U.S. Ten years on, thereā€™s little certain about ballast water management regulations that the industry can chart a course around other than that it will be expensive ā€“ possibly the most costly marine retrofit to date. With install estimates running from $500,000 to as much as $5 million per vessel, across some 68,000 commercial ships estimated by the IMO to transfer 7 billion tons of  ballast water annually ā€“ industry players say we could be looking at as much as an $80 billion market. Eventually, that is, because there is not a lot of activity right now.

Oil Declines in Thin, Volatile Trading

Global benchmark Brent crude oil closed down nearly a dollar a barrel Friday after a day of choppy trading despite expectations of new investments in the new year, as strong mid-day rallies in crude fizzled. Brent was down 91 cents at $56.42 a barrel. Earlier, it touched a post-2009 low of $55.48, having averaged around $110 a barrel between 2011 and 2013. Front-month U.S. crude for February delivery settled down 58 cents a barrel at $52.69, before a steep 50-cent drop post-settlement. The U.S. dollar index was 0.9 percent stronger on Friday. The combination of the supply glut and the strong dollar has been a "double whammy" for crude oil prices, said Walter Zimmerman, chief technical analyst at United-ICAP. "This is a long-term cyclical downtrend," Zimmerman said.

Oil Pushes Lower, Undeterred by Bullish Jobs Report

U.S. crude oil closed at its lowest since July 2009 on Friday as Brent averaged below $70 a barrel in the week for the first time since 2010, as strong U.S. employment data did little to lift the oil market's bearish mood. Both contracts continued to slide as the market grappled with oversupply resulting from the U.S. shale boom and the recent decision by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries not to cut production. Prices increased from lows earlier in the day after stronger-than-expected U.S. employment data. November nonfarm payrolls rose 321,000, the most since January 2012. Still, the market remained lackluster and subdued, traders said.

However, with competitively-priced Chinese brands flooding the Asia Pacific market, local participants will be hard pressed to make their presence felt or get a toe-hold. The report says that It is vital for foreign companies to establish a local presence to gain trust and support from their partners and clients, obtain contacts and attract venture capital funding.
