Fuel Management Tech Helps CalMac Reduce Emissions

Fuel management technology is helping Scottish ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac) to meet its targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Last year the company installed advanced Royston enginei fuel management systems across its entire large vessel fleet – the first UK ferry company to do so – as part of its Project Ecoship program to improve fuel consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Krill Systems Inc. have installed their Vessel Fuel Measurement and Monitoring Systems (VFMMS) in 6 NOAA Fisheries survey vessels. Installations on NOAA Ship Bell M. Shimada, NOAA Ship Oscar Dyson and NOAA Ship Ferdinand R. Hybrid-powered Container Reach Stacker for UK Market

The world's first hybrid reach stacker, developed by Konecranes, is soon to be available in the UK through Cooper SH. With a 45 tonne lifting capacity, the new SMV 4531 TB5 HLT features a hybrid diesel/electric driveline, an electrified hydraulic lifting system, and a super capacitor based energy storage - significantly cutting fuel consumption and emissions. Estimated fuel consumption will be around 10 liters/hour during normal handling of fully loaded containers, significantly less than with conventional reach stackers.

Krill Installations on NOAA Vessels Complete

Krill Systems Inc., a provider in advanced Vessel Fuel Measurement and Monitoring Systems (VFMMS), is pleased to announce successful installation and sea trial of two systems on-board the NOAA research vessels Henry B. Bigelow and Pisces. NOAA Ship Henry B. Bigelow and NOAA Ship Pisces represent the first two fittings of a multiple vessel NOAA contract awarded in a competitive bid, on an unrestricted basis, to Krill Systems to implement VFMMS (Vessel Fuel Measuring and Management Systems) within their fleet. The Bigelow and the Pisces are 208’ LOA NOAA fisheries survey vessels operating as part of the NOAA Atlantic Fleet. They are both actively engaged in research missions.

Green Ships: Politicians Ready if Industry Not

More than 190 participants at the 5th annual Green Ship Technology conference in Rotterdam on March 11-12 explored the latest tide of ‘stick and carrot’ options for making shipping environmentally sustainable. Eco-friendly solutions aired at the forum ranged from legislative compulsion to commercially beneficial inducements. On the one hand, there were stark warnings that politicians are preparing to impose mandatory emissions rules if there is no firm outcome to meetings of the International Maritime Organization marine environment protection committee (MEPC) scheduled between now and mid-2009.
