GL Renewables Certification Contracted by AMSC

GL Renewables Certification (GL RC) was chosen by AMSC to conduct the A-Design Assessment of its 5.5MW full conversion offshore wind turbine (WT5000FC). The A-Design Assessment comprises a thorough evaluation of the turbine, ensuring that it meets the requirements of GL RC's "Guideline for the Certification of Offshore Wind Turbines, Edition 2005", which addresses the safety philosophy, quality assurance and engineering integrity of the turbine, and verifies that the turbine complies with the standard in terms of its load assumptions and design. "Certification and design validation are essentially for technically reliable wind turbines", explains Andreas Schroeter, Managing Director of GL RC.

GL RC Certifies Alstom Tidal Turbine Prototype

Tidal energy is a new realm of renewable energy. As technology advances, GL Renewables Certification (GLRC) is contributing its expertise by certifying Alstom’s tidal turbine prototype. Certification of tidal turbines is one of the key development areas for the tidal industry in the future, and represents a major milestone for Alstom on the REDAPT project. GL RC and Tidal Generation Limited (TGL, now rebranded Alstom) have worked closely together to achieve ‘C-Design Assessment’ certification for Alstom’s full-scale 1MW tidal turbine. “The certification was carried out according to our Guideline for the Certification of Ocean Energy Converters,” said Andreas Schroeter, Managing Director GL Renewables Certification.

GL Renewables Certification (GL RC) has certified Deutsche WindGuard Offshore GmbH's Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) courses. Helicopter transport is an important way for technical personnel to reach offshore wind farm installations, but before getting on board, a certified training course must be passed. GL RC certifies training providers to its standards, which set out the fundamental prerequisites for efficient training, such as proper organization of the training course, careful documentation and high-quality teaching equipment and materials.

GL RC to Certify KHI's Tidal Energy Converter Prototype

GL Renewables Certification (GL RC) is will certify Kawasaki Heavy Industries' (KHI) tidal energy converter prototype. The certification will be carried out according to GL RC's "Guideline for the Certification of Ocean Energy Converters" and other relevant GL RC rules and guidelines for marine and offshore structures. KHI's tidal energy converter is currently under development at KHI's Akashi facility and will soon be installed at the European Marine Energy Test Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland/UK. The prototype certification by GL Renewables Certification will include assessment of the prototype design which demonstrates the fulfilment of the requirements in relation to design, fabrication, installation and operation.
