The Coast Guard and a good Samaritan commercial fishing crew rescued five people from the water after the fishing vessel Star King, a 55-foot stern trawler homeported in Astoria, capsized and sank near the entrance to the Columbia River early Saturday morning. All five fishermen were pulled from the water by the crew of the fishing vessel Sea Ballad and were transferred to the Coast Guard 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew, from Station Cape Disappointment, who transported them to the station in Ilwaco, Wash., where they did not need medical attention. The Coast Guard rescued one mariner aboard a disabled vessel after he become disoriented in Bellingham Bay, Saturday. Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound command center received a report from Station Bellingham of the disabled and adrift 27-foot crab in the shoals of Bellingham Bay with one person aboard at 3:05 p.m. The mariner was unable to give his exact position but was quickly located after Sector personnel tracked his location using his cell phone GPS signal. A Coast Guard Station Bellingham rescue boat crew aboard a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium responded to the incident and safely removed the mariner from his vessel at 4:13 p.m. The mariner was reported to be in good condition and did not seek medical attention.

The Coast Guard rescued three fishermen from a liferaft 8 miles west of Cape Blanco at 1:15 p.m., Sunday. The three fishermen, reportedly uninjured, are aboard a Coast Guard 47-foot Motor Lifeboat en route to Station Coos Bay, located in Charleston, after abandoning their fishing vessel when it started taking on water. Coast Guard watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Bend received a mayday call from the fishing vessel McCalis, homeported in Charleston, over VHF-FM radio channel 16 at 11:54 a.m. The fishing crew reported their fishing vessel was taking on water through the fish hold and the dewatering pumps were not keeping up. The crew also announced their intention to abandon ship.

The Coast Guard rescued six people in three separate search-and-rescue cases Saturday along the Washington and Oregon coastline. On Saturday morning, the Coast Guard rescued three people near Coos Bay, Oregon when their boat overturned. On Saturday evening, two kayakers were stranded between Hope Island and Whidbey Island, Washington when their kayaks capsized and required assistance. Additionally, a 58-year-old man was retrieved from the water after falling from D dock at the Port of Ilwaco, Washington. At approximately 5 p.m., Saturday, a watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound received a report from 911 dispatch of a male and female kayaker who capsized on the northeast side of Whidbey Island between Whidbey and Hope Islands.

A rescue crew from U.S. Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook, New Jersey saved four people after their 20-foot pleasure craft capsized near the Shrewsbury River Entrance, off of Sea Bright, New Jersey, Sunday. At approximately 3:30 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook received a distress call from a boat operator, via cell phone, stating his pleasure craft was taking on water and requested assistance near the Shrewsbury River Entrance. The rescue crew from Station Sandy Hook immediately launched aboard their 47-foot motor lifeboat and arrived on scene at 3:50 p.m., as the pleasure craft capsized, causing the four people to enter the water. The four people, wearing life jackets were rescued out of the water and transferred to awaiting EMS at Station Sandy Hook.

Coast Guard members and local agencies responded to a fishing vessel taking on water with two people aboard west of Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay Wednesday afternoon. At 1:28 p.m., Coast Guard Station Golden Gate watchstanders received a VHF-FM radio transmission on channel 16 from a person aboard a 49-foot fishing vessel taking on water. Two rescue boatcrews were launched from Station Golden Gate, and marine units were dispatched from San Francisco Fire, Tiburon Fire and Richmond Fire departments. Personnel from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers vessel, Racoon, also responded. “The rapid response by multiple agencies ensured help was on scene within minutes,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew Whitlow, boatswain’s mate at Station Golden Gate.

The Coast Guard, state and local agencies responded to a report of a missing duck hunter in the vicinity of South Pass on the lower Mississippi River, Thursday. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report of the missing hunter and directed the launch of a Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew, and a Coast Guard Station Venice rescue boat crew at 9:17 p.m., Wednesday. First responders searched throughout the evening and into the morning. Plaquemine's Parish Marine Division and Lousiana Wildlife and Fisheries joined the search this morning. Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries located the hunter at 10 a.m. on the western side of South Pass.

An engine room fire last week aboard a 485-foot, Bahamian-flagged chemical tanker has left the vessel disabled without propulsions about 700 miles west of Cape Blanco, Oregon, killing one crew member, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) reported. According to the USCG, the fire was extinguished using installed firefighting systems, however, the ship sustained damage to its generators, leaving the crew with minimal battery power. USCG air and cutter forces were called in to assist the tanker’s 22-person crew.

The Coast Guard rescued five people from a boat following an engine fire near the Indian River Inlet Bridge Sunday. A person aboard the 36-foot Sport Fisher, Outcast, used a VHF-FM radio to call watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay in Philadelphia at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday. The man reported an engine fire disabled the boat and they were in need of assistance. A 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew from Coast Guard Station Indian River arrived on scene, transferred the five people aboard the MLB and transported the people back to shore with no reported injuries. “The boaters said they were coming up to speed to go fishing and the engine started to make a strange noise,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Bryan Thurman.

U.S. Coast Guard air and boatcrews assisted three men after a 55-foot commercial fishing vessel allided with a jetty near Newport, Ore., Monday evening. The crew of the fishing vessel Eclipse contacted the Coast Guard via VHF-FM radio at 8:15 p.m., reporting that they had lost propulsion and had struck the jetty and began taking on water. Two crewmembers were able to make their way onto the jetty, and one man was helped safely to shore by a shore party from Station Yaquina Bay, in Newport and waiting emergency medical services. The second crewmember, reportedly exhibiting signs of mild hypothermia, was safely hoisted by a Coast Guard aircrew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Facility Newport. He was transported to AirFac Newport and transferred to waiting EMS.

A U.S. Coast Guardreported that its boatcrew from Station Chetco River, in Brookings, Ore., rescued four people after a 62-foot fishing vessel allided with the Chetco River South Jetty, Monday evening. The crew of the fishing vessel Jo Marie contacted the Coast Guard via VHF-FM radio at 8:16 p.m. Crewmembers from Station Chetco River launched aboard a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat and watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Bend, Ore., directed the launch of an aircrew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station North Bend. The MLB boatcrew was able to safely rescue all four people and transferred them to emergency medical services at Station Chetco River. There were no reports of major injuries.

The U.S. Coast Guard towed a disabled catamaran with one person aboard Tuesday after the boat lost steering approximately six miles offshore from Cape May Inlet. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Cape May received a mayday call from the captain of the 44-foot Empire State reporting the boat lost steering, and the man needed assistance. A 45-foot Response Boat ─ Medium crew from the station responded, and once on scene, took Empire State into a 300-foot stern tow. While in tow, the boat’s operator and a station crewmember manually steered the boat through six- to eight-foot waves.

The Coast Guard Captain of the Port of St. Louis has restricted traffic on the Mississippi River in response to high water, Monday. The upper Mississippi River is closed to all traffic from mile marker 179 to mile marker 184 near the St. Louis Harbor. Fleet vessels are permitted to operate in the zone to ensure the safety and integrity of their fleets. The Coast Guard encourages mariners to ensure that moored vessels and barges are adequately secured with the anticipation of increased current and high water. Debris may be an increased hazard to navigation and may drag buoys off station. The USCG advises that mariners exercise caution when dislodging debris from fleeting areas and communicate the same to downstream fleets.

U.S. Coast Guard personnel are on scene and monitoring the grounding of the 100-foot tug Commodore Straits, which ran aground while pushing two barges in the St. Lawrence Seaway near Keewaydin State Park in Alexandria Bay, N.Y., at about 5:30 a.m. Oct. 24. Although both barges are taking on water, no pollution or injuries have been reported, and the area has been determined safe for maritime traffic to pass at reduced speeds. After the Coast Guard was notified, a 25-ft Response Boat-Small and crew from Station Alexandria Bay, N.Y., immediately dispatched to monitor the situation.

Lift boats are the unglamorous vessels of oil and gas well servicing industry. They travel to the job site with three large cylindrical legs rising 150-250 ft. above the waterline. Once onsite, lift boats lower their legs to the seabed and raise their hull up to 100 ft. above the waterline to be even with the structure they are servicing to provide a stable platform for workers to transit from the lift boat to the project in which they are working. These versatile vessels can serve through the entire life of a oil or gas well from driving casing to provide a "path" for a jackup rig to drill through construction of the platform, repair and renovation of the platform to plug and abandonment of the well.

Coast Guard marine safety personnel are investigating a reported diesel fuel spill at mile marker 158 in the Lower Mississippi River, near St. James, La. Crewmembers of the tug Tom Jump, of St. Louis, Mo., were reportedly transferring fuel between compartments when approximately 950 gallons spilled into the water. Boom, which is a floating device used to contain oil, was deployed to control the spread of the product. There were no injuries reported. A broadcast will be issued on VHF-FM radio channel 16 to alert mariners of the spill. A helicopter crew from Air Station New Orleans is en route to provide an aerial survey of the spill site. Personnel from Marine Safety Office New Orleans will be investigating the incident.

Wednesday the fire alarm in the Electronics Support Detachment Valdez building was triggered indicating a potential fire in the electronics room. The Valdez Fire Department immediately responded to the alarm, cleared the space of any potential danger, and stated the smoke appeared to be due to an electrical short in one of the equipment racks. Coast Guard VHF-FM radio circuits and Vessel Traffic Service remote sensor systems remained operational following the short; however, the Vessel Traffic Center’s visual tracking display was temporarily disabled. Early morning Thursday technicians successfully restored the display and Vessel Traffic Service Prince William Sound was returned to normal operations.
