GE to Provide MTU with LM2500 Gas Turbine

GE Marine reports that it will provide MTU Friedrichshafen, Friedrichshafen, Germany, with one LM2500 gas turbine for the German Navy’s fourth Baden-Württemberg-class (F125) frigate. For each new F125 frigate, MTU will provide the German Navy with one LM2500 gas turbine, two electric motors and four diesel generator-sets in combined diesel-electric and gas turbine propulsion arrangement. The keel for the first F125 frigate was laid in November 2011 at the Blohm +Voss shipyard in Hamburg.

Following extensive dock trials, Royal Caribbean's 88,000-gt Radiance of the Seas departed the covered building dock at Meyer Werft's Papenburg shipyard. The vessel was then towed to the fitting-out quay for further completion of the interior, precedent to its sea trials, which are scheduled for January. The first of a four-part vessel series built by Meyer Werft for RCCL, Radiance of the Seas measures 962 ft. (293.2 m) with a breadth of 106 ft. (32.2 m). With its top service speed of more than 24 knots, the vessel can accommodate up to 2,500 passengers in 1,050 cabins; 850 crewmembers. Propelled via two 20 MW azipods, the vessel is the first of its kind to house a combination gas and steam turbine power package. The vessel is scheduled for a spring 2001 delivery.

GE Celebrates Cruise Milestone

GE Marine Engines' LM aeroderivative gas turbines made a splash in the cruise industry in 2002. As this year comes to an end, several milestones including sea trials, maiden voyages and equipment deliveries are occurring. "GE continuously demonstrates to the cruise industry the reliability and ease of operation our LM gas turbines provide," said Karl Matson, general manager of GE Marine Engines. "In addition, the environmentally friendly features inherent in our gas turbine design have set a new propulsion system standard for cruise ship owners and operators, helping to make each project unique," Matson stated.
