transportation will be partnering with the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound and Sector New York in a major simulated marine accident and pollution incident on the waters of Long Island Sound. Responders will be faced with a simulated grounding and subsequent oil spill impacting the waters and shoreline of Connecticut and New York. The exercise is part of the National Preparedness for Response Exercise Program (PREP), a voluntary program bringing together industry and government to meet the exercise and preparedness requirements of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, legislation enacted following the Exxon Valdez.

The Coast Guard continues to investigate a probable hoax distress call that was received June 11, 2012, alleging a yacht explosion off Sandy Hook, N.J. Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service New York received the distress call at approximately 4:20 p.m., reportedly from the master of the yacht Blind Date, stating the vessel suffered an explosion with 21 people aboard. A massive, multi-agency search took place 17 nautical miles east of Sandy Hook, and involved two Coast Guard boat crews, four Coast Guard aircraft crews, response units from New York City Police Department, Fire Department of New York City, New Jersey State Police, and Nassau County Police Department. Good Samaritan boats also participated in the 5 1/2-hour, 638-square nautical mile search.

Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service New York received an apparent distress call Monday, reportedly from the yacht Blind Date, stating the vessel suffered an explosion, seven people were injured and all 21 people aboard the yacht had abandoned ship into liferafts. A later call to the Coast Guard reported that three people aboard the boat had died, and that several people had 2nd and 3rd-degree burns, and that people aboard were abandoning ship into liferafts. Coast Guard search east of Sandy Hook included two Coast Guard boat crews and four Coast Guard helicopter crews, who searched approximately 638 square nautical miles. Moose Boats Announces Fire Boat Contract Award from West Pierce Fire and Rescue. Moose Boats, a boat designer and manufacturer in the San Francisco Bay Area, has been awarded a new contract from West Pierce Fire and Rescue in University Place, WA for the construction of a M2-37 Catamaran Fire Rescue Boat. The M2-37 is a 37’-0” aluminum catamaran powered by newly introduced twin Cummins 6.7ltr 425hp turbo diesels and is propelled by Hamilton 292 water jets. The vessel will provide West Pierce Fire and Rescue with fire fighting, rescue, dive and shore landing capabilities.

Moose Boats Awarded New Contract for City of New Orleans CBRNE Fire Rescue Vessel. Moose Boats, a boat designer and manufacturer in the San Francisco Bay Area, has been awarded a new contract from the New Orleans Fire Department for the construction of a M3-36 Monohull CBRNE Fire Rescue Boat. The M3 is a new product line for Moose Boats and incorporates the builder’s established design and quality reputation in a more compact platform than the M1 and M2 Catamaran Vessels. The M3-36 is a 36’-6” aluminum monohull powered by twin Yamaha 350hp four stroke outboard engines.

In July 2005, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) awarded a contract for the design of their new fast response fireboats to Robert Allan Ltd. of Vancouver, BC. The design team has been working closely with the FDNY project team finalizing the functional requirements for the vessel, assessing alternatives, and developing the concept design. In March 2006, the project successfully completed a comprehensive value engineering process, during which a panel of independent marine and fire-fighting industry experts reviewed the proposed design and, in concert with the Robert Allan Ltd. and FDNY design teams, assessed the merits of a variety of suggested options.

Robert Allan Ltd. won a contract by the Fire Department of New York for the design and construction administration of a new fireboat. The new vessel will replace the aging Fire Fighter. The contract for design and construction administration was bid internationally and awarded to Robert Allan Ltd. The new vessel will be approximately 130 ft. long, have a service speed of 17.5 knots, and a total pumping capacity of 36,000 gpm. The vessel is expected to be put to tender at shipyards late in the second quarter of 2006.

Long considered relics from days gone by, the Fire Department of New York Fireboats have played in an important role in supplying the fire fighting water to battle the blazes at the World Trade Center for the first 36 hours. The fireboats acting as floating pumping stations are manned by NYFD engineering members from the nation's oldest maritime union, the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association District 1. These firefighters are said to have been on a 24 hour on and 24 hour off schedule while supplying their NYFD brothers with much needed water from the Hudson River. It is said that those MEBA members and firemen were also involved in the search and rescue while off duty.

Just after 10 o'clock on a Tuesday morning in July the call came that a car had rolled off Randall's Island into the East River. Chief Bill Siegel, at his desk at Marine Division Headquarters in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, paused for just an instant then jumped up, grabbed a life jacket and headed for the stairs. Other firefighters were already on their way to the pier where the Kevin C. Kane, was tied up waiting to go. Within four minutes the 52-ft. boat was underway with its five-person crew racing upriver toward the sinking car. The men moved swiftly, yet calmly to set the stern deck pipe to pump water in an effort to gain an extra knot or two of speed. Seventy years ago, fireboats ruled New York Harbor.
