Kalmar's AutoStrad delivered to Patrick's Port Botany

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, played a successful role in delivering an automated straddle carrier solution to Patrick Stevedores' during their recent automation of Port Botany container terminal in Sydney, Australia. The conversion from manual operations at Port Botany was made in only four days, setting a benchmark for the whole container terminal industry. Patrick's Port Botany is now the world's second fully-automated AutoStrad(TM) terminal, operating with 45 Kalmar AutoStrads and real time control systems. It follows the automation success of Patrick's Fisherman Island terminal in Brisbane, which was converted to an automated straddle carrier operation in 2005.

Shippers Prosecuted for Garbage Dumping

Two shipping companies and their masters have been prosecuted by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) for two separate marine pollution incidents within the Great Barrier Reef. Tokyo based Perses Maritima Ltd and the master of its Japan registered vehicle carrier Asteria Leader were found guilty on May 18 in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on one charge each of illegally discharging garbage under the Protection of the Sea (Prevention of Pollution from Ships) Act 1983.

AMSA Prosecutes Shipping Cos, Masters for Pollution

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has prosecuted two shipping companies and their masters for two separate marine pollution incidents within the Great Barrier Reef. Tokyo based Perses Maritima Ltd and the master of its Japan registered vehicle carrier Asteria Leader were found guilty on May 18 in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on one charge each of illegally discharging garbage under the Protection of the Sea (Prevention of Pollution from Ships) Act 1983. A routine Port State Control inspection conducted by an AMSA marine surveyor at Fisherman Island in the Port of Brisbane revealed a record of the discharge of 0.03m3 of food waste within the Great Barrier Reef on October 8, 2014.

Liebherr to Supply Four Cranes to Australia

Liebherr Container Cranes has recently completed the testing of articulated boom cranes in its Killarney facility in Ireland. The complete articulated boom and main beam of one of the cranes for Port Botany was assembled in Liebherr Container Cranes facility on a special test bed, where it was tested. This articulated boom design allows these large cranes to operate within the height restrictions prevailing at Port Botany, due to its close proximity to Sydney airport, Liebherr said.

Patrick Stevedores Goes All the Way

Based on the results achieved at the autostrad operation at Patrick’s Fisherman Island berth 7 in Brisbane, Australia, Patrick has now placed an order for 14 Kalmar ESC straddle carriers that will be equipped for unmanned operations. The machines will be delivered to three new berths currently under construction at the company’s Fisherman Islands facility in the Port of Brisbane. The expansion of autostrad operations demonstrates Patrick’s trust in the autostrad concept during 12 months of genuine commercial operation with five retro-fitted Kalmar CSC straddle carriers. “The first year of commercial operations with the unmanned straddles has been extremely good.
