Concordia Finally Heads for Scrapyard

The rusty hulk of the Costa Concordia began its journey to the scrapyard on Wednesday, after a two-year salvage operation off the Italian island where the cruise liner capsized two years ago, killing 32 people. Boats sounded horns and church bells rang as a tug boat slowly pulled the wreck of the liner, which was around two-and-a half times the size of the Titanic, away from the holiday island of Giglio, accompanied by a convoy of 14 vessels. Costa Concordia: Operations to Tow the Wreck Begin

Maneouvres began early on Wednesday to remove the rusty hulk of the Costa Concordia cruise liner from the Italian island where it struck rocks and capsized two years ago, killing 32 people. A convoy of 14 vessels, led by the tug boat Blizzard, will start to tow the Concordia later on Wednesday to a port near Genoa in northern Italy where it is due to arrive on Sunday, before being broken up for scrap. Over the past week, salvagers have slowly lifted the 114,500-tonne ship from underwater platforms by pumping air into 30 large metal boxes, or sponsons, attached to the hull. Costa Concordia Wreck: Winter Weather Precautions

Works to increase stability of the uprighted, but still grounded, wreck are in progress at Giglio island as winter approaches. Adverse weather conditions registered recently, have caused minor movements of the wreck, considered by engineers as  settlement  on the false seabed, confirm the need to move forward with the so-called winterization measures to further stabilize the wreck for the winter. Costa Concordia Wreck Rotation: Tentative Date Set

The rotation of the Concordia is fixed for six o'clock in the morning of Monday, September 16th. However, weather conditions have to be favorable and a final decision will be therefore communicated by 2 pm the day before, announces Italy government Civil Protection Commissioner Franco Gabrielli . The cruise shipl, which has rested partly submerged in shallow waters off the Tuscan island of Giglio since the accident in January 2012, will be rolled off the seabed and onto underwater platforms if all goes according to plan.

Costa Concordia Parbuckling to Get Green Light Soon

The salvage operation (known as the 'parbuckling project') to upright the wreck of the partially sunken 'Costa Concordia' has been given provisional approval by the Italian government's Civil Protection Department and is expected ot take place at a convenient date in September. The meeting convened in Rome was at the headquarters of the Civil Protection Department and was attended by the Emergency Commissioner Franco Gabrielli, as well as representatives from the Advisory Committee, the Observatory, the Micoperi-Titan Consortium and the cruise line Costa Crociere.

Costa Crociere & Titan-Micoperi representatives to present a progress report to the authorities for evaluation of the 'parbuckling project' & gain approval for wreck removal operations to commence in September 2013. The report will be presented to the Commissioner for the Concordia Emergency Franco Gabrielli, the Observatory for Concordia Removal and the Mayor of Giglio at Civil Protection headquarters in Rome. Once the parbuckling is completed, it will be essential to assess the conditions of the wreck and evaluate any technical adjustments required…

Costa Concordia Removal Plan Presented Today In Rome

With Costa Concordia Emergency Commissioner Franco Gabrielli in attendance, Costa Crociere S.p.A. and Italo-American consortium Titan-Micoperi, the winner of the tender tasked with performing the work, today presented their plan to remove the wreck of Costa Concordia from the coast of Giglio Island. Following a conference convened by the commissioner May 15, during which the relevant authorities provided the necessary permits, the work will begin in a few days and is expected to last about 12 months.

Costa Calls on Salvage Companies for Ship Removal Plans

Costa Crociere has set up a technical committee, with representatives from Costa Cruises, Carnival Corporation & plc, Fincantieri, Rina and sector experts, including academics, who will work for the best possible drawing up of the plan, on a joint basis with the competent authorities.
