Record Number of Women Admitted to Danish Maritime Training

The number of female students admitted to Danish maritime education programs has increased by 67%.Out of the 860 prospective students, 50 are women. Last year, that number was only 30.Anne Windfeldt Trolle, director of labor market, recruitment and training at Danske Rederier (Danish Shipping), says: "We are working hard to attract and retain more women in the industry, which is why I am incredibly happy to hear that we now see a record number of women who want a career at sea."Including women employed on the Danish ferries…

Monjasa Expands into Northern Europe and France

Monjasa expands its reach to Northern France and goes from two to three supply vessels in Northwest Europe. Providing a niche market alternative to the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) bunker hub has proven relevant for a growing number of customers and volumes are increasing. Steadily growing demand in the English Channel allows Monjasa to expand its services to cover Northern France as well. Monjasa is able to cover port areas from Dunkerque, Calais, Dieppe, Le Havre and all the way to Brest.

In 2016, Monjasa established a niche market in the English Channel as an alternative for shipowners and operators taking bunkers in the ARA hub. In this setup, MT Fredericia plays a significant role and currently performs exclusive bunkering operations in the Portland, Tongue Anchorage and Falmouth areas. The MT Fredericia is a 2008 purpose-built bunker tanker and from her current position she will continue fuelling vessels entering and exiting the SECA zone.

ABB Turbocharging Opens Service Facility in Denmark

ABB Turbocharging announced today it will celebrate the opening of a new service facility in Fredericia, Denmark on June 12, 2014. The ceremony will also mark the completion of the amalgamation of its activities in Norway, Denmark and Sweden into a single Local Business Unit (LBU). “With TURBOCHARGING SCANDINAVIA we merge three rather small units in Norway, Sweden and Denmark into a common, more powerful organization served by a well-integrated team with focus on customer needs across entire Scandinavia,” said LBU Manager, Joachim Bremer. ABB Turbocharging Scandinavia comprises Service Stations in Oslo & Bergen in Norway, Göteborg in Sweden and the new central workshop for Denmark in Fredericia. Additionally we have two service engineers and a sales team stationed in Copenhagen.

Dong to Spend $1.8 Billion A Year for Offshore Wind Farms

Dong Energy A/S plans to invest about $1.8 billion a year on offshore wind projects to offset a “challenging” environment for gas plants, as it ceases to build new coal power facilities, its chief said. That’s about what the world’s largest developer of offshore wind parks spent last year on turbines installed at sea. “We think that is around that level we will be working at in the coming years,” said Anders Eldrup, chief executive officer of the Fredericia, Denmark-based company. Dong announced that Eldrup, who spoke in an interview on March 9, is stepping down as chief executive. Finance director Carsten Krogsgaard Thomsen will be acting CEO until a new chief executive is found, it said, adding that there will be no change in the company’s strategy.

CMA CGM New Feeder Service from Hamburg

In mid-January, the French shipping company CMA CGM started operating a new feeder service between the Port of Hamburg and the Danish ports of Fredericia and Copenhagen, as well as Halmstad in Sweden and the Baltic Sea port of Szczecin in Poland. Irving Shipbuilding Delivers Tugs to Nordane

East Isle Shipyard in Prince Edward Island , Canada, a division of Irving Shipbuilding Inc., has delivered the first of four tugs to Nordane Shipping, Svendborg, Denmark on the 8th of September 2009. Present at the christening from the owner's side were Niels Hansen and Flemming Hansen along with their wive’s. The new Ice Class Tug was christened by the wife of the President of Irving Shipbuilding, Inc., Karen Durrell, her husband Steve Durrell hosted the event. The tug, Stevns Icequeen had undergone sea trials and was accepted by the owner as meeting all of the specification requirements.

Greek Oil Tanker Runs Aground

A Greek oil tanker carrying 81,200 tons of crude ran aground in Denmark but there was no immediate danger of an oil spill, authorities said. The Greece-registered Minerva Concert hit rocks off the island of Samsoe in central Denmark, the Danish Navy said. There were no reports of injuries among the crew or damage to the ship. Tugboats would attempt to pull the tanker free Tuesday, under the supervision of an environmental protection vessel, the navy said. The tanker was en route from the Danish port of Fredericia to Rotterdam, the Netherlands, when it ran aground. The Danish Maritime Authority is investigating. Source: Business Week
