China Ready to Resume Oil & Gas and Maritime Talks with the Philippines
China is ready to resume oil and gas talks and manage maritime issues "cordially" with the Philippines, China President Xi Jinping said on Wednesday, according to Chinese state television.Xi was speaking to his Philippines counterpart Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who was on a three-day visit to Beijing.Beijing's territorial claims in the South China Sea, which is rich in oil, gas, and fish and where about $3 trillion in ship-borne trade passes annually, had been a source of tension between it and some Southeast Asian countries, including the Philippines.
EU Says No Deal Yet in Ukraine-Russia Gas Talks
The European Commission cancelled a news conference planned to follow talks between Russia and Ukraine on gas supplies on Wednesday, saying negotiations in Brussels were continuing late into the evening. All three parties had been hoping to conclude a deal on resuming Russian natural gas supplies to Ukraine over the winter but differences over payments have been hampering their efforts to reach agreement. Gazprom Sinks on China Blow, But Russian Stocks Rally
Russian stock indexes continued to rally on Tuesday, boosted by expectations that Russia will not intervene in Ukraine's political crisis while shrugging off negative news on the progress of gas talks between Russia and China. The latter, however, hit Russia's leading gas producer Gazprom, which fell 1.8 percent, bucking the generally positive market trend. The rouble-denominated MICEX index was up 0.8 percent by the close at 1,425.6 points, while the dollar-based RTS index had risen 0.7 percent to 1,298.6 points.
