Singapore is set to get new technology to help in preventing ship collisions.The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said it has engaged the services of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research's Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC), Singapore Management University (SMU) and Fujitsu to develop new predictive technologies for maritime vessel traffic management. These predictive technologies will tap the power of artificial intelligence and big data analytics, to enhance navigational safety within the Port of Singapore. Mitsui O.S.K. This project is a part of MOL's initiative to assess the effectiveness of AI technology, and aims to reduce fuel consumption and vessels' environmental impact by verifying the accuracy of the technology, using Fujitsu's AI Technology to estimate vessel performance at sea. MOL provided actual voyage data collected from MOL fleet in operation to Fujitsu Laboratories, which, along with Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, verified the data by using their jointly developed machine learning method. Verification methods: Learned the correlation of each item of operation data using Fujitsu's unique AI technology and high-dimensional statistics analysis technology, and established the technology that estimates vessel performance.

Fujitsu Laboratories  announced that it has conducted a trial of a ship performance estimation technology(1) together with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and Ube Shipping & Logistics, Ltd. Developed by Fujitsu Laboratories and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT), the technology can predict figures such as ship speed and fuel consumption. The results of the trial showed that the technology is capable of estimating ship performance with an estimated margin of error under 1.5%, both on the ocean and near the coast, and in a variety of weather and wave conditions. With this technology, it is possible for operators to accurately predict ship courses that will reduce fuel consumption, leading to lower fuel costs.

On November 30 at NYK’s 10th annual Environmental Management Conference in Tokyo, Asahi Unyu Kaisha Ltd. The U.S. State Department has approved the likely sale to Japan of two Lockheed Martin Corp Aegis combat systems valued at $1.5 billion, a deal aimed at boosting Japan's defenses against a ballistic missile attack, the U.S. Defense Department said Friday. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which oversees foreign arms sales, said the Aegis combat systems and associated equipment would be installed on two new Japanese guided missile destroyers, or DDGs, expanding Japan's ability to carry out joint military missions with the U.S. Navy. "The addition of two new Aegis DDGs to Japan's fleet will afford more flexibility and capability to counter regional threats and continue to enhance stability in the region," DSCA said in a notification to U.S. lawmakers that was dated Aug.

Hatteland Display, made several sales level appointments. Goetz Vogelmann, a Hatteland Display employee for the past six years, was appointed as Sales Director Commercial. Vogelmann joined Hatteland Display after five years at LCD manufacturer, Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe. Knut Vidar Lauritsen, President of Hatteland Display, will also take on a Business Development role. Terje Akerholt, formerly Director of Sales, Commercial Division, was appointed as Sales Manager Commercial. Akerholt joined Hatteland Display in September 2007.

The company recently had its range of hydraulic EC to PK shell and tube oil coolers design approved for marine use by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and now hold certificate no. 02-LD302798-PDA. Bowman heat exchangers and oil coolers are suitable for use on engines up to 1,400 kW (1,880 hp) and for gear boxes up to 1,800 kW (2,400 hp).
