SUNY Maritime President to Retire in 2024

RADM Michael Alfultis announced he will retire in 2024 after nearly a decade as president of SUNY Maritime College and more than 30 years in higher education.When RADM Alfultis was appointed Maritime College president in 2014, he immediately focused on two priorities for the college: the replacement of the training ship Empire State and the formal reconciliation with the Fort Schuyler Maritime Alumni Association. Within three years, a formal SUNY-approved Memorandum of Agreement was signed between Maritime College and the Maritime College Alumni Association.

OSG Pledges $90,000 for Women at SUNY Maritime College

U.S.-based shipping company Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) announced its support for women at SUNY Maritime College with a three-year pledge totaling nearly $90,000, in an effort to make strides in reducing the gender gap in the maritime industry and create equal opportunities for all. The American shipbuilding scene, filled with participants constructing all manner of vessels, has been navigating through stormy times (lately, yards along the Gulf Coast have literally been dealing with storms). The orders for newbuild, repair and conversion projects continue to flow in—albeit at a reduced pace—and the boats and ships go down the ways into the water, but the overall panorama has seen tremendous sea changes as the business has shifted.Maritime businesses worldwide have been grappling with currents both internal and external.

SUNY Maritime mourns the Loss of Professor James McKoy

The word has been passed that long tenured and much loved and respected SUNY Maritime Professor James "Jim" McKoy has passed away after a long illness. I am sad to announce the passing of James “Jim” McKoy, Professor of Marine Transportation, after fighting a long battle against a most devastating disease. He crossed over the bar Monday morning. Mate McKoy will be missed by his colleagues and students across the campus and by the thousands of alumni who had him as an instructor during their time at Fort Schuyler. During his 38 years at Maritime College, Mate McKoy was well respected by his students as a tough but fair instructor, dedicated to his teaching and holding his students to high standards. If you passed his courses, you knew you were ready for the USCG license examination.

SUNY Maritime Plots its Financial Course

On December 21, Rear Admiral Michael Alfultis, president of SUNY Maritime, signed two agreements setting SUNY Maritime College on a new course for success. The College and the Fort Schuyler Maritime Alumni Association are now partners for the benefit of the College, its students and its alumni. On the same day, the SUNY Maritime Foundation was launched publicly to support the College’s strategic initiatives, to expand its reach and to support its goal of developing additional resources.

Vietnamese Boat Refugees, Rescuers Reunited at SUNY Maritime

Five years after the U.S. withdrew from Vietnam, life was unbearable for those who fought beside their American allies. Seven-year-old Lauren Vuong and her family had no choice but to escape. They left under the cover of night, cramming 62 people into a small wooden boat in a life or death gamble. After 10 days of storms, they were lost at sea and nearly out of food, water and fuel. In those waning hours of hope, the American-flagged LNG Virgo spotted and rescued them. For the past 20 years, Vuong has been searching for the crew of the LNG Virgo, the ship that rescued her and 61 others. “We never forgot the compassion that saved our lives. It has always been my parents’ dream to find the captain and crew to thank them.

NAMEPA to Honor Founding Chairman Maitland

The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) announced that Clay Maitland will receive the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award at an awards dinner in New York on October 26. Maitland, who is a Managing Partner of International Registries, Inc (Marshall Islands Ship Registry), is being recognized for his many industry accomplishments including being a NAMEPA co-founder. “Clay is one of the finest examples in our industry of a successful businessman who expends nearly as much energy on philanthropy,” said NAMEPA Chairman Joe Hughes. Maitland has worked in the shipping industry since graduation from law school in 1968. He was employed by International Registries, Inc.

The State University of New York Maritime College will confer the honorary degree of doctor of science degree on Morton S. Bouchard III, the president and CEO of Bouchard Transportation Company, Inc., during winter 2016 commencement exercises Friday, January 29. Mort Bouchard is his family's fourth generation to manage Bouchard Transportation Company, Inc., the largest privately owned ocean-going petroleum barge company in the United States. Baltimore-headquartered marine transportation provider The Vane Brothers Company has taken delivery of the Fort Schuyler, the latest Maryland-built tugboat to join the company’s fleet. Fort Schuyler is the 11th Sassafras Class tugboat contracted by Vane Brothers through Chesapeake Shipbuilding of Salisbury, Md. Vane Brothers Welcomes Latest Tug Newbuild

The Vane Brothers Company, a marine transportation provider headquartered in Baltimore, has taken delivery of Kings Point, the latest in a wave of Maryland-built tugboats. Constructed under the supervision of Vane Senior Port Captain Jim Demske, Kings Point is the 10th of 14 “Sassafras Class” tugboats contracted by Vane Brothers through Chesapeake Shipbuilding of Salisbury, Maryland. Kings Point also has a sister tug, Fort Schuyler, that was launched by Chesapeake Shipbuilding in April and is expected to be delivered this summer.

Chesapeake Launches Tugboat for Vane Brothers

Chesapeake Shipbuilding has launched another tugboat for Vane Brothers, the builder announced today. The tugboat, named Fort Schuyler, represents the 11th tugboat that Chesapeake Shipbuilding has built for Vane Brothers of the 14 contracted. The new tugboat is nearly identical to the previous 10 tugboats built for Vane Brothers - equipped with twin Caterpillar 3512 main engines producing a combined 3,000 horsepower, and a single drum hydraulic towing winch. The State University of New York Maritime College will hold its May Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 11 a.m., in the St. Mary’s Pentagon, Fort Schuyler, on the SUNY Maritime campus. Dr. Michael A. Cappeto, Interim President of the Maritime College, will preside over the Commencement. Approximately 220 students are expected to receive degrees during the ceremonies. John J. Ferriola, Chairman, CEO, and President of NUCOR Corporation, will receive an honorary doctorate degree and will deliver the remarks to graduates.
