Inert Gas Production for Alfa Laval Training Center

An Alfa Laval Smit Combustion system (FU type) is now installed at the Alfa Laval Test & Training Center in Aalborg, Denmark. The system, which adds inert gas production to the center’s already comprehensive range of full-scale vessel applications, will ensure that Alfa Laval remains at the forefront of developing and optimizing inert gas systems.Inaugurated in 2014, the Alfa Laval Test & Training Center is essentially a full-sized machine room on land, with equipment from all of Alfa Laval’s marine product groups installed in process lines as they would be on a commercial vessel.

Wärtsilä, GTT Partner on LNG Solutions

Wärtsilä and GTT finalized a cooperation agreement at the Marintec conference and exhibition in Shanghai, China on December 5. The aim of the cooperation is to explore potential business opportunities in the marine sector in relation to liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage, fuel gas supply systems and associated services that will benefit both shipyards and vessel owners. Wärtsilä has experience and in-house expertise in LNG fuel gas applications, as well as gas carrier process know-how, while GTT has capabilities in developing cryogenic membrane containment solutions. By collaborating in the delivery of jointly agreed projects, the two companies will be able to propose solutions that optimize onboard LNG fuel gas storage and operations.

New ABS Guide Advances Industry FSRU Development

ABS, a leading provider of classification and technical services to the marine and offshore industries, has published the ABS Guide for Building and Classing LNG Regasification Vessels, outlining guidance for classing LNG regasification vessels. “ABS has developed this industry-leading guidance based on extensive experience with the classification of LNG carriers,” says ABS Chairman, President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki. Floating LNG regasification uses specialized ships, commonly referred to as LNG regasification vessels or Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRU), which offer a flexible and efficient way to deliver LNG to new and expanding markets.

ABS Published FSRU Development Guidance

This Guide covers both purpose-built LNG regasification vessels and existing LNG carriers that are converted to operate with regasification plants onboard.

Wärtsilä' Inert Gas Solution for LNG Carriers

Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) in South Korea has contracted Wärtsilä to supply combined inert gas generators and gas combustion units for 17 new LNG Carrier vessels under construction at the company's yards. The vessels are being built for leading operators in Singapore, Greece, South Korea, Cyprus and Canada. These significant contracts with Wärtsilä were signed in June and September. These will be the first ever units delivered by Wärtsilä that combine inert gas generators (IGG) and gas combustion units (GCU) with high capacity. The systems have a maximum volume of up to 3800 kg/h, which is sufficient for the industry's largest LNG carriers. The concept of combining the two systems was developed by Wärtsilä in close cooperation with DSME.

Rolls-Royce Gas Engines for FLNG Power Generation

Rolls-Royce has secured a contract with Keppel Shipyard in Singapore to supply two all-gas engines for power generation on-board a Floating Liquefaction Vessel (FLNGV) owned by Golar LNG Ltd. The vessel Hilli was a former LNG carrier and is being converted to a FLNGV carrier. Bergen B35:40V20AG is a compact and powerful gas engine with  environmental performance in terms of low emissions of NOx, CO2, SOx and particulates. The energy consumption is also low, helping Rolls-Royce to win the bid by offering a more efficient all-gas solution compared to dual-fuel options.

Rolls-Royce to Power New Cruise Ferries

Rolls-Royce signed a contract with ship owner Fjord Line A/S to install LNG based power and propulsion systems in two cruise ferries being built at the Bergen Group Fosen AS yard in Norway. Each vessel will be equipped with four gas engines, powering a highly efficient Promas integrated rudder and propeller propulsion system. The gas-only fuelled engines will reduce Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions by about 90 percent while Sulphur Oxide (SOx) and particulates emissions will be negligible.
