Deepwater Horizon Spill: Fraudulent Claimant Sentenced

The owner of a Fort Walton Beach business has been sentenced to six months in prison for committing fraud in collecting damages from the BP oil spill, reports the Daily News citing a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announcement. Arturo Molina, who has been in prison since he was arrested in March, will get credit for time served. He also must pay nearly $14,000 in restitution. An indictment handed down in February states that Molina “submitted false and fraudulent paychecks” to the Gulf Coast Claims Facility and received a check for $13,900 for losses to his business, A&M Professional Framing, reports Daily News. He submitted a second claim for $19,800 and included false and fraudulent income tax documents to support it, the indictment added, but it was reportedly not paid.

Tar Balls Reach Farther Down Florida Coast

According to a June 19 report from the Associate Press, tar balls washed up on Destin, Fort Walton and Panama City Beach, the farthest east the oil has been reported in the Sunshine State. Unfavorable onshore winds were pushing the oil closer, and more tar balls were expected to wash up in the next few days. A large plume of oil was about 30 miles offshore, officials said, and it would land on the Panama City-area beaches in the coming weeks unless the winds change for good. (Source: Associated Press)

Barry Misses, But Puts Serious Dent In GOM Production

Tropical Storm Barry veered away from oil and natural gas fields in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, but by that point the erratic tempest had already knocked a big dent in U.S. offshore energy production, at least temporarily. Two of the biggest players in the Gulf of Mexico energy industry said that as a precaution against the storm they had suspended large volumes of oil and gas production, which taken together, represent a big slice of total output from the Gulf. Shell Oil Co. -- the main U.S. subsidiary of European oil giant Royal Dutch/Shell -- said it suspended or "shut in" gross daily production of more than 300,000 barrels of crude oil and 1.2 billion cubic feet of gas. Chevron Corp. said it shut in gross daily production of 118,000 barrels of oil and 452 million cubic feet of gas.

Lockheed Martin Receives $67M Contract for VLS

Lockheed Martin has been awarded an initial $67 million contract to continue production, delivery and installation of the MK 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS) for the U.S. Navy. The contract includes production of launchers for two Arleigh Burke-class (DDG 51) Aegis-equipped destroyers, as well as a major upgrade of five other destroyers already equipped with MK 41 VLS. An additional contract option of $129 million for U.S. Navy and Foreign Military Sales requirements in support of Korea’s KDX-III shipbuilding program could raise the contract's total value to $196 million. United Defense, L.P. of Aberdeen, SD, will be issued a major subcontract to produce major subassemblies for the MK 41 VLS, as will Metric Systems in Fort Walton Beach, FL.
