Grand Bahama Shipyard Reports Commercial Success
Caribbean shipyard Grand Bahama Shipyard (GBS) said it has completed work on 30 commercial vessels within first half of 2017, predominantly comprised of companies returning to the yard with repeat business including tankers, bulk carriers, containerships, tugs, dive support vessels and drilling support vessels. In what is considered a volatile market, GBS said 2017 has been a great year for repeat customers, solidifying its position as a supporter of the major U.S. East Coast…
Electric Motors for Marine Applications
Empire Magnetics President Richard Halstead discusses the critical considerations necessary for engines operating in Arctic waters. A large number of vessels sail in more than one ocean, from warmer seas to arctic waters, so motors for marine applications must be versatile enough to operate in a variety of conditions. While the greater majority of my experience involves building motors for use in fin controls on mini submarines, robot arms on deep sea remotely operated vehicles (ROVs)…
Tideland Warning Systems for Golden Eagle Platforms
Tideland Signal supplied a package of Syncrolan LED light stations and fog signals for the Golden Eagle Area development in the U.K. sector of the North Sea, about 43 miles (69 kilometers) from Aberdeen. Tideland's warning systems will protect both Golden Eagle's wellhead platform and the combined production, utilities and accommodation platform, which is bridge-linked to the wellhead. Tideland's latest LED warning system installed on the two Golden Eagle platforms comprises a main Syncrolan light station with a range of 15 NM…
Liles Heads Structurmarine Timber Dock Division
David Liles was appointed U.S. sales director for the new division, bringing more than 30 years of marina experience in the timber dock market. Structurmarine recently announced its newest product line, Timber Dock Systems, geared to marina and harbor owners and operators. Timber Dock Systems use materials and hardware specifically selected to withstand a location's unique marine conditions, including saltwater installations. The heavy lateral laminated beams are sized and tailored for each site.
Dogger Bank Site for Innovation with Another First
The Dogger Bank offshore wind zone is proving to be a site for innovation as a new and safer installation technique has been used to lift Forewind’s initial meteorological mast tower on top of the innovative suction-installed bucket foundation. The use of the Bucket Foundation was also a UK industry first when placed on site in February. Fred. Olsen United implemented the concept of moving the riggers, who previously had to be near the lattice towers during installation, and instead introducing guide cones, therefore eliminating the risk of a swinging or falling load causing an accident.
GAC Maritime Security to Provide PirateFence
GAC Maritime Security has entered into a strategic partnership with Mobile Defense Systems LLC to provide PirateFence anti-grapple razor wire to protect vessels from attacks by sea criminals. This marks the latest addition to GAC Maritime Security's expanding portfolio of protective solutions for vessel owners and operators seeking to put in place a non-lethal, multi-layered risk mitigation system. PirateFence is a modular-based perimeter protection system with an innovative anti-climb and grapple-resistant component.
Breakwater's Effectiveness Proved by Research Institute
Experts are professionals who are curious and never stop learning. To better understand how breakwaters function and to perfect their products, SF Marina's team collaborates with professional research institutes throughout the world. Recent testing of their new SF Type 600 floating breakwater confirmed the predicted wave attenuation was correct. "Nothing is straightforward about the physics of waves," said SF Marina CEO Lars Gunnar Odhe. "Through research and extensive testing…
DSC, Port of New Orleans Recognized
DSC and its customer, the Port of New Orleans, were recently recognized in the 2011 Hot-Dip Galvanizing Excellence Awards for use of galvanized steel throughout the dredge design. The Dredge Edward S. “Ned” Reed was awarded in the water and marine category of the annual competition, representing the finest achievements in the use of hot-dip galvanizing. For each award, all parties involved in the project are recognized winners, as the nature of galvanizing is collaborative, and the final project reflects the work of many.

New PVC-Free Alternatives for Interior Decoration
SSAB Laminated Steel AB now presents two types of PVC-free alternatives, called Dobel 2000 and Dobel 2005. Dobel 2000 is steel sheet, painted with a thin layer of Polyester paint laminated with a printed polyester film and thus both light and PVC-free. While being competitive in price and, at the same time, twice as thick as comparable coatings, it gives, on the other hand, a limited range of varieties in appearance and is, in first place, suitable for large areas since the minimum quantity for this product is rather high. Also to bear in mind is the fact that a painted surface cannot be repaired. Just launched at SMM 2004 in Hamburg is the new Dobel 2005.
Suda’s Jacob Liftboats to Aid Gulf Clean-up
The Jacob, a $17.8m boat designed by Metairie-based A.K. Suda Inc. for CS Liftboats, recently launched in the Gulf of Mexico on July 14. According to the New Orleans Business Center, the move helps alleviate a five- to six-boat demand for post-Katrina cleanup. Liftboats are considered the transport trucks of the offshore oil industry. Industry analysts predicted a backlog of months for liftboats after Hurricane Katrina. Insurers paid out more than $8b in claims for storm damage in the Gulf of Mexico, and demand is rampant for liftboats to handle cleanup and repairs. Most liftboats use only a portion of possible leg length because a crane is attached to the legs. Suda’s team placed the 200-ton crane on the liftboat’s deck. Engineers shaved roughly 15 ft.
Hyde Marine Oil/Water Separator
The Hyde Marine Separator uses a proven method for gravity separation of oil from bilge water to less than 15 ppm. The separator exceeds all performance requirements of USCG 46CFR 162.050 and IMO Resolution MEPC.60(33) and is certified by the USCG and the British Department of Transport. The standard separator is constructed of high-quality, carbon steel and coated with marine epoxy for corrosion protection. All separator piping connections are galvanized steel or high strength PVC. The basic system consists of the oil/water separator, supply pump/motor assembly and controls. Optional items include bilge level switches, clean water discharge pump, USCG certified oil content monitor, three-way diverter valve, or other customer-specified controls and alarms.
