Australia Bans MSC Containership Over Safety Deficiencies

A Liberian-flagged containership operated by MSC Shipmanagement Ltd (MSC) has been banned from Australian ports for 90 days over a long list of safety failures and deficiencies, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said.AMSA said it issued a refusal of access direction notice to the MSC Kymea II following months of sub-standard performance from the ship’s operator, including critical maintenance issues.The agency's inspection of the vessel found 21 deficiencies in total, including a defective free fall lifeboat steering system, defective fire safety systems, dangerously-stored flammable materials, and multiple wasted or missing…

St. Johns to Construct Unique Tankship for IMF

Palatka, Fla. based St. Johns Ship Building is constructing a self-propelled, 10,000 gallon, USCG Inspected, double-hull tankship for Intracoastal Marine Fuel (IMF) of Jupiter, Fla. Designed by JMS Naval Architects, the 53- by 18-foot tankship design is unique for its compact size and diesel outboard propulsion.The innovative design is the smallest vessel to receive U.S. Coast Guard plan approval as a Subchapter D tankship.IMF will use the vessel to deliver marine diesel to mega-yachts, commercial, and recreational vessels in the Palm Beach, Fla. area.

Sri Lanka Plugs Leak on Fire-stricken Supertanker

Sri Lanka has initiated repair work on the ruptured fuel oil tank in the engine room of a stricken fully loaded oil supertanker after plugging the leak, the country's Navy said.The supertanker is currently 52 nautical miles (96 kms) from the Sri Lankan coast, Navy spokesman Indika de Silva said. "Salvors are on board, they plugged the leak and the repair is still going...They have vacated the ruptured tank and transferred the dirty water into the ballast section," de Silva told Reuters. A fire broke out in the engine room of the Greek-owned New Diamond tanker on Sept.

Singapore LNG and YTL PowerSeraya Appoint New CEOs

Singapore-based energy company YTL PowerSeraya and LNG terminal operator Singapore LNG Corp (SLNG) announced that they have appointed new chief executive officers (CEOs).YTL PowerSeraya said that han Swee Huat has decided to step down as CEO of the Group with effect from 15 January 2019. Chan plans to retire but will continue to serve as an advisor to parent company YTL Power International.He will be succeeded by industry veteran John Ng, who was most recently the CEO of Singapore LNG Corporation (SLNG). Not new to YTL PowerSeraya,  Ng had served as the company’s CEO (2009 to 2013) and prior to the appointment, held numerous leadership positions within the company.Chan took over the helm as CEO of YTL PowerSeraya from Ng in October 2013, a role which he has held for five years.

Offshore Supply Vessels: The U.S. Can Compete

After all, the industry was created in America ... it is only appropriate that the United States dominate it again. Offshore supply vessels (OSVs), also known as platform supply vessels (PSVs), have been a distinct vessel type since 1956, when the MV Ebb Tide was placed into service in the Gulf of Mexico. Ebb Tide was designed by Alden J. “Doc” Laborde to meet the growing demand for vessels to service the increasing number of offshore oil drilling rigs in those waters. Previously, this new industry had been served, albeit inadequately, by existing vessels, particularly surplus amphibious assault barges. Ebb Tide was designed with the pilot house at the bow and with an open deck from there aft to the stern.

OW Bunker Launches Australia Operations

OW Bunker, a physical distributor and reseller of marine fuels, announced the launch of a physical distribution operation in Australia. The move is part of OW Bunker’s strategy to further expand the company’s global physical distribution presence in key locations for customers, ensuring end-to-end quality in the services and products that it provides. OW Bunker has leased a fuel oil tank in Port Kembla, New South Wales. The company will provide vessels with a full range of products including RMG 380 cSt and RME 180 cSt fuel oil ex-pipe and DMA gas oil by road tanker.

Hong Kong Conducts Oil Spill Exercise

An annual oil spill response joint exercise, this year code-named Oilex 2013, was held on October 17 off Ha Mei Wan, Lamma Island, to test responses in combating oil pollution in Hong Kong waters. Under the Maritime Oil Spill Response Plan, the Marine Department coordinated the exercise and other government departments including the Civil Aid Service, the Auxiliary Medical Service, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, the Government Flying Service (GFS) and the Hong Kong Police Force participated. Several oil companies and Hong Kong Response Limited also took part in the exercise.

Alfa Laval Now Offers Sustainable Solutions

Global marine supplier Alfa Laval now offers a set of sustainable solutions designed to help ship owners and operators comply with current and pending environmental regulations. Grouped under the conceptual name “Pure thinking”, the products will provide security as existing legislation is tightened, as well as compliance with new laws such as those that will regulate ballast water treatment. Captain of Korean Flagged Ship Sentenced

Hae Wan Yang, 54, of South Korea, was sentenced on Dec. 30 in U.S. District Court in Tacoma to two months of home confinement in the United States and two years of supervised release for violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships by knowingly failing to maintain an accurate Garbage Record Book. Yang was the Captain of the M/V Pan Voyager a ship belonging to STX Pan Ocean Co., Ltd., a South Korean Shipping Company. The inaccuracy was a failure to record a dumping incident during which approximately six 55-gallon drums, thirty plastic lined rice sacks, and approximately two hundred garbage bags containing oil contaminated grain were thrown into the ocean during a voyage from Korea to Longview, Washington.

Port Re-Opens to Deep-Draft Vessels

The Coast Guard Captain of the Port for Brunswick, Ga., has re-opened the port to deep-draft vessels Thursday at approximately 3:30 p.m. The captain of the port made the decision to re-open the port to deep-draft vessels after an Army Corps of Engineers depth survey that did not indicate any obstructions that might compromise the safety of additional deep-draft traffic. An initial damage assessment of the Centaurus Leader revealed a two inch wide by 22-foot long gash in the hull of the ship.

Statement from IMC on Selendang Ayu Incident

With deep regret, by late Friday night, IMC had formally accepted that the six seafarers who remain missing following the crash of a United States Coast Guard’s rescue helicopter must now be presumed dead. Peter Chew, Group Managing Director of IMC made a statement through the Joint Command Information Centre following the Coast Guard’s announcement that the Search and Rescue operation was halted by nightfall on Friday. IMC continues to mourn its missing men and is doing all it can for their families and loved ones. Frederick Chavalit Tsao, the IMC Chairman, arrived in Alaska on Saturday morning to see the crew of the Selendang Ayu and meet all involved in the emergency operations. On Sunday he was in Juneau to meet Admiral James C.

BAE Systems Awarded Second Contract for SBX-1

BAE Systems has been awarded a second contract from Boeing for work on the Sea-Based X-Band Radar (SBX-1), a floating, self-propelled, mobile missile warning radar station. The radar arrived at BAE Systems Hawaii Shipyards in Pearl Harbor from Alaska on June 26 and will remain there through February 2008. The company had previously performed maintenance work on the SBX-1 in 2006. BAE Systems will conduct maintenance and systems upgrades to include fuel oil tank cleaning; tow bridle repairs; a deadweight survey; antenna installation; catwalk and ladder repairs; crane upgrades and additions; galley and scullery upgrades; and will install a quick launch recovery boat. SBX-1 is part of the United States Missile Defense System, operated by the Missile Defense Agency.

United Defense Shipyard Awarded $4.45M Contract

United Defense Industries, Inc. announced the $4.45 million award to its subsidiary, Southwest Marine, by the Supervisor of Shipbuilding and Repair, San Diego, Calif., for the fixed-price Dry Docking Selected Restricted Availability (DSRA) on USS McCLUSKY (FFG-41). The ship, a Perry class guided missile frigate home-ported in San Diego, fulfills a Protection of Shipping mission as an Anti-Submarine Warfare combatant for amphibious expeditionary forces, underway replenishment groups and merchant convoys. The work is scheduled to begin on January 15, 2003, and be completed on March 19, 2003. The work package includes, but is not limited to, dry docking, underwater hull inspection, repairs to the potable water tank, ballast tank, fuel oil tank, superstructure and main propulsion shafting.

Airtours Ship Hits The Rocks

Airtours said its Carousel Nassau cruise liner, damaged after hitting rocks while leaving the port of Calica, near Cancun, Mexico, was making its own way to a dry dock in Mobile, Ala. for damage assessment. The vessel was leaving port on Sunday at 0200 local time, on the first day of its cruise, under the control of a local pilot, when a gust of wind caused it to strike rocks, damaging one of its propellers and puncturing a fuel oil tank, the spokesman said. He said no more than seven tons of oil were spilled, the crew contained most of the spill within a boom, and dispersed the oil with a mixture of chemicals and detergents. There have been no reports of pollution from the spill, he added. At the time of the incident there were 924 American, Canadian and British passengers on board.

CH3OH: Make Room for Methanol

The newest buzz among offshore operators serving the oil and gas rigs in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) is the increased use of methanol (CH3OH) by oil companies and contract drillers. This has meant more work for supply boats carrying this alcohol product to rigs along with rig water, fuel oil and liquid and bulk mud. Methanol is used to keep the flow lines from the wellhead to the surface of the water from becoming restricted or blocked. Restricted flow from wells is becoming an increasing problem for oil companies and drilling contractors whose bottom line depends on getting every drop of oil from a well. Flow assurance is a critical issue, especially with longer tiebacks in deepwater drilling operations.
