193 Ships Broken in 2Q, 2019

The NGO Shipbreaking Platform said that there were a total of 193 ships broken in the second quarter of 2019 and the 146 of these were sold to South Asian scrapping beaches. South Asian working conditions are known to be dire and breaking practices cause irreparable damage to the coastal environment, it added.Between April and June, Platform sources recorded three accidents that killed at least five workers on the beach of Chittagong, Bangladesh, bringing the total death-toll of the shipbreaking industry this year to at least eight workers.In the early morning of 15 May, a loud blast shook the Chittagong shipbreaking area. DNV GL Acquires Marine Cybernetics

DNV GL, a ship and offshore classification society and technical risk service providers, has acquired Marine Cybernetics, a company for third-party testing of computer control systems. The acquisition expands DNV GL’s scope of services in the offshore and maritime industries. Marine Cybernetics was established in 2002 as a spin-off from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Based in Trondheim, Norway, the company introduced the concept of Hardware-In-the Loop-Testing (HIL) to the maritime and offshore industries.

Henning Nordgulen has been appointed Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of shipbuilders & offshore service providers Bergen Group ASA. Bergen CEO Asle Solheim said he was very pleased that Nordgulen had accepted the engagement: “Mr. Nordgulen has a comprehensive background from leading positions in finance, shipping and industry. Henning Nordgulen (48) has for the last seven years been Director of the corporate division and a member of the corporate management team in Sparebanken Vest.

Globe Wireless, a  provider of communications, operational and IT solutions to the maritime industry, has announced Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Skipsrederi AS has selected the Dual Globe iFusion system as the communication solution for both SKS Tankers Holding AS and KGJS Cement Holding AS. The Dual Globe iFusion  solution provides full featured redundancy and reliability for vessels. The dual terminal FleetBroadband configuration allows one Globe iFusion  terminal to act as the primary communication system with the secondary Globe iFusion  terminal acting as a backup.

Rolls-Royce $17.5m Marine Systems Deal

Rolls-Royce, a provider of marine systems, has won a $17.5m order to supply fuel-efficient maneuverability systems for four new cement carrying vessels. The vessels, due for delivery in 2011 and 2012, are the latest generation of this type of ship. The four 16,800 dwt vessels will be operated by the Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Group (KGJS). The order includes the Promas integrated propeller and rudder system, steering gear, tunnel thrusters and deck machinery. The system also includes switchboards, automation systems and an integrated bridge. The Promas can increase propulsive efficiency by four to six percent with improved maneuverability at high and low speeds. The vessels are being built at the Vinashin Group’s Ben Kien shipyard in Hai Phong, Vietnam.

Odfjell Expands in Brazil

In 1999 Odfjell entered into a 50% ownership in Flumar Transportes de Quimicos e Gases Ltda (Flumar) in Brazil. Flumar, headquartered in Sao Paulo, is a 50/50 joint-venture between Odfjell SE and Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Skibsrederi (KGJS), both in Bergen, Norway. KGJS and Odfjell have entered into an agreement whereby Odfjell acquires 100% of Flumar. The transaction comprises contracts and ownership of four ships, which are transporting chemicals primarily along the Brazilian coast, where local flag is a requirement. The agreed total price for the four ships on a 100% basis is about USD 50 million. Odfjell's shipping activities in Brazil have increased substantially over the last years…

Norwegian Shipowner Implements SAFIR 4.0

Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Skipsrederi AS (KGJS), one of the largest shipping companies in Norway has completed the first implementation stage of SAFIR 4.0; a comprehensive safety reporting system developed by BASS and Gard Services AS. BASS will, in addition to upgrading from SAFIR 3.04 to SAFIR 4.0 in the office, also install SAFIR 4.0 onboard the KGJS managed vessels. KGJS operated SAFIR 3.04 with paper-based reports from their vessels and entered the reports manually into the system back at the office. By installing SAFIR 4.0 onboard their vessels, the system becomes complete. All reports are entered by the vessels themselves, and automatically forwarded to the office via BASS Replicator/KGJS mail system. Feedback/experience transfer is dispatched back to the vessels in the same manner.

Rutter Wins VDR Contracts

Rutter Technologies has won contracts to supply its Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) to the Norwegian Kristian Gerhard Jebsen (KGJS) fleet and to the Greek shipping group comprised of Kristen Navigation Inc., Anangel Maritime Services Inc, Alpha Tankers & Freighters International Ltd. Under two separate contracts KGJS will order 24 VDRs and the Greek fleet owners 56, for a total of 80 units. The VDR Market - International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations require certain classes of vessels to carry a voyage data recorder and Rutter estimates that there are 1,500 such vessels being built each year. Additionally, the IMO is requiring existing cargo vessels greater than 3,000 GT and travelling in international waters to be retrofitted with a VDR by 2010.
