Change of Command at USCG R&D Center

The U.S. Coast Guard Research and Development Center (RDC) held a Change of Command on June 16, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Fort Trumbull in New London. Current RDC Commanding Officer, Capt. Dan Keane, was relieved by Capt. Michael Chien. Capt. Keane held command since May 1, 2020. He retires with 24 years of service.During Capt. Keane’s tenure, the command operated seamlessly during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Research continued and the approved portfolio was executed. The U.S. Coast Guard Research and Development Center (RDC) on Monday celebrated its 50th anniversary during an open house event at the center’s campus next to Fort Trumbull in New London, Conn.The event, designed to showcase RDC history and ongoing work, and provide an opportunity to speak with its researchers, focused on several key themes, such as the impact past and current researchers have had on the service as well as appreciation for Southeastern Connecticut, including the City of New London, for its support to the Coast Guard and its resident RDC.On Sept.

CPA Selects GZA GeoEnvironmental for Work

Connecticut Port Authority announced  that GZA GeoEnvironmental will provide design and engineering solutions for repairs and modifications of Pier 7 located at Fort Trumbull.Working closely with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) – the facility owner – the Connecticut Port Authority is investing  in the project and will oversee GZA GeoEnvironmental during the study.Pier 7 is an important piece of Connecticut’s maritime infrastructure, and this project will identify the upgrades needed to improve its overall safety and structural integrity to allow for continued calls by Coast Guard and Naval vessels…

Coast Guard, Homeland Security Open Joint R&D Facility

The Coast Guard Research and Development Center, in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security, officially opened a joint research facility in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the R&D Center’s offices located at Fort Trumbull. The Science and Technology Innovation Center is a collaborative effort between DHS Science and Technology and the Coast Guard R&D Center dedicated to leveraging innovation, prototyping and rapid integration of high technology solutions to answer the operational challenges of the Coast Guard and DHS.

Mexican Tall Ship to visit New London

The ARM Cuauhtémoc, tall ship of the Mexican Navy, will visit New London May 2-6. The ship will be open for tours, and its crew is expected to visit the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Mayor Michael Passero announced. A 270-foot barque built in 1982, the Cuauhtémoc serves as a training ship for the Mexican Navy. The vessel, commanded by Capt. Pedro Mata Cervantes, is scheduled to arrive May 2 at 10 a.m. following a sail training trip that began March 12 in Acapulco Guerrero, Mexico, its homeport. The ARM designation used before the name of the vessel refers to Armada Republica Mexicana.

Tall Ship 'Eagle' Homeported for Christmas

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle departs Naval Submarine Base New London & returns to her home mooring at Fort Trumbull in New London. At 295 feet in length, the Eagle, known as “America’s Tall Ship,” is the largest tall ship flying the stars and stripes and the only active square-rigger in U.S. government service. Constructed in 1936 by the Blohm and Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, and originally commissioned as the Horst Wessel by the German Navy, the Eagle was taken by the United States as a war reparation following World War II.

Cummings Recognizes 100th Anniversary of USCG Academy

Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (MD-07) managed the passage of H.Con.Res. 258, Congratulating the Commandant of the Coast Guard and the Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy and its staff for 100 years of operation of the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. The School of Instruction to the U.S. Revenue Cutter Academy was established at Fort Trumbull in New London, Connecticut, in 1910, and later became known as the Coast Guard Academy after the consolidation of the Life Saving Service and the Revenue Cutter Service in 1915. The Academy moved to its present location along the banks of the Thames River in 1932. In1946, the former German Navy training vessel Horst Wessel was acquired by the United States for use by the Coast Guard and renamed Eagle…
