Icelandic fisheries company Samherji though Samherji Holding has acquired a substantial share in Eimskip, Iceland’s longest-established and largest shipping operator.The company has a total of 25.3% stake in the company and the purchase price is about 11 billion Icelandic krona. Samherji Holding is a subsidiary of Samherji's foreign operations. The seller of the stake is the US investment fund Yucaipa.The purchase will give Samherji an investment in a major logistics firm that has 22 vessels, 63 offices in 20 countries in four continents, operates 22 vessels and over 1,850 employees.‘Eimskip is a well-established company with solid foundations, experienced staff and an excellent fleet,’ said Samherji managing director Thorsteinn Már Baldvinsson.

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) hosted Rep. Kay Granger, R-Texas, on February 23 for a tour of the company’s Newport News Shipbuilding division. Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin accompanied the congresswoman on the shipyard tour, which included progress updates on the aircraft carriers Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), as well as the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) refueling complex overhaul and the Enterprise (CVN 65) inactivation. Globe Wireless announced that Thomas M. Black has been appointed CFO of the company. Black owned a successful consulting practice, providing financial and strategic guidance to maritime companies. He was a financial partner in Tatum, LLC, and also held multiple positions with Tropical Shipping, including Senior VP of Foreign Operations and CFO. He also served General Manager of Thompson Shipping and Director of Finance for International Shipping Partners. Black holds a Masters degree in Accounting from the University of Illinois and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Miami.

Tidewater Inc. (NYSE:TDW) announced on March 28 that William C. O'Malley, the company's Chairman, President and CEO for most of the past eight years, has officially stepped down as Tidewater's CEO, handing over the reins of leadership to Dean E. Taylor. Taylor, 53, has served as President of Tidewater since October 2001 when O'Malley, 65, announced his impending retirement at the end of March 2002. Taylor's career with Tidewater started in 1978 where he served as an assistant manager in the company's Morgan City, La. office. With his Navy background and business savvy, Taylor gradually worked his way up through Tidewater's ranks to become an executive vice president in December of 2000.

Petrobras plans to invest $5.2 billion in foreign acquisitions, mainly in the Gulf of Mexico, to meet a 2005 foreign output target of 300,000 barrels per day (bpd), Reuters reported. Jorge Marques de Toledo Camargo, head of Petrobras' foreign operations, also said other purchases would focus on offshore drilling projects in which he said the Brazilian company had a competitive advantage. "We cannot meet this goal (of 300,000 bpd) only with our existing portfolio. We need to accumulate new assets," Camargo said in a recent interview while visiting Colombia. "In South America and Western Africa ... we have built a portfolio as we had planned. The area that would be most challenging for our growth is the Gulf of Mexico, where we are focusing," he said.
