TUI Reports Loss as Omicron Trumps Summer Recovery

Finite Element Strength Analysis for ATB Load Box

The loading and response dynamics of an Articulated Tug & Barge (ATB) load box are complex. They typically require advanced finite element analysis methods and procedures to design an efficient support structure to ensure a durable design and to facilitate meeting Class strength requirements. To study the dynamic response of the loads imparted on the tug from the barge, a finite element analysis (FEA) is carried out. Loading conditions that include the static sea pressure, gravity loads, and reaction forces from the ATB Coupler are incorporated into the FEA analysis.

Second US Aircraft Carrier Enters Mediterranean

The U.S. aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower entered the Mediterranean late on Monday, the U.S. Navy said, at a time when U.S. officials are raising alarm over Russia's maritime expansion. The Eisenhower, also known as the "Ike," will relieve the USS Harry S. Truman carrier strike group which later this month heads back to the United States after an extended eight-month deployment. The Eisenhower, which also leads a strike group of cruisers, destroyers and warplanes, is scheduled to continue on to the Gulf to participate in U.S. air strikes on Islamic State targets in Iraq and Syria.

Meeting New Heated Cargo Vessel Regs

Marcon Brokers Sale of Ocean-Going Tugboat

Marcon International, Inc. of Coupeville, Washington, says it has sold the U.S. flag ocean-going twin screw tug "Melvin E. Lemmerhirt" to U.S. buyers on a private & confidential basis. The 3,900BHP tug was built in 1973 for Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. as one of the company's largest tugs by Southern Shipbuilding of Slidell, Louisianaas Hull No. 102. Southern Ship always had a reputation of building fine tugs, building their first in 1903. The shipyard was originally established by Fritz Salmen in the 1880s, becoming Slidell Shipbuilding in 1914 and Canulette Shipbuilding in 1919. After passing through several hands, it was renamed Southern Shipbuilding in 1957. The yard was eventually closed and the site razed in 1993.

Hamburg Simplifies Access for Shipments

The operational parameters for the high-volume and heavy goods shipments into the Port of Hamburg, generating such significant added value, are in need of sustained improvement through efficient infrastructure and lean authorization procedures. Such is the call from the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, der Unternehmensverband Hafen Hamburg (UVHH), Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM) and der Verband Straßengüterverkehr und Logistik Hamburg (VSH). “Three out of four machines manufactured in Germany go for export, and it is therefore essential to secure the access to main traffic routes and overseas ports,” stated Fritz Horst Melsheimer, President of the Chamber of Commerce.

Offshore Wind Investment: DONG Energy Attracts DKK11-billion

An investment agreement has been signed between  ATP, Goldman Sachs funds and PFA to invest DKK 11 billion in DONG Energy A/S. The final closing of the transaction is conditional on the approval of the State Finance Committee of the Danish Parliament. Fritz Schur, Chairman of the Board of DONG Energy A/S, says: 
"We look forward to welcoming ATP, Goldman Sachs funds and PFA to DONG Energy's 
ownership group. The new equity entails that we can carry out our growth 
strategy, including our significant investment programme within offshore wind. "

SunCoke Energy Acquire Kanawha River Terminals

KRT owns 4 coal handling facilities, the largest of which is the Ceredo Terminal located on the Ohio River in West Virginia. SunCoke Energy Partners' (SXCP) wholly-owned subsidiary has executed a definitive agreement to acquire 100 percent of the ownership interest in Kanawha River Terminals LLC (“KRT”) for $86 million. The Ceredo Terminal located on the Ohio River in West Virginia is strategically located to serve both inbound and outbound rail logistics provided by CSX and Norfolk Southern and the capability to offload and load barges. As a result, the Ceredo terminal is able to serve both domestic and international export markets. KRT’s other coal handling facilities are located on the Big Sandy and Kanawha Rivers, as well as on Kentucky Highway 1185 near Louisa, Kentucky.

CMI Orders VSTEP Simulators

The Caribbean Maritime Institute has ordered multiple VSTEP simulators for its new high tech simulation center at the campus in Kingston, Jamaica. VSTEP will deliver all simulator solutions for the facility, including a NAUTIS Full Mission Bridge Simulator and a Class C Engine Room Simulator.
