Royal Caribbean Wins Marine Environment Protection Award
At the North American Marine Environment Protection Association’s annual Awards dinner, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. (which includes Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises), the world’s second largest cruise company, was the recipient of NAMEPA’s 2011 Marine Environment Protection Award. NAMEPA Present Award to U.S. Coast Guard
September 21, 2009 Clay Maitland, Founding Chairman of the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), announced that the United States Coast Guard is the recipient of NAMEPA’s 2009 Marine Environment Protection Award. NAMMA and NAMEPA to Host World Maritime Day Observance in NY
Organized by the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) and the North American Maritime Ministry Association (NAMMA), World Maritime Day Observance will be held in on October 23th at the Union League Club. This event will be the third World Maritime Day Observance held in the United States, which will be hosting the parallel World Maritime Day event in 2009. This year’s theme is “IMO: 60 years in the service of shipping”, which follows previous years’ focus on environmental issues. NAMEPA joins the North American Maritime Ministry Association in hosting the event which commences with a worship service at Church of our Saviour on , followed by a luncheon presentation of NAMMA’s annual Seafarer Salute and Joe Gerson Humanitarian Awards at the Union League Club.
HHI: To Infinity & Beyond
Thirty years ago when Greek shipowner George Livanos met with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) founder Chung Ju Yung met on a sandy beach on the tip of the Korean peninsula where the new HHI shipyard would stand, little did they know that 30 years later, HHI would have delivered 1,000 ships of 75 mdwt to 188 shipowners in 42 countries. HHI is celebrating its 30th anniversary in a manner most any other commercial shipbuilder would enjoy, with the delivery of its 1,000th vessel, or the equivalent of 77.5 million dwt. Rival shipyards and political organizations in Europe, the U.S. and Japan often question the manner in which HHI and its shipbuilding colleagues in South Korea garner such large market share, with the dreaded word “subsidies” used with great earnest.
