Canadian Navy Awards ELMS2 Contract to BMT
BMT Group (previously British Maritime Technology) announced that it has been awarded the Engineering, Logistics, and Management Support 2 (ELMS2) contract by the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND).According to the provider of focused solutions to projects in the energy, ports, mining, defense and transport fields, the services will directly support the Director General Maritime Equipment Program Management (DGMEPM) and the Director General Major Project Delivery (DGMPD) (Sea).Under this contract, BMT will continue to provide risk, due diligence and engineering services for Capital and National Procurement (NP) programs on an âas-and-whenâ requested basis to support Canadaâs naval fleet requirements for the next fifteen years.Darcy ByrtusâŚ
Irving Shipbuilding Embarks on AOPS Design Stage
Canadian Government ministers attend the shipyard to mark start of work on the design of new Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships (AOCS). Irving Shipbuilding welcomed the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada, and the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence to Halifax Shipyard today to mark the start of the Definition (Design) phase of work for the first set of new naval combat vessels for Canada, the Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS).
Irving Progresses AOPS Design, Prepares 2015 Construction
Irving Shipbuilding welcomed Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada, and Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defense, to Halifax Shipyard to mark the start of the Definition (Design) phase of work for the first set of new naval combat vessels for Canada, the Arctic Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS). Under the Definition Contract Irving Shipbuilding will refine and complete the AOPS vessel design to the high degree of detail for Canada and for those who will cut steel, assemble, complete and test the ships, as well as complete various phases of design review, analysis and testing, plan how to integrate all of the complex systems and equipment on the ship and do detailed cost estimates for the build phase of the projectâŚ
Contract Over Victorian Submarines
According to www.nwemail.co.uk, BAE was allied to a Nova Scotia based company, Irving Shipbuilding, and others in a consortium which fought for the contract to maintain four Victoria class submarines during their lifetime. The subs were originally designed in Barrow and one of them was built in the yard. A year ago the big Canadian maintenance contract was set to go to a West Coast, British Columbia-based consortium, after a bidding competition. But now the challenge has resulted in the original decision to award the contract to the Canadian Submarine Management Group, based in British Columbia, being confirmed. It was thought the contract might be re-tenderedâŚ
Specialties Cornerstone of Canadian Market
The past decade was a tough one for the Canadian shipbuilding market. It was a decade that produced a decline of both employment and decline of newbuilds, many of which were contracted in the late 1980s still awaiting construction. This unfinished business was concentrated mostly on various military projects that had been thought out but were never actually followed through. It is estimated that by the time the 1990's came to a close that Canadian yards had experienced the worst decade since postwar times with total sales declining by about 50 percent since 1991. In addition, total employment in the industry has broken off by about 50 percent from 12,000 workers in 1990 to today's figure of 5,000.
