A missing retaining ring and mounting bracket on the port main diesel engine led to an engine-room fire on a towing vessel near Belleview, Ky., the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said.Florida Marine Transporters' (FMT) towing vessel Capt. Kirby Dupuis was pushing loaded dry cargo barges on the Ohio River when a fire broke out on its portside engine on November 9, 2021. The crewmembers fought the fire using portable extinguishers and attempted to activate the vessel’s fixed fire-extinguishing system. The fire was eventually extinguished by local firefighters.

A leading maritime company has launched a push to prevent hundreds of dangerous, unseaworthy ships from being detained at Australian ports. Australian Reef Pilots (ARP) has started providing ship safety audits at overseas ports to assess whether foreign ships bound for Australia are up to standard. ARP General Manager Alan Maffina said the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) aimed to randomly inspect about 80% of vessels calling at Australian ports and would not hesitate to delay any that were not up to scratch. “195 foreign ships were detained in the year to May,” Maffina said. “Most were held for a few days but several were tied up for more than a week and one was kept idle for 47 days while its faults were fixed.

Beware of counterfeit U.S. Coast Guard-approved portable fire extinguishers. The U.S. Coast Guard announced that it was made aware of counterfeit extinguishers said to be manufactured by Amerex Corporation and Buckeye Fish Equipment. “Both companies are major producers of genuine approved fire extinguishing equipment,” the U.S. Coast Guard said in a marine safety alert issued in March 2013. “Counterfeit portable fire extinguishers pose a safety hazard for any vessel that has one on board,” said Chesapeake Marine Training Institute’s President and Founder, Capt. Guy Sorensen.

According to CEO Henrik Uhd Christensen, the company’s results are due to Viking’s investments in long term growth, which are proving their worth in a worldwide market that has virtually stagnated during 2012.

Viking Life-Saving Equipment and E.R. Schiffahrt have teamed up to design a fully customized, global servicing arrangement based on Viking’s Shipowner Agreements. The contract covers liferafts, lifeboats, immersion suits, lifejackets and marine fire systems and equipment such as fire extinguishers on more than 30 vessels of the shipowner’s fleet. The plan is for Viking to manage not just service notifications, but also the coordination of all servicing. The survey of 26 ferries by European motoring organizations gave the lowest rating to P&O European Ferries' "Pride of Rathlin," which sails from Cairnryan in Scotland to Larne in Northern Ireland. P&O Portsmouth's "Pride of Hampshire," which connects Portsmouth and Cherbourg, and SeaFrance's "SeaFrance Monet," which sails from Dover to Calais, were also judged to have "poor" safety standards. The "Oglasa" ferry, which connects Piombino and Portoferraio in Italy and is operated by Toremar, a subsidiary of Italian state-owned Tirrenia di Navigazione, was the fourth boat to be given a "poor" rating by the survey.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office Department of Fire Resucue and Emergency Service in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. has accepted delivery of Marine 6, its new FireStorm 40 Fire/Rescue boat. MetalCraft Marine of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, designed this new generation fireboat with a top speed of 42 mph, a pumping capacity of 2,874 gpm and the ability to stop in just over one boat length by using its twin diesel-powered water jets. It provides Broward County, Fla., with offshore first response capabilities, as well as covering the county's intra coastal and Port Everglades oil terminal. Two casino cruises from Port Canaveral were temporarily shut down by the Coast Guard, reports said. Inspectors said they found 24 violations during a routine check of the Sun Cruz Casino. The problems found involved fire equipment on the ship and the cooling system, WESH 2 News reported. The other ship in trouble is Sterling's Ambassador 2. The Coast Guard ordered it out of U.S. waters because it didn't have the proper paperwork, so all bets are off for gamblers until the problems are fixed.
