Austal Lays Keel for Fourth U.S. Navy Vessel

Austal held a keel-laying ceremony for the fourth Joint High Speed Vessel Fall River (JHSV 4), one of ten Austal-designed 103-meter U.S. Navy Joint High Speed Vessels under contract with the U.S. Navy. The ship’s sponsor, Diane Bemus Patrick, was present at the ceremony to authenticate the keel. Mrs. Patrick, First Lady of Massachusetts where the city of Fall River is located, was chosen to sponsor the ship by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus. Mrs. Patrick was assisted by Doc Selvie who is an “A” Class welder that has been part of the Austal team since May of 2007.

Austal Sets Keel of U.S. Navy's JHSV 3

On May 3, 2012, Austal held a keel-laying ceremony for the third Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV), one of nine Austal-designed 103-meter U.S. Navy Joint High Speed Vessels under contract with the U.S. Navy. Austal invited Representative Jo Bonner to authenticate the keel. He was assisted by Jeff Cellon who is an “A” Class welder that has been part of the Austal team since May of 2010. A traditional keel-laying ceremony marks the first significant milestone in the construction of the ship.

Austal Begins Final Assembly of JHSV 3

The third Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) is taking shape on the waterfront.

JHSV 3 one of 5 Navy Vessels Under Construction at Austal USA. The third Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) is taking shape on the waterfront. The first of 43 modules for JHSV 3 have been successfully transported from the Module Manufacturing Facility (MMF) and erected in the final assembly bay on the waterfront. Austal Opens Washington Office

Providing local support to Navy customer. Austal has announced the opening of Austal USA’s Washington DC Operations Office at 100 M Street, SE, Suite 310. The facility will allow Austal Government Programs and Business Development personnel to use the location as a base of Washington DC operations. The new Washington office director, Mr. Ronald Mahaffey, is a veteran of Huntington-Ingalls Shipbuilding, where he served as Director of Surface Combatant Operations. Prior to that assignment, Ron spent nearly 14 years in the post-delivery environment, working in the Ingalls Planning Yard on both the DD 963 and CG 47 programs. Ron retired from the Navy in 1989 as a Chief Warrant Officer (CWO4) with over 30 years of expertise in the electronics field.

Austal Lays Keel for Second JHSV

Three Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV) currently under construction. On November 8, 2011, Austal held a keel-laying ceremony for its second Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV), Choctaw County (JHSV 2), one of seven Austal-designed 103-meter U.S. Navy Joint High Speed Vessels under contract with the U.S. Department of Defense. Captain Henry W. Stevens, III (USN), Strategic and Theater Sealift Program Manager, PMS 385, served as the Authenticator for today’s ceremony. He was assisted by Brandon Mims. Brandon is an “A” Class welder that has been part of the Austal team since June of 2007.

AUSTAL STARTS FABRICATION OF JHSV 3

Austal announces that Congressman Jo Bonner (R-AL) commemorated the official start of fabrication for the third Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV 3), one of seven Austal-designed 103-meter U.S. Navy Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV) under contract with the U.S. Department of Defense. “The race is on,” said Austal USA President and Chief Operating Officer, Joe Rella, “the world is about to learn just how much value Austal’s investments in modular ship fabrication offers our Navy and Military Sealift Command customers.

Austal Awarded Construction of JHSV 6 & 7

The U.S. Navy has exercised contract options funding the construction sixth and seventh Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV), as part of a ten-ship program potentially worth over $1.6b.The construction contract for both vessels is valued at approximately $313m. Austal USA’s President and Chief Operating Officer Joe Rella cited the Mobile shipyard’s continuing growth as a key factor. With options remaining for a further three vessels, the JHSV program is set deliver a predictable revenue stream of US$347.3 million (AUD$330 million) per year from 2012 to 2015. As prime contractor, Austal was awarded the construction contract for the first 103-meter JHSV in November 2008, with options for nine additional vessels between FY09 and FY13.

Austal Awarded Contract for JHSV 4 & 5

Austal received word to move forward with the construction contract for the fourth and fifth vessels of the U.S. Department of Defense’s next generation multi-use platform, the Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV), as part of a program potentially worth over $1.6b. Austal received funding previously from the Navy, valued at $99,557,548, to acquire long lead-time material, to include diesel engines, water jets and reduction gears, for these two vessels in June 2010. The additional work is valued at approximately $204.6m. As Prime contractor, Austal was awarded the construction contract for the first 103-meter JHSV in November 2008, with options for nine additional vessels expected to be exercised between FY09 and FY13.

JHSV 2: Austal Starts Construction

Less than one year after beginning fabrication of Spearhead (JHSV 1), Austal has commenced construction on Vigilant (JHSV 2), the second of up to ten 103-m Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV). Austal was selected as prime contractor in November 2008 to design and build the first JHSV, with options for nine additional vessels expected to be exercised between FY09 and FY13. Since then, Austal has received construction contracts for JHSV 1, JHSV 2, and JHSV 3 and Long Lead Time Material contracts for JHSV 4 and JHSV 5.

Austal USA to Prime LCS Bid

Austal USA and Bath Iron Works (BIW) have agreed to revoke their current teaming arrangement. This strategic decision allows Austal USA to act as prime contractor in the upcoming bid for 10 U.S. Navy Littoral Combat Ships (LCS). The U.S. Navy is expected to award the contract for two LCSs, including options for an additional eight vessels, by the end of US FY10. In the event that Austal USA is awarded the FY10 contract, potentially worth up to $4.8b, it will continue to act as Prime Contractor for future LCS bids. General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems, which is currently the systems integrator in the program, will now subcontract to Austal USA…

Austal Contract for JHSV 2 and 3

The U.S. Navy has exercised contract options funding the construction of two additional Austal Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV) – as part of an existing 10-vessel, $1.6b program. Austal previously received US Navy funding for long lead-time material, including diesel engines, water jets and reduction gears, for these two vessels in June 2009. The additional work is valued at approximately $208m. Intended as the U.S. Department of Defense’s next-generation multi-use platform, the two 338 ft high speed vessels will be constructed at Austal’s US facility, located in Mobile, Ala.

Austal Commences JHSV Construction

Austal has received authorization from the U.S. Navy to commence construction on the first of up to ten 338-ft Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV). After Austal successfully completed the Production Readiness Review (PRR) and necessary DoD approvals were obtained, the Navy authorized Austal’s Mobile, Ala. facility to immediately begin construction of Fortitude (JHSV 1). As the US Department of Defense’s next generation multi-use platform, the JHSV will provide rapid intra-theater deployment/transportation of personnel, equipment and supplies.

Austal Opens New Shipbuilding Facility

Austal has officially opened its new Modular Manufacturing Facility (MMF), equipping its U.S. shipyard with the ability to build up to three 328-ft-plus vessels each year. Phase One of the new $88m facility boasts 35,000m2 of manufacturing space under one roof, including a 7900m2 warehouse, as well as paved parking for more than 2000 vehicles. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of Phase One was held at Austal’s Mobile, Ala. shipyard. The event was attended by more than 300 dignitaries, including Alabama Governor Bob Riley, U.S.

New Navy Contracts

General Dynamics, Electric Boat Corp., Groton, Conn., is being awarded a $42,108,043 firm-fixed-price contract for preparation and accomplishment of the FY09 dry-docking selected restricted availability of USS Springfield (SSN 761). The contractor will perform advance planning, design documentation, engineering, procurement, ship-checks, fabrication and preliminary shipyard work and/or any other work necessary to prepare for the accomplishment of, as well as accomplish all the necessary alterations, repairs, maintenance, modernization, testing and routine work required to return the mission ready submarine to the fleet. Work will be performed in Groton, Conn., and is expected to be completed by February 2010.

Navy Orders Material for More Austal JHSVs

The U.S. Navy has exercised contract options funding Austal’s acquisition of long lead-time material associated with the construction of two additional 338 ft Joint High Speed Vessels (JHSV). The award is valued at $99.5m. Austal was awarded the initial contract to design and build the first 338 ft JHSV in November 2008. The contract included options for a further nine additional vessels to be awarded between FY09 and FY13 for a total value of up to $1.6b. Long lead-time material for the additional vessels will include diesel engines, water jets and reduction gears. Similar to the Austal-built WestPac Express operated by the U.S. Marines for the past seven years…

Austal JHSV Initial Critical Design Review

On April 28, 2009, Austal completed the Initial Critical Design Review (ICDR) in its contract with the U.S. Navy for the Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV). During the ICDR, the Austal team provided a comprehensive summary of the critical areas of the JHSV design for Navy approval to proceed to Final Critical Design Review, the next critical milestone. In November 2008, Austal was awarded the contract to design and build the US Department of Defense’s next generation multi-use platform, the Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV). As prime contractor, Austal will design and construct the lead 103-meter JHSV, with options for nine additional vessels expected to be exercised between FY09 and FY13.

Stimulus Funding for Port of Pittsburgh

“Fantastic”, was the response that James R. McCarville, Executive Director of the Port of Pittsburgh Commission, had to the announcement that the US Army Corps of Engineers planned to spend over $110m in Stimulus funding for navigation in southwestern Pa. Specifically, the $84m scheduled for Charleroi Lock in the Lower Mon 2-3-4 project, rescues a billion dollar project that otherwise might have had to go on to life support/shutdown. Those funds will be used to complete the construction of the river wall, and construct a new Upper Guard Wall and a new Lower Guard Wall to safely guide vessels in and out of the chamber. No Stimulus Funds for New Soo Lock

The Great Lakes Maritime Task Force (GLMTF) has expressed its disappointment that the second Poe-sized lock at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan did not receive any Federal stimulus dollars. GLMTF stated that Congress has strongly supported the project, authorizing the lock at full Federal expense in 2007, and approving tens of millions of dollars in Federal construction funding, including $17 million recently in the FY09 Appropriations Bill. “It is incomprehensible that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers did not include the new Soo lock in projects that will be funded from its share of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA),” said Donald Cree, President of Great Lakes Maritime Task Force, the largest coalition promoting waterborne commerce on the Great Lakes.

New Navy Contract

Lockheed Martin Corp., – Maritime Systems & Sensors, Baltimore, Md., is being awarded a contract for LCS FY09 Flight 0+ ship construction, class design services, configuration management services, additional crew and shore support, special studies and post delivery support. As this award represents Phase I of a competitive two-phased acquisition approach to procure FY09/FY10 LCS, with Phase II including potential award of up to three additional LCS Flight 0+ Class ships, the award amount is considered source selection information (see FAR 2.101 and 3.104) and will not be made public at this time. LCS Class ships are networked, agile, and high-speed surface combatants with versatile warfighting capabilities optimized for littoral missions.

Great Lakes Maritime Task Force Report

Thanks to a significant increase in funding for dredging on the Great Lakes in FY08, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was finally able to start reducing the backlog of sediment that is clogging the Great Lakes Navigation System announced Great Lakes Maritime Task Force in its 2008 Annual Report released March 20. “Congress really stepped up to the plate and gave the Corps nearly $140m to dredge Great Lakes ports and waterways in FY08. The outlook for FY09 initially was not as positive. The Bush Administration’s final budget proposed to slash the Lakes’ dredging appropriation by nearly $50m. “Thanks to the Great Lakes delegation, the omnibus bill did bring the Lakes’ dredging appropriation back up to $125m, an increase of $35m over what the Bush Administration had proposed.

New Navy Contract

BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair, Norfolk, Va., is being awarded a $9,741,012 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-05-C-4403) for growth and new work items in support of the USS Kearsarge (LHD-3) FY09 docked phased maintenance availability. The following work items will be accomplished: preserve the feed water tank; replace collection, holding and transfer, and soil drain piping; preserve freeboard; and accomplish growth work for the impressed cathodic protection system, ShipAlt LHD1-6 SCD 3263 fuel oil compensation stability improvement mods, sea valve sectional protection waster sleeve and underwater hull sea chest, cleaning and pumping, underwater hull inspection, and underwater hull preservation.

New Naval Contract

BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair, Norfolk, Va., is being awarded a $12,755,479 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-05-C-4404) to exercise an option for alterations and repairs for the USS Cole (DDG-67) FY09 docking selected restricted availability. The major alterations and repairs for the USS Cole include: repairs to underwater hull; repairs to propeller shafts and struts; repair to sonar dome; and bow-strengthening alteration. Work will be performed in Norfolk, Va., and is expected to be completed by Jun. 2009. Contract funds in the amount of $12,755,479 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center, Norfolk, Va., is the contracting activity.
