MAN to Supply Propulsion for World’s Largest Car Carriers

Chinese shipyard Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI) has received an order for four MAN B&W 8S60ME-GI engines in connection with the building of four 10,800 CEU pure car and truck carriers (PCTC) for South Korean shipping owner, HMM Co. Ltd.CSIC Diesel Engine Co. SK Shipping Selects 5X72DF for LNG Carriers

Securing the position of its low-speed low-pressure X‑DF engines as market leaders, Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) has been selected to supply two 5-cylinder X72DF (5X72DF) engines for each of a pair of 180,000 m3 LNG carriers ordered by South Korean shipowner SK Shipping Co., Ltd (SK). The shipbuilding contract was signed in May 2016. The twin-skeg LNG carriers will be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and the engines by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd / Engine & Machinery Division (HHI-EMD). They will be fitted with a GTT Mark III Flex membrane cargo containment system. In addition, the ships will feature HHI’s Hi-SGAS system combining fuel system supply for the two 5X72DF engines with the Hi‑SGAS system that can re-liquefy 100 % of the boil off gas (BOG) from the cargo.

Bestobell Secures Valves Contract with DSME

Bestobell Marine has recently secured its first order to supply its brand new range of cryogenic high pressure Globe valves to DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co Ltd) in South Korea. The innovative new valves have been developed over the past two years, in conjunction with DSME, to meet the exacting standards required for the valves in the new fuel gas systems, which includes withstanding extremely high pressures. The valves are designed to stand a maximum pressure of 370 Bar and will be fitted in the gas phase piping of the fuel gas system.

First Two Stroke Gas Engines for LNG Carriers

Teekay LNG Partners has ordered two 173,400m3 LNG carriers from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in Korea. The vessels will each have two MAN Diesel & Turbo ME-GI dual-fuel, ultra long two-stroke gas injection engines. These engines received DNV type approval in 2010 and their use as part of an innovative propulsion package is claimed to give significant fuel savings when compared to propulsion commonly used for LNG carriers today. DNV experience from risk assessments of LNG-fuelled ships shows that a gas-fuelled main engine has the same risk level as a diesel-fuelled main engine.
