In 2019, Oldendorff Carriers signed a research agreement with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Center for Bits and Atoms to investigate disruptive improvements in ship design, propulsion, and alternative energy sources to help achieve the enhanced decarbonization targets to 2050. As part of their agreement, Oldendorff Carriers asked MIT to conduct a study on the long-term stability and degradation of a B20 advanced biofuel blend.Biofuels offer a drop-in fuel option, reducing GHG emissions from a life-cycle perspective.

Viva Energy Australia announced the launch of its new very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO), developed to meet the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) new regulations on fuel sulphur content.The new regulations will limit the sulphur content in marine fuels to 0.5% from the current level of 3.5%, in a move to reduce sulphur oxide emissions globally. China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) said it has formally launched a new business CSSC Marine Service Co., Ltd, to coincide with the inauguration of its new logistics center within the Yangshang free trade zone, Shanghai. The inauguration was marked with a ceremony on June 30, 2017, attended by more than 150 industry representatives from ship owning, managing and operating companies, along with key cooperation partners ABB, MAN PrimServ and WinGD. Able to accommodate more than 20,000 kinds of original small parts including fuel injection equipment, piston rings, pipes, flaps and valves, and large parts such as cylinder liners, covers and piston crowns. The third party operated center forms phase one of an overall project for CSSC Marine Service Co., Ltd.

Wärtsilä has achieved Tier 2 marine certification under the emissions control legislation of the US EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) for the Wärtsilä 26, in-line marine diesel engine type. This is the latest step in Wärtsilä’s continuing, proactive development of its engines for lower exhaust emissions and reduced environmental impact. The Wärtsilä 26 engine is a four-stroke heavy-duty marine engine of 260 mm cylinder bore by 320 mm piston stroke built in in-line and Vee-form configurations.

The Wärtsilä 46F is the latest in the highly successful marine engine series launched in 1987 with the Vasa 46, as it was then called. Though visually similar to the original Wärtsilä 46, with similar bore and stroke, the Wärtsilä 46F is a new engine with the latest technology applied to all major components. It is packed with new features including common rail injection and scaleable embedded control, for high performance and record-low exhaust emissions, regardless of fuel quality. It is ideally suited to applications which place a premium on optimum space layout, savings in operating and maintenance costs, superior environmental performance and fuel adaptability. Wärtsilä Corporation opened a new, fully-equipped service workshop close to Saigon port in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. This is part of Wärtsilä's development of its business activities in the Vietnamese shipping, shipbuilding and power industries. Wärtsilä recently opened a new branch office in Hanoi. Wärtsilä has had a permanent presence in Vietnam since 1994 when it set up a representative office in Ho Chi Minh City. In 1998 Wärtsilä obtained a business licence to operate as a 100% foreign-owned service company and founded Wärtsilä Vietnam Co Ltd.

Wärtsilä has acquired the German service company INTEC Injectortechnic GmbH. The Hamburg-based company is specialized in fuel injection equipment, providing installation and services of injection components for marine diesel engines. The annual net sales are approx. $3.8m and the number of personnel is 17. The acquisition strengthens Wärtsilä's competence in area of this important engine technology. The company became a part of Wärtsilä on the 1st of July, when the deal was closed.
