Aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, Arleigh Burke -class guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) announced today that it will donate $500,000 to the American Red Cross and the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank to support local flooding disaster relief assistance in Louisiana. “Our thoughts and prayers are with our friends and neighbors in Louisiana who have been impacted by storms and severe flooding in the region," said Rex W. Tillerson, chairman and chief executive officer of Exxon Mobil Corporation. ExxonMobil employs more than 5,500 employees and contractors in the Baton Rouge area where it has operated for more than 100 years. Baton Rouge employees spend more than 40,000 hours volunteering in the community each year supporting 168 local organizations. Annually, the company donates about $5 million to agencies and schools in the Baton Rouge area.

Today SC Ports Authority reported 2015 fiscal year-end operating earnings of $30.4 million and revenues of $196.8 million, significant increases over the previous year's financial performance. Among the well-wishers who welcomed Jeremiah and Crystal Lamberty and their children to their new home were Rep. Bobby Scott; State Sen. John Miller; Cathy McQuade, president-elect, Habitat for Humanity board of directors; Karen Joyner, CEO, Virginia Peninsula Food Bank; and Michael Lee, vice president, United Steelworkers Local 8888. Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced that its Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division lent support to the community by participating in three area charitable events. Shipbuilders donated nearly 20,000 school supplies to benefit an estimated 1,000 area students, contributed $2 million to the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula, and recently delivered more than 20 metric tons of non-perishable food--five tons heavier than an anchor on the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Crowley Maritime Corp donates check & personnel will help in field enhancements to benefit more than 500 local children and adults. Children attending YMCA summer camps and playing on sports teams in the Arlington area will soon benefit from Fort Caroline field enhancements following a recent donation from Jacksonville-based Crowley Maritime Corp . A check will be presented by Crowley’s David Holden, director, human resources, to the YMCA during a ceremony scheduled for Sat., Jan. 12, at 10:00 a.m. on the field. Shortly thereafter, Crowley employees and other community volunteers will work together to lay new grass seed, install fencing, add an irrigation system and perform other tasks to improve the field’s safety and function.

Newport News Shipbuilding employees donate food for the poor at Christmas, filling offices from desk to door. Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division donated more than $23,500 and more than 31,000 pounds of non-perishable food to the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank during the shipyard's annual holiday food drive. Cruise ship 'Carnival Breeze' hoists 50' inflatable turkey aloft while Carnival Cruise Line donate 137,500 meals to 'Feeding South Florida'. The 1,250-pound nylon turkey — wearing a straw beach hat and colorful Hawaiian shirt – was hoisted aboard the ship in Miami in time for Thanksgiving Day holiday fesivities. The giant fowl will sit 14 stories above the waterline and gaze toward nearby McArthur Causeway until just before the ship makes its inaugural sailing from Miami on Thanksgiving Day.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, NY, was particularly close to the shooting this weekend of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, as her husband is U.S. Navy Captain Mark E. Kelly, a NASA Astronaut born in West Orange, NJ, and a 1986 graduate of USMMA with a bachelor of science degrees in marine engineering and marine transportation (with highest honors). Rep. Giffords was shot on Saturday, Jan. 8 at a supermarket in northwest Tucson, Arizona. According to a report in New York Newsday, it was on the campus in 2006 that Kelly proposed to Giffords.
