US-based Sparton Corporation and Ultra Electronics - USSI, a subsidiary of Ultra Electronics Holdings plc (ULE) announce the award of subcontracts valued at $10.8 million to their ERAPSCO joint venture, for the manufacture of sonobuoys for the United States Navy. The Q53F and Q125 sonobuoys are used to support the United States Naval Antisubmarine Forces. The primary purpose of a sonobuoy is to detect acoustic emissions or reflections from potentially hostile submarines and transmit these signals to US Navy airborne antisubmarine warfare forces. Lockheed Martin Awarded $35.8m Navy Contract
Lockheed Martin has been awarded a $35.8m contract by the U.S. Navy to design and produce antenna buoy systems that will expand the communications capabilities of submarines while they are submerged. The Navy's Communications at Speed and Depth (CSD) program will use expendable submarine and air-launched communications buoys to enable submarines operating below periscope depth and at tactical speeds to communicate with surface ships and land-based assets via satellite networks. Crowley Ships Unique Equipment for Smithsonian
Crowley Liner Services is in the process of transporting one 20-ft. flatbed and one 20-ft. unique satellite equipment from Houston, Texas to Panama as part of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute's Jason Project, a research and learning series on rainforests. The cargo departed Houston by ship on Jan. 2 and is expected to arrive in Panama January 9. Crowley was chosen for the job by Total Export of Florida Inc. and Leblanc Enterprises, Ltd. The satellite, which is the only one like it in the world, required careful handling by Crowley and was secured onto the vessel for transport with hooks and wires. Port Approves New Terminal Operator
The Tampa Port Authority on May 16 approved P&O Ports Florida Inc.'s application for a license to perform local terminal and stevedore operations by a 6-0 vote. A national uproar erupted over the prospects of a Middle Eastern company controlling certain U.S. terminal operations. That led to Dubai Ports agreeing to sell its U.S. business to an American owner. A deal is in the works, but in the meantime P&O Florida functions independent of its owner, TMCnet reported. The port continued to review details of a bill the Florida Legislature approved that would revise state guidelines for seaport security. Gov. Jeb Bush is expected to sign the bill into law.
