WSS Receives Approvals for Safety Service

Class approvals and new training centres strengthen WSS safety service offering. Wilhelmsen Ships Service (WSS) has received vital approvals for its safety service from two of the world’s Classification Societies: Germanischer Lloyd (GL) and RINA (Royal Institute of Naval Architects). Mats Hestman, WSS International Service Manager Safety said: “WSS is the first maritime safety service provider to receive global GL approval, and we are extremely proud to have been approved by both GL and RINA. Stricter requirements from Class Societies have lead to the need for more audits, so this is a major achievement for us. This also means that we can continue to explore new and exciting possibilities within safety services.

MARAD $14.7M in Grants for Small Shipyards

On April 15, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced $14.7m in grant awards to help improve 17 small shipyards in 16 states. The funds will help these shipyards become more competitive by purchasing modern equipment and training workers. “These grants will help modernize small shipyards and strengthen our economy by making sure we maintain the ability to build and repair ships in the United States,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “Small shipyards are an important part of our nation’s shipbuilding industry,” said David Matsuda, Acting Maritime Administrator.
