GTT Awarded AIPs for Cargo Transfers Between VLECs

GTT, the technological expert in membrane containment systems used to transport and store liquefied gases, has obtained two new approvals in principle (AIP) from the classification societies ABS and Lloyd's Register for cargo transfer operations between very large ethane carriers (VLEC) equipped with the Mark III technology developed by GTT.These approvals confirm the relevance of GTT's containment systems on board VLECs, with tanks of up to 105,000 m3, as a safe and cost-effective solution for the transfer of liquefied ethane…

Largest Chinese-built FSRU Delivered

PaxOcean’s Zhoushan Shipyard has delivered a 26,000m3 floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) Karunia Dewata to Indonesia-based Jaya Samudra Karunia (JSK). The FSRU is the largest to be built in China and will be capable of regasifying around 50 million standard cubic feet per day.The project marks a milestone for China's growing gas shipping industry and will help increase the development of Indonesia’s gas supply chain, where the unit will be based. The unit is also the first FSRU that PaxOcean has built.

The world's first very large ethane carrier (VLEC), Ethane Crystal, has been delivered to India’s Reliance Industries Ltd. by South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), representing a significant milestone for the gas shipping industry. The vessel is now the planet’s largest, purpose-built ethane carrier – comparable in size to today’s very large gas carriers (VLGC) – and with its 87,000 cbm cargo carrying capacity, represents a significant step up from the largest ethane carriers delivered to date: the 37,000 cbm Navigator Aurora and Navigator Eclipse.

BP Shipping Marks its 100th Year

BP Shipping today celebrates its 100-year anniversary, making it the longest continually operating company in the BP group. Formed on April 30, 1915 as the British Tanker Company, the business has adapted to significant world events including two world wars, the Great Depression, closures of the Suez Canal, and the impact of oil nationalisations on the world economy and the movement of oil and gas. BP Shipping has also played its role in the evolution of safer and more environmentally sustainable shipping practices including inert gas systems, crude oil washing and double hulling, and has used its marine skills in the design and development of ground-breaking hybrid vessels in support of offshore oil and gas exploration.

Interview: Nakilat's Samir Bailouni

The Society for Gas and Marine Fuel (SGMF) recently interviewed one of its members, Samir Bailouni of Nakilat (Qatar Gas Transport Co.). Bailouni weights in on Nakilat, LNG, the gas industry, and SGMF membership. Who are you, and what do you do? Services you provide? Products you offer? Nakilat is a Qatari company that ships LNG from Qatar mega projects to the world. Nakilat owns into 61 LNG vessels. We own 100% of 25 of our vessels, (all 14 QMax and 11 QFlex) and the others are 43% owned on aggregate. We also co-own four VLGCs.

Classification Leaders Weigh in on Marine Propulsion

When talk turns to marine propulsion and the host of surrounding topics – emissions, efficiency, fuel consumption – we turn to class for answers. While there are just two questions, the ensuing answers from leaders at ABS, BV, ClassNK, DNV GL, LR and RINA are voluminous & enlightening. The stricter environmental regulations and rising fuel costs lead to technology development in design, size, propulsion and operations. This goes well beyond LNG as fuel, and we believe we will see a more diversified mix, with batteries, hybrids, methanol and so on.

New LNG Bunker Fuel Technical & Safety NGO Formed

The Society For Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) is launched as new Non-Governmental Organisation to enhance safety and best practices in the use of LNG as a ship fuel. Following a decision to proceed by the Board of Directors of the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO) at its spring meeting in Houston, the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) is to be established as a new non-governmental organisation (NGO). “The use of LNG as a marine fuel presents a major challenge for the shipping industry over the coming years,” states Luc Gillet, SIGTTO President. “I am pleased that SIGTTO is playing a leading role in the launch of this new NGO.

Greenwood Joins Cortland/Puget Sound Rope

Puget Sound Rope announce that Michael Greenwood has joined Cortland/Puget Sound Rope as Technical Sales Manager. He has more than 34 years in the rope industry, beginning with the family rope company, Tubbs Cordage Company of San Francisco in 1976. For the last 24 years he has been in sales and sales management with Samson Rope Technologies. Greenwood’s past positions included, Western Regional Sales Manager, National Sales Manager, Director of Sales Commercial Marine and finally Director of New Product Development.
