DNV GL Looks for Partners in LIDAR JIP

The international accredited registrar and classification society DNV GL calls on industry stakeholders to jointly develop acceptance criteria for LIDAR-measured Turbulence Intensity (TI).The world’s largest resource of independent energy experts said in a press note that it is "calling on wind energy stakeholders to join a new Joint Industry Project (JIP) to explore the potential of using light detection and ranging (LIDAR) to measure wind speed TI for various applications in the wind industry."According to the Norway-headquartered organization, measuring meteorological conditions such as wind speed and TI is essential for assessing and verifying the feasibility of new wind energy projects.

NY-BEST & DNV GL Jointly Open Service Center

The New York Battery and Energy Storage Technology Consortium (NY-BEST) and DNV GL (formerly DNV KEMA) today announced the opening of the new state-of-the-art Battery and Energy Storage Technology (BEST) Testing and Commercialization Center in Rochester, New York. The Center’s services include a suite of test, validation and independent certification capabilities that are necessary to introduce new energy storage technologies into the marketplace and accelerate integration of renewable and distributed energy. Created through a partnership between NY-BEST and DNV GL with seed funding from New York State, the BEST Test and Commercialization Center is an independent global testing and commercialization facility.

GL RC Certifies CG Transformer

Transformer manufacturer CG has received certification from GL Renewables Certification (GL RC) for its liquid immersed SLIM and “Bio-SLIM distribution transformer.” The hermetically sealed transformer is also available with a bio-degradable transformer fluid which reduces the risk of pollution at environmentally sensitive locations, such as offshore. GL Renewables Certification Contracted by AMSC

GL Renewables Certification (GL RC) was chosen by AMSC to conduct the A-Design Assessment of its 5.5MW full conversion offshore wind turbine (WT5000FC). The A-Design Assessment comprises a thorough evaluation of the turbine, ensuring that it meets the requirements of GL RC's "Guideline for the Certification of Offshore Wind Turbines, Edition 2005", which addresses the safety philosophy, quality assurance and engineering integrity of the turbine, and verifies that the turbine complies with the standard in terms of its load assumptions and design. "Certification and design validation are essentially for technically reliable wind turbines", explains Andreas Schroeter, Managing Director of GL RC.

GL RC Certifies Alstom Tidal Turbine Prototype

Tidal energy is a new realm of renewable energy. As technology advances, GL Renewables Certification (GLRC) is contributing its expertise by certifying Alstom’s tidal turbine prototype. Certification of tidal turbines is one of the key development areas for the tidal industry in the future, and represents a major milestone for Alstom on the REDAPT project. GL RC and Tidal Generation Limited (TGL, now rebranded Alstom) have worked closely together to achieve ‘C-Design Assessment’ certification for Alstom’s full-scale 1MW tidal turbine. “The certification was carried out according to our Guideline for the Certification of Ocean Energy Converters,” said Andreas Schroeter, Managing Director GL Renewables Certification.

Northwind NV To Build Wind Farm off Belgian Coast

Northwind NV received statements of compliance for site assessment and site specific design assessment from GL Renewables Certification (GL RC). The Northwind Offshore Wind Farm will be located on the Bank Zonder Naam (Lodewijkbank) off the coast of Zeebrugge, Belgium. Construction of the wind farm, which includes 72 Vestas V112 turbines, begins this year, with completion scheduled for 2014. The statements of compliance were presented to Frank Coenen, CEO of project developer Northwind NV, at the Offshore Wind Power USA conference in Boston.

Siemens Wind Power Turbine Certified

Siemens Wind Power has received offshore prototype certification from GL Renewables Certification (GL RC) for testing its new 6 megawatt offshore wind turbine at DONG Energy's Gunfleet Sands III demonstration project in the UK. This will be the first offshore test of this new offshore wind turbine. Morten Pilgaard Rasmussen, head of research and development at Siemens Wind Power received the Prototype Certificate from Axel Dombrowski, GL RC's head of department machinery components and electrical engineering, at Siemens' R&D Headquarters in Brande, Denmark.

Deutsche WindGuard Offshore Helicopter Underwater Escape Training Certified

GL Renewables Certification (GL RC) has certified Deutsche WindGuard Offshore GmbH's Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) courses. Helicopter transport is an important way for technical personnel to reach offshore wind farm installations, but before getting on board, a certified training course must be passed. GL RC certifies training providers to its standards, which set out the fundamental prerequisites for efficient training, such as proper organization of the training course, careful documentation and high-quality teaching equipment and materials.

GL Certify Siemens' Prototype Offshore Wind Turbine

GL Renewables Certification rendered to Siemens for its new 6-megawatt offshore wind turbine SWT-6.0-154. The prototype certification is a prerequisite for the testing of the turbine. Field testing of Siemens Wind Power’s new 154-meter rotor for the six-megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine was carried out in Østerild, Denmark earlier this month. Siemens Wind Power developed its new 6-megawatt wind turbine for use at sea. The direct-drive wind turbine is equipped with what are currently the world's longest rotor blades – each blade measures 75 meters in length. With a record rotor diameter of 154 meters, each SWT-6.0-154 turbine can produce 25 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity in offshore locations, enough to supply 6,000 households.

Certification for Siemens SWT 6.0-154 Wind Turbine Prototype

GL Renewables Certification has provided Siemens Wind Power prototype certification for its new six MW offshore wind turbine SWT-6.0-154. The prototype certification is a prerequisite for the testing of the turbine. Field testing of Siemens Wind Power's new 154-meter rotor for the six-megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine began in Østerild, Denmark, on October 6, 2012. Bent Weibel, Head of Product Integrity at Siemens Wind Power, received the Prototype Certificate from Mike Woebbeking, Vice President of GL Renewables Certification, at the GL Group's Head Office in Hamburg on October 8th, 2012. The Prototype Certificate confirms the compliance of the wind turbine design with the requirements of the Executive Order from the Danish Energy Authority No.

GL RC to Certify KHI's Tidal Energy Converter Prototype

GL Renewables Certification (GL RC) is will certify Kawasaki Heavy Industries' (KHI) tidal energy converter prototype. The certification will be carried out according to GL RC's "Guideline for the Certification of Ocean Energy Converters" and other relevant GL RC rules and guidelines for marine and offshore structures. KHI's tidal energy converter is currently under development at KHI's Akashi facility and will soon be installed at the European Marine Energy Test Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland/UK. The prototype certification by GL Renewables Certification will include assessment of the prototype design which demonstrates the fulfilment of the requirements in relation to design, fabrication, installation and operation.

GL Renewables Certification appointed Rüdiger Urhahn as Vice President Project Management & Sales, with responsibility for worldwide customer management in the area of certification services, in January 2012. In addition to sales duties, Mr Urhahn has been given the task of overseeing all customer projects relating to wind, solar and marine energy. GL Renewables Certification is one of the leading certification bodies in the renewable energies sector, particularly in respect of type, component and project certification as well as design assessment. Urhahn has extensive professional experience in project management and international sales. With a degree in aerospace engineering, he has spent the past 20 years overseeing international projects in a variety of senior management roles.

GL Renewables Certification Updates Type Certification for Vestas' V52 Turbine

Vestas Wind Systems has received an update of the type certificate for its V52-850 kW wind turbine from GL Renewables Certification (GL). Vestas Wind Systems expanded its manufacturing portfolio for the V52 wind turbine to its hubs in China. The type certificate has been updated and now includes production of this wind turbine type in Vestas' new manufacturing facilities in China. The Type Certificate confirms that the V52 wind turbine complies with the requirements of the International Standard regarding design, power quality and verification of the load assumptions.

Gamesa's G52 Wind Turbine Receives GL Certification for 50 and 60Hz Operation

Brussels/Belgium, Hamburg/Germany, 14 March 2011 - Gamesa received a Type Certificate from GL Renewables Certification (GL) for their wind turbine G52-850 kW Class I, for both grid frequencies, 50 and 60 Hz. The Type Certificate confirms that the wind turbine G52-850 kW Class I complies with the requirements of the GL Guideline for the Certification of Wind Turbines, Edition 2003 with Supplement 2004 regarding design, power quality and verification of the load assumptions for both grid frequencies.
