Navy Tech in Paris Navy Technolgy Takes Center Stage

Many commercial marine products evolve from military roots. At Euronaval last month in Paris, contractors large and small from around the globe showcased new and emerging technologies. According to General Electric, there is a new era dawning for naval engineering and propulsion. “I’ve seen the future of naval propulsion, and it’s electrifying,” said GE Power Conversion’s Captain Mark Dannatt Royal Navy (retd.), speaking at Euronaval. Capt. Dannatt’s comments came as he outlined the latest advances in advanced naval electrical technology from a GE perspective.

STX Rauma Shipyard Starts Production

Start of production of the new Finnish Border Guard offshore patrol vessel at STX Rauma Shipyard. STX Finland Oy’s Rauma Shipyard started the production of next generation offshore patrol vessel to be built for the Finnish Border Guard. The start of production at the Rauma Shipyard was carried out following traditions. Chief of the Finnish Border Guard, Lieutenant General Jaakko Kaukanen pressed the launch button. The event held in the steel construction hall was witnessed by the representatives of the Finnish Border Guard, the Finnish Environment Institute, STX Finland and the classification society Germanisher Lloyd, and members of the press.

Wartsila, Metso Jointly Develop Scrubber Systems

Wärtsilä recently signed an agreement with Metso Corporation to co-operate in developing and delivering scrubber systems for marine applications. Under the terms of this agreement, Metso is to supply the scrubber unit, while Wärtsilä is responsible for world-wide sales and integration, including automation, water treatment, and ancillaries. Both Wärtsilä and Metso have experience in the use of scrubber technology for land-based installations. Wärtsilä and Metso have already worked together for a number of years in the development of scrubber technology. In 2005 the two companies, together with other companies within the Finnish maritime cluster, embarked on a program to develop a feasible marine scrubber. By autumn 2007, the project was ready for a test installation.

Wärtsilä Scrubbers Certified for Sulphur Oxide

After performing successfully in a series of tests, the Wärtsilä sulphur oxides (SOx) scrubber has been granted the Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA) Compliance Certificate by the classification societies Det Norske Veritas and Germanisher Lloyd. A scrubber is an after treatment technology for cleaning exhaust gases of sulphuric oxides. Wärtsilä's solution is the first ever marine scrubber to be awarded this certification. Prior to the successful Wärtsilä tests, the use of scrubbers as an efficient and cost-effective alternative to the use of low sulphur fuel for reducing SOx emissions from ships, had been questioned. Ceremony Celebrates Completion Of First Vehicle-Passenger Ferry For Turkey

Following the launch in December of Osman Gazi-1, the first of two Auto Express 88 fast car ferries for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, an Inaugural Voyage for Representatives of the Operating Cities of Turkey was held on Monday 12th March 2007. This was to commemorate the successful completion of sea trials prior to the ferry traveling to Istanbul to commence operations. Designated to operate on a 39 nautical mile reciprocal service across the Marmara Sea between Yenikapi (Istanbul) and a new port development in Mudanya servicing the city of Bursa, Osman Gazi-1 is scheduled to enter service in April 2007, the same month the second ferry will be launched.

Austal to Build Ferries for Istanbul

Austal announced that a contract for two high speed vehicle-passenger catamarans has been signed with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. This follows the submission of a fully compliant proposal with the lowest price offer in an international tender that began earlier this year. To be operated by Istanbul Deniz Otobusleri (IDO) the identical new ferries are scheduled for delivery in 2007 and have a capacity to carry 1,200 passengers and 225 cars or 126 lane metres of trucks plus 158 cars. The origins of Turkey’s large fast ferry fleet can be traced to 1987 when the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality founded IDO to develop sea transportation solutions and thus help ease growing traffic congestion.
