Bremerton, Wash. based boatbuilder SAFE Boats International announced that retired Vice Admiral William âDeanâ Lee and Tom Norton have joined its board of directors.Vice Admiral Lee served in the U. S. Coast Guard for more than 36-years, most recently serving as the Commander, Atlantic Area (LANTAREA), responsible for all Coast Guard operations from the Rocky Mountains to the Arabian Gulf. During his service to the Nation, he served in numerous command and staff positions specializing in search and rescue and small boat operations.
Teledyne Acquires FLIR
Industrial conglomerate Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY) said it has completed its acquisition of thermal imaging cameras and sensors company FLIR Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:FLIR). FLIR will now be included in Teledyneâs Digital Imaging segment and operate under the name Teledyne FLIR.Under the terms of the cash-and-stock deal announced in January, FLIR stockholders received $28.00 per share in cash and 0.0718 shares of Teledyne common stock for each FLIR share, which implies a total purchase price of approximately $57.40 per FLIR share based on Teledyneâs closing price on May 13.

Pirates Beware â US Navy to Test Robotic Drones
Navy unmanned aircraft will be able to distinguish small pirate boats from other vessels when an Office of Naval Research (ONR)-funded sensor starts airborne tests this summer, officials said. Wood Jr. Appointed Chairman at American Superconductor

New Navy Contracts
EnerSys Energy Products, Inc., Warrensburg, Mo., is being awarded a $17,816,784 firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for the design and construction of submarine valve regulated lead acid class batteries and associated parts and engineering support. This contract is for the procurement of replacement back-up batteries for in-service nuclear submarines. Work will be performed in Warrensburg, Mo., and is expected to be completed by October 2012. Contract funds in the amount of $12,100 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was competitively procured via the Federal Business Opportunities website, with one offer received. The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane, Ind., is the contracting activity (N00164-10-D-GS60).

FLIR Systems, Inc., North Billerica, Mass., is being awarded an $8,624,000 firm-fixed-price contract for non-warranty repairs and spares for the maritime forward looking infrared radar (MARFLIR); high-power microscopic field (HPMF); and MicroStar systems. The MARFLIR, HPMF, and MicroStar systems are to provide maritime crafts, ground vehicles, and unmanned aircraft with all-weather, day/night, high-resolution, stabilized, forward-looking infrared thermal imaging capability to augment existing optical and radar sensors by imaging enemy forces on land, at-sea and in the air, particularly during periods of darkness and poor visibility. These systems enhance the detection, recognition, identification and tracking targets.
