Samsung Heavy and MISC Develop Floating CO2 Storage Unit

Samsung Heavy Industries has received basic certification for a floating CO2 storage unit (FCSU) from DNV.The FCSU, jointly developed by Samsung Heavy Industries and MISC, is 330 meters long and 64 meters wide, and has a high-pressure tank capacity that can store 100,000 cubic meters of liquefied CO2 at -50 degrees Celsius or less.The injection module mounted on the upper part of the hull secures the ability to send five million tons (MTPA) of CO2 per year to the depths of the seabed.

Electric Vehicles Introduced at Samsung Heavy Industry's Geoje Shipyard

Samsung Heavy Industries is introducing electric vehicles for business use at its Geoje shipyard.The shipyard has introduced 15 electric trucks and one electric passenger car as part of Korea’s zero-emission vehicle transition which it joined last February. Rolls-Royce's Power Systems Profitable Despite 17% Revenue Plunge

Rolls-Royce's Power Systems division has ended the 2020 financial year with an underlying operating profit of $247.3 million despite suffering a 17% drop in underlying revenue to $3.8 billion. This corresponds to an underlying operating margin of 6.5% (2019: 11.5%). Wärtsilä Ensures Compliance with the Polar Code

1 January 2017 was a historic milestone in the protection of our polar waters for future generations. On that day, International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (the Polar Code) came into force. The Polar Code is aimed at protecting ships and the people aboard them, both seafarers and passengers, in the harsh environment of the waters surrounding our two poles, Arctic and Antarctic. The Polar Code covers the full range of shipping-related matters relevant to navigation in waters surrounding the two poles, including ship design, construction and equipment as well as operational and training concerns. Also, search and rescue, the protection of the unique environment and eco-systems of the Polar Regions are covered by the Code.

Shipbuilder Sustainability Knowledge Base presented to Dutch Govt.

The Shipbuilder Sustainability Knowledge Base has been presented on sustainability day (10-10) to Salima Belha (member of the Dutch parliament) and Brigit Gijsbers (director of maritime affaires at Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment). The Dutch trade association Netherlands Maritime Technology (NMT) collected over 175 sustainable maritime solutions and selected 10 examples to spotlight in a sustainability maritime brochure. Among this 10 highlighted examples the Shipbuilder Sustainability Knowledge Base can be found. Harbor Breeze Cruises Expands Fleet with AAM Built Catamaran

All American Marine, Inc. (AAM), together with Harbor Breeze Cruises, has announced the completion and delivery of an aluminum catamaran passenger vessel to operate in the Los Angeles and Long Beach harbors. The new vessel, M/V La Espada, is a multi-purpose vessel and will provide harbor tours, whale watch cruises, dinner cruises, and charter ferry service to Catalina Island. La Espada, whose name means ‘the sword’, is 83’ x 29.5’ and is certified to carry 250 passengers. Harbor Breeze Cruises previously contracted with All American Marine to build a similar catamaran, the M/V Triumphant, in 2013. Hercules-2 Officially Launched

MAN Diesel & Turbo, Wärtsilä and Winterthur Gas & Diesel to collaborate on major, EU-funded project. A major cross-industry initiative led by MAN Diesel & Turbo, Wärtsilä, and Winterthur Gas & Diesel, to develop basic technologies for use in 2- and 4-stroke marine engines has been officially launched. The Hercules-2 project is aimed at fostering environmentally sustainable and more efficient shipping. It is in line with general European Union policy and is partly funded by the EU. Altogether, 32 marine industry partners from 11 different companies, 16 universities, and five research organisations are cooperating in this project, with NTU Athens as coordinator. The R&D efforts focus on four main areas.

Topaz Selects ABS Fleet Management Software

Offshore support vessel company Topaz Energy and Marine has selected ABS as its fleet management software provider. Topaz will install the ABS Nautical Systems Fleet Management Software suite on 58 of its core vessels to more efficiently plan for maintenance work, minimize downtime and reduce costs associated with drydocking. SMM 2014 Witnesses Record Turnout

SMM was another full success. Hybrid Turbocharged Car Carrier Runs Sea Trials

The car carrier that mounts the world first Hybrid Turbocharger with Electric Assist function and Variable Turbine Inlet (VTI) ran its sea trial from April 17-22 and proved the world's first electric-assist turbocharger function on actual ship. The turbocharger was manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Engine Co., Ltd. (MHI-MME). By using the electric-assist function, the ship will be able to save energy consumption substantially at slow steaming by reducing the amount of time of auxiliary blower operation. The turbocharger combines the function of electric generation as a hybrid turbocharger and that of VTI in addition to the electric assist function. This ship is a car carrier built by Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co., Ltd.

SMM India - CLOSING REPORT

With some 3,000 delegates and visitors from all parts of the world, SMM India, shipbuilding, machinery & marine technology international trade fair, closed after the three scheduled days of the exhibition and accompanying conference, held in Mumbai from 7 to 9 April. This second event established SMM India as one of the most important maritime trade fairs on the subcontinent. Wind Power Deal for Rauma

On December 20, 2011, STX Finland Oy and VentusVis Oy signed a letter of intent, the purpose of which is to develop wind park for the city of Rauma on Finland’s west coast. The goal is to get building permissions for three wind turbines within the UPM Rauma mill site and one within the area of the STX Rauma Shipyard. VentusVis Oy is a company which develops land assets owned by UPM suitable for wind power investments and STX Finland Oy offers construction, user, maintenance and lifecycle services for wind parks. VentusVis Oy is a joint venture between UPM-Kymmene Oyj and TuuliSaimaa Oy. It aims to convert land assets owned by UPM suitable for wind power production. STX Finland Oy’s long-term goal is to develop into a turnkey deliverer of offshore wind parks in particular.

GE, Dept. of Energy Enter Partnership

GE Global Research in Niskayuna announced it has entered into a $27 million partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy to design a next-generation offshore wind turbine. As part of this new project, GE and the Department of Energy will collaborate on research to develop a prototype of a 5-7 megawatt offshore wind turbine that would be nearly twice today's industry standard, GE said. The research for the new project will be conducted at GE's Global Research Center in Niskayuna during the next three or four years. Wind energy is a key component of GE's ecomagination initiative. GE announced ecomagination in May. The company spends $750 million a year now on what it calls "ecotechnology," an amount that is expected to double by 2010.
