GE to Build Plant for Batteries
The new battery business will be a part of GE Transportation and will serve customers in the rail, marine, mining, telecommunications and utility sectors. GE has invested more than $150m to develop advanced battery technologies, including a high energy-density sodium-based chemistry battery that will provide energy storage for a variety applications, including GE Transportation’s ecomaginationSM certified Evolution Hybrid Locomotive, mining truck drive system and tugboat electrification. In addition, GE has launch customers in several industries, including mining, telecommunications and utility, with key applications for heavy service vehicles, backup storage and load leveling for the smart grid.

26 GE Diesels to Power Panama Canal Tugboats
GE Transportation will supply Marinsa, Panama, with 26 V228 diesel engines. The 12-cylinder engines will power 13 new tugboats to be used in the Panama Canal in Panama. “This is a significant order for GE, the largest we’ve received to date in Latin America. We faced stiff competition in the marketplace and are delighted that ultimately our V228 engines were selected for this project,” said John Manison, manager of GE Transportation’s marine and stationary power business, Erie, Pennsylvania. Marinsa is GE’s authorized distributor in Latin America.
GE Receives BV Certification
GE Transportation’s marine business has received type approval certification from Bureau Veritas (BV), Paris, France, for its family of Electronic Fuel Injected (EFI), medium-speed diesel engines. “The BV type approval certifies that our 8, 12 and 16 cylinder engines are manufactured with high quality at GE’s Grove City, Pennsylvania facility,” said John Manison, manager of GE Transportation’s marine business in Erie, Pa. “Over the past several years, we have earned BV, American Bureau of Shipping and Germanischer Lloyd type approvals for our diesel engine family. Couple these quality certifications with many cost-saving features such as electronic fuel injection, and customers are offered significant benefits when using our engines,” Manison added.
GE to Supply Korean Destroyer
GE Transportation’s marine gas turbine operations will supply Samsung Techwin Co. Ltd., Seoul, Korea with 12 LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbines. The Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy will use the gas turbines for its next-generation KDX Type III destroyer. “We are very pleased that the Republic of Korea Navy has extended its vote of confidence in the GE family and the LM2500 gas turbine system for the KDX-III program,” said Karl Matson, general manger of GE Transportation’s marine operations, Evendale, Ohio. Hyundai or Daewoo Shipyards in Korea are building a total of three KDX Type III destroyers, each of which weigh more than 7,000 tons. The vessels will be equipped with AEGIS combat systems.

GE Gets USN Certification for LM2500+
GE Transportation's marine business received United States Navy certification for its LM2500+ aeroderivative gas turbine. The LM2500+ has been certified by the U.S. Navy for 35,000 brake horsepower (bhp) for mechanical drive applications. The LM2500+ received the certification for use powering the U.S. Navy's eighth LHD and follow-on ships in the WASP (LHD 1) class of large-deck, multipurpose amphibious assault ships. GE Aeroderivative Marine Gas Turbines Log more than 320,000 Service Hours
GE announced that its fleet of 25 aeroderivative marine gas turbines has accumulated more than 320,000 hours operating aboard 16 cruise ships. GE remains the only gas turbine manufacturer to have its engines in service on cruise ships, the company reported today at the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention. "We are setting a new reliability standard in the cruise industry for propulsion and onboard power," said Karl Matson, general manager of GE Transportation's marine business, Evendale, Ohio. GE Power for Tuna Clipper
GE Transportation delivered a GE 16-cylinder 7FDM diesel engine for installation aboard the Cap. Berny B tuna clipper. The vessel, owned by Berni Buehs and Sons, Manta, Ecuador, is being repowered from a dual-engine propulsion system to a single GE medium-speed diesel engine. “This is a milestone project because it marks the initial application of a GE diesel engine for a tuna boat,” said John Manison, manager of GE Transportation’s marine and stationary power business. The 16-cylinder engine provides 4,100 hp and features an Electronic Fuel Injection system, driven by GE’s Powerstar Controller. Cap. Berny B is a 1,200-ton, 210-feet long vessel that was built in Spain by Luzuriaga in 1981. Repowering of the Capt. Berny B will begin in July 2005, and the vessel will operate out of Manta.
LM6000 Gas Turbine Passes Test
GE Transportation announced that an LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbine recently completed the 500-hour power generation phase of endurance testing towards American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) certification. GE is seeking ABS certification to the Steel Vessel and the new Naval Vessel Rules for its LM6000. GE plans to certify the LM6000 at a power level greater than 36 megawatts based on United States Navy standard day conditions (100oF). The 500-hour mechanical drive portion of testing will follow shortly, with GE on schedule to receive ABS certification in 2006. The LM6000 being used in the ABS qualification test is a standard production LM6000PC liquid fuel engine, with no modifications required to meet ABS Naval Vessel Rules requirements.
GE & Partners Commission New Tugboat Fleet for Panama Canal
GE Marine, a unit of GE Transportation, and the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced the start of the commissioning of 13 tugboats for use in the Panama Canal. The 26-engine order represents the largest in the history of GE Marine. The sale of the 12-cylinder V228 engines through GE's engine distributor Marinsa was finalized in October 2008. The vessels are being built by Cheoy Lee Shipyards of Hong Kong, the first of which arrived in Panama last week; all of the ships are scheduled to arrive by June 2012. In October, ACP celebrated the transit of the one millionth vessel through the Canal since its inauguration in 1914, and the new tugboats will be used to continue to transport tankers and barges through the Canal safely and efficiently.
GE Receives EPA Tier II Compliance Certification
GE Transportation announces that it has received United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier II emissions compliance certification for its V228 diesel engine family. In order for the EPA to grant Tier II compliance certification, GE submitted results from emissions testing conducted on its 8, 12 and 16 cylinder V228 engines at its Erie, Pa., facility. GE’s V228 family includes the 8V228, 12V228 and 16V228 engine configurations, for power ranges from 1,400 horsepower (hp)/1,004 kilowatts (kW) to 4,500 hp/3,355 kW. These four-stroke, turbo-charged and after-cooled medium-speed diesels are designed for the most demanding applications.

GE Diesel Engines for Pesquera Diamante
GE Transportation, in conjunction with its distributor Marinsa Peru, S.A., will supply Pesquera Diamante S.A., in Peru, with 7FDM medium-speed diesel engines. The engines will be used to power newly constructed boats and to repower Pesquera Diamante's entire fleet of purseine net fishing boats. GE will deliver 8-cylinder units rated at 1,400 brake horsepower (bhp) and 12-cylinder models rated at 2,000 bhp. New vessel construction and repowering of the Pesquera Diamante fleet has already begun, and will continue over a four-year period. All the diesel engines will be manufactured at GE's Grove City, Pa., facility. Several of the engines for Pesquera Diamante will be shipped in 2005, while the remainder will be delivered over the next four years.
GE Marine, Ingeteam Marine Partnership
GE Marine, a unit of GE Transportation, signed a business cooperation agreement with the Marine division of Ingeteam, a company headquartered in Spain that specializes in electronic control system automation and application engineering in the marine, industry, railway traction and renewable energy fields. The agreement will include joint marketing, sales efforts and technology development in the marine space for a variety of vessels. The partnership will enable both companies to offer customers integrated marine propulsion systems by bringing together GE Marine’s world class medium-speed diesel engines and Ingeteam Marine’s power and propulsion systems and vessel automation, all of which range in power from 1045 kW to 4240 kW.
GE to Supply IHI with LM2500 Gas Turbines
GE Transportation's marine gas turbine business announced it will supply Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, Co. Ltd. (IHI) with four GE LM2500 aeroderivative gas turbines. The engines will power the first of a new class of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's (JMSDF) helicopter-carrying destroyers. The first vessel will be know as the 16DDH, and it is anticipated that at least one additional DDH destroyer will be built in the coming years. The 13,500-ton DDH destroyer will use two propulsion trains, each consisting of two LM2500s in a COmbined Gas turbine And Gas turbine configuration (COGAG), driving a propeller through a gearbox. The engines will each provide 25,000 shaft horsepower.
GE to Provide Diesel Engines for PSVs
GE Transportation’s marine business announced it will supply IML Motori S.p.A., Lomagna, Italy, with four medium-speed diesel engines. GE reported today at the SMM Conference that the engines will be used to power two UT755 L-type platform supply vessels being built by Rossetti Marino, Ravenna, Italy. Over the past several years, GE has dedicated significant resources to greatly expand its distribution worldwide network. Currently 34 authorized service and distribution centers are located in North America, Europe, Asia, South America and the Middle East. These partnerships offer customers easy and timely access to GE parts and service capabilities.

GE Transportation Systems, Marine & Stationary Power (M&SP), is making a strong push to capture medium-speed diesel engine business in the maritime sector, fortifying an international network of service centers and bringing its product to center stage at many of the Autumn 2003 trade exhibition. GE Transportation Systems has is the market leader in the locomotive business, with 85 percent of its annual production targeted to this business. While marine business has not accounted for a large percent of its overall business to date, its medium-speed diesel engine capability is considerable. In the rail business, no one looks at the engine for 90 days, whereas in the marine and stationary sectors, the engines are pampered, said Tina Donikowski, General Manager Propulsion & Specialty Services.
GE Provides Gas Turbines in Korea
GE Transportation is a long-standing equipment supplier to navies in the Asia/Pacific region, such as the Republic of Korea (ROK), Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, People’s Republic of China, India and Indonesia. In fact, 29 navies throughout the world have selected GE’s proven LM aeroderivative gas turbines. In the Asia/Pacific region alone, nine navies use 200 LM gas turbines, primarily for naval marine applications. Currently there are more than 1,200 GE LM2500 gas turbines in marine service worldwide. The engine is rated at 33,600 shp with a thermal efficiency of 37% at ISO conditions. The LM2500 has an outstanding 99.6% availability rate: out of every 10,000 hours of service, engines have required an average of only 40 hours of corrective maintenance.
