U.S. 5th Fleet began a three-week unmanned and artificial intelligence integration event in Bahrain, Nov. 23, that will involve employing new platforms in the region for the first time.The event, called Digital Horizon, will advance the commandā€™s efforts to integrate new unmanned technologies while establishing the worldā€™s first unmanned surface vessel fleet by end of next summer. U.S. 5th Fleetā€™s efforts are focused on improving what U.S. and regional navies are able to see above, on and below the water.ā€œI am excited about the direction we are headed,ā€ said Vice Adm.

Heddle Shipyards Wins Terry Fox Life Extension Job

Heddle Shipyards said it has been awarded a $135.5 million dollar contract for the Vessel Life Extension (VLE) of the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Terry Fox.The nearly three-year project will involve an extensive engineering, planning and procurement phase, with shipyard work scheduled to begin in December 2023. This multi-year project will create and sustain over 200 hundred jobs at the Port Weller Dry Docks through the summer of 2025 when the CCGS Terry Fox is scheduled for redelivery.

USCG Report: Small Cutters Prove They Can Patrol a Big Ocean

The Coast Guardā€™s 353-ton, 154-foot fast response cutter (WPC) is capable of deploying independently to conduct missions that include port, waterways and coastal security; fishery patrols; search and rescue; and national defense. The service plans to build 64 of them to replace the 110-foot Island class patrol boats. The FRC has a range of 2,500 miles, but the endurance of the 24 crewmembers is normally limited to about five days based on the quantity of provisions carried. A containership that lost power and went adrift off Canada's East Coast has been towed to Sydney, Nova Scotia, the Canadian Coast Guard said.The Panamanian-flagged MSC Kim departed Halifax on March 3 en route to Montreal, but went adrift on March 9 after it suffered engine problems off Port au Port, Newfoundland and Labrador. CCGS Terry Fox, one the largest icebreakers in the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) fleet, has returned to service with new Thordon propeller shaft bearings after concluding that fitting laminate phenolic bearings would extend drydock time and costs.The 88-meter-long vessel, built in the 1980s, had been operating Thordonā€™s water lubricated elastomeric polymer bearings on both shafts for 24 years. Ships Swap: Genco Trades Six Older Vessels for Three Ultramaxes

Genco Shipping & Trading has entered into an agreement to acquire three modern, eco Ultramax bulk carriers in exchange for six older Handysize vessels, the largest U.S. headquartered dry bulk shipowner announced Monday. The transaction with an unnamed trading partner is structured as an asset swap without monetary consideration or additional capital required. The vessels are scheduled to be delivered to both parties through the first quarter of 2021.Genco, which aims to continue building scale in the Ultramax sector while divesting non-core assets, said the swap is part of its fleet moderniztion efforts, reducing the average age of its fleet by 0.3 years.
