Spain's Ports See Goods Traffic Rise as Red Sea Crisis Continues

The volume of goods moving through Spain's top ports rose by as much as 25% in January as attacks on shipping in the Red Sea caused companies to divert Europe-bound vessels around southern Africa instead.Spain's northern ports have also seen volumes in transit jump by up to triple as traders opt to avoid moving goods by truck through Europe because of widespread blockades by farmers, Spanish retail and food industry association Aecoc says.Ports such as Las Palmas in the Canary Islands and Barcelona saw a 25.4% and 7.6% increase in the volume of merchandise respectively…

Partners to Develop Offshore Wind to Ammonia Project in Greenland

Norway-based H2Carrier announced it has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Greenland-based Anori to develop the first commercial wind farm in Greenland with subsequent production and export of green ammonia.The wind farm is projected to comprise 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy which will supply power to H2Carrier’s floating production vessel for hydrogen and green ammonia. ABS, DSME to Develop Very Large Liquefied CO2 Carrier

MOL Moves Into CO2 Shipping with Investment in Larvik Shipping

Japan's Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) said it will make its first foray into the liquefied CO2 ocean transport business through an investment in Larvik Shipping AS, a Norwegian ship management company for liquefied CO2 carriers.Liquefied CO2 ocean transport plays a key role in carbon dioxide capture utilization and storage (CCUS) value chains as a means of effectively connecting collection sites with storage or usage sites. CMA CGM, Hamburg Sud Launch Americas Service

French container shipping company CMA CGM announced the launch of its new service between the west coast of the United States, Central America and South America, to be operated in collaboration with the German shipping company Hamburg Sud. Starting May 24, CMA CGM will offer a weekly service with coverage to/from the west coast of the United States, Central America and South America, enabling the agri-food industry in Central and South America to export to North American markets. The service also has the possibility of fast connections with the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Colombia through the hubs of Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico and Buenaventura, Colombia.

Maersk Helps in UN Food Saving Initiative

Maersk Container Industry has joined the United Nations' SAVE FOOD Initiative to help make international food logistics more efficient. "Food should not be wasted, but too often it is, and we believe our technologies can help improve the food logistics chain," says Peter K. Nymand, CEO of Maersk Container Industry, MCI. The UN food organization FAO, under which SAVE FOOD is organised, estimates that globally up to 50 % of fruits and vegetables are lost between farm and fork. Transport and distribution may account for between 5% and 20% of the loss depending on the specific region of the world. Technologies like Star Cool CA and AV+ are used to control a refrigeration container's temperature, humidity, air flow and air composition.

DOE Funds Research on Alternative Biofuels

Tomorrow, the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) kicks off a third summer season of alternative biofuel testing in an effort to further advance marine engine technology and find an alternative to fuel containing more than 10% ethanol as a result of its damaging effects on marine engines. The tests are funded by the Department of Energy which released a 2011 report on engines using E15 revealing performance issues like stalling, corrosion leading to oil or fuel leaks, increased emissions and damaged valves, rubber fuel lines and gaskets. These results reinforced the recreational boating industry’s concern that E15 is not a suitable fuel for boat engines.

Fednav Group Brings New Green Ship to the US Great Lakes

Montreal-based Fednav Group, owner of Federal Marine Terminals, Inc. (FMT), the leading terminal operator at the Port of Cleveland, has delivered three new state-of-the-art vessels to trade on the Great Lakes-Seaway System. The MV Federal Satsuki, arrived at Federal Marine Terminals, Cleveland, this week from Europe, carrying steel for the coal mining, automotive, and cosmetic industries and machinery for the food industry. After unloading its cargo in Cleveland, the vessel will load grain in Toledo for export to Northern Europe. The new ship was welcomed today in a special gift-exchange ceremony between Port of Cleveland officials and Fednav executives, on the occasion of its maiden voyage to the United States.

VIKING continues its march forward in Europe and Asia with four new, well-equipped servicing stations opening in November. Marine and fire safety equipment manufacturer VIKING Life-Saving Equipment has announced it is opening four servicing stations at Brest (France), Split (Croatia), Kaohsiung (Taiwan) and Port Klang (Malaysia). The new ports further expand the company’s already dense network of stations in Europe and Asia. The new facility at Split, on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, is the first VIKING-owned station in Croatia.
