Florida Governor Rick Scott is expected to sign bipartisan, community-supported legislation that enacts major changes to the Port Authority Charter for the first time in Port Canaveral’s 60-year history. As a Special District created by the Florida Legislature, the Canaveral Port Authority occasionally has sought legislative approval for specific charter amendments. Port Everglades to Receive $16.5M in State Funds
The Florida Seaport Transportation and Economic Development (FSTED) Council approved $16.5 million in allocations to Port Everglades to lengthen a cruise berth and to extend the port’s Southport Turning Notch to allow for more cargo berths. These allocations, which were approved under two different state funding sources, will become part of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) 2014/15 Work Program that comes before the Florida Legislature for approval this next legislative session.
TSA, Florida Team To Tighten Seaport Security
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Florida state House and Senate leaders, and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles announced a partnership designedto strengthen security at the State's seaports. The partnership, formalized in a Memorandum of Agreement signed in mid-February, will define requirements for background checks and state-of-the-art identification credentials for truck drivers, dockworkers and others who require unescorted access to the secure areas of the seaports. TSA will provide the infrastructure of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), which offers a giant leap in transportation security by balancing the needs of commerce and individual privacy with those of security.
Moyer to Assist Severn Trent Management Services
Severn Trent Services has announced that Gary Moyer will work with Severn Trent Management Services in a full-time consulting capacity. In this role, Moyer will assist in reacquiring districts formerly managed by Severn Trent by leveraging relationships established over his three decades in the Florida community development district (CDD) market. In addition, he will share his extensive management experience with Severn Trent’s district managers who currently serve more than 100 district clients throughout Florida. Moyer assumed his role effective June 1 and works from Severn Trent’s Celebration, Fla. office. Port Approves New Terminal Operator
The Tampa Port Authority on May 16 approved P&O Ports Florida Inc.'s application for a license to perform local terminal and stevedore operations by a 6-0 vote. A national uproar erupted over the prospects of a Middle Eastern company controlling certain U.S. terminal operations. That led to Dubai Ports agreeing to sell its U.S. business to an American owner. A deal is in the works, but in the meantime P&O Florida functions independent of its owner, TMCnet reported. The port continued to review details of a bill the Florida Legislature approved that would revise state guidelines for seaport security. Gov. Jeb Bush is expected to sign the bill into law.
