ABS to Class STL's New Very Large Ethane Carriers

Maritime classification society ABS will class four new 98,000 cbm Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLECs) ordered by China's Zhejiang Satellite Petrochemical (STL)These ethane-fueled VLECs are part of a Phase-2 order from STL and South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries and Hyundai Heavy Industries will build two VLECs each.ABS, which was the classification society of choice for the first order of the six dedicated VLECs by Reliance Industries in 2014, says that these 87,000 cbm VLECs have been successfully trading and laid the foundation for the next generation of larger VLECs.

SpaceTech4Sea Gets AIP for LNG Fuel Tank

ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to a conceptual design for carbon fibre LNG fuel tanks, in what it describes as a ā€˜milestoneā€™ for a project to adapt space industry technology to small-scale LNG fueling.SpaceTech4Sea project sees ABS, OceanFinance and Cimarron Composites joining forces to adapt composite technologies developed for the space industry to LNG shipping.Backed by EUR1m funding from the European Union, the project explores whether composite technology, which is lighter and more cost-effective, offers a competitive alternative in LNG as marine fuel designs, principally for short sea shipping.ā€œThe potential of this technology to reduce barriers to the utilization of LNG as fuel for short sea shipping is significant.

ABS Issues AIP for Jiangnan for VLGC, VLEC Design

The class organization American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has granted the approval in principle (AIP) for the LNG Jumbo, two next generation gas carrier designs from the Chinese Jiangnan Shipyard Group.ABS granted AIP for a 91,000m3 Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) Panda 91T design and for the ā€œBrilliancEā€, a new 99,000 m3 Type B Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC) Bluebonnet design.ā€œABS is proud to support the pioneering work of Jiangnan in the design and delivery of gas carriers. LNG Cargo Ready Notation for Ethane Carriers

American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), the provider of classification, technical, and regulatory services for the marine industry, launched the industryā€™s first LNG Cargo Ready notation.The development was announced at a joint event with GTT, highlighting progress towards delivering ā€œLNG Cargo Readyā€ ethane carriers.The ABS LNG Cargo Ready notation confirms that an ethane carrier is capable of future modification to trade LNG cargoes. AEC Collaborates with ABS for ULEC

ABS, KOMERI Collaborate on Safety of LNG as a Fuel

ABS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute (KOMERI) to create a new facility dedicated to improving the safety of LNG as fuel.ABS and KOMERI will collaborate on research at the shoreside facility, which will allow shipowners to safely test fuel gas and bunkering systems, under actual loading conditions, prior to installation onboard.ā€œABS is proud to partner with KOMERI on this important facility, which will help ensure safe and effective testing of new equipment and ultimately advance adoption of LNGā€¦

ABS Awards AIP to HHIā€™s Deepwater FLNG Hull

ABS granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to Hyundai Heavy Industriesā€™ (HHI) Deepwater Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) hull design.HHI advises the Newbuilding Conversion FLNG hull design for offshore application can be constructed for about 80 percent less than the cost of a conventional FLNG hull. It is based on LNG carrier designs combined with the requirements for FLNG production, such as structural reinforcements to take topside module load and a hull designed to allow up to 25 years operation without dry-docking.ā€œABS is the market leader in the classification of offshore drilling and production units, including FLNG vessels, with more than 150 floating oil and gas facilities in the ABS-classed fleet,ā€ said ABS Vice President Global Gas Solutions, Patrick Janssens.

ABS Issues AIP for Jiangnanā€™s LNG Jumbo Carrier

ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) for the LNG Jumbo, a new 175,000 CBM liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier design from Chinese shipbuilder Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Co.The efficient, environmentally friendly design features the GTT MK III Flex Cargo Containment System developed in cooperation with ship designer MARIC.The LNG Jumbo design specifies a WINGD X-DF low-pressure, low-speed two-stroke dual-fuel main engine propulsion system promising enhanced propulsion efficiency and reduced fuel consumption, combined with additional energy saving devices.

ABS to Class Singapore's First LNG Bunker Barge

Singaporeā€™s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker barge scheduled to begin construction in January 2019. The 7,500 cubic meter capacity barge will be owned and operated by a joint venture between Shell and Keppel Offshore & Marine, FueLNG Pte Ltd, who selected ABS to class the vessel.To help spur the project, Singaporeā€™s Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) recently granted up to $3 million to FueLNG Pte Ltd to build the barge. The vessel will be based in the Port of Singapore and will supply LNG fuel to large oceangoing vessels throughout the region.ā€œThis project is an important milestone for the region and is a key component of Singaporeā€™s strategy to become the worldā€™s largest bunkering port,ā€ said ABS Vice President Global Gas Solutions, Patrick Janssens.

ABS Issues AIP for Containerized LNG System

ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to TECHNOLOG for a liquified natural gas (LNG) fuel gas container system.The portable tank system, which will ultimately come in 20- and 40-foot containers, is designed to be filled at land-based LNG terminals and shipped to vessels via rail, road or cargo ship before being loaded onboard an LNG-fueled vessel. BC Ferriesā€™ Spirit of British Columbia Converted to LNG

Spirit of British Columbia, one of two BC Ferries vessels that will use liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel, has finished conversion at the Remontowa Ship Repair Yard S.A. in Gdansk, Poland and has returned to service for the Canadian operator.The 1993-built ro-pax ferry Spirit of British Columbia was the first to undergo conversion while its sister vessel, the Spirit of Vancouver Island, is expected to complete conversion during the spring of 2019. The 550-foot ABS-classed vessels are the largest ships in the BC Ferries fleet with a capacity to carry 2ā€¦

ABS Approves New VLEC Concept

ABS, a leading provider of classification and technical services to the global marine and offshore industries, granted Approval in Principle (AIP) for a new very large ethane carrier (VLEC) concept developed by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. ā€œAs demand for different types of liquefied gases increases, concepts like this will expand the infrastructure and enable more efficient transportation to get products to market,ā€ says ABS Vice President for Global Gas Solutions Patrick Janssens. The novel VLEC is equipped with a specialized membrane cargo containment system suited to carry liquid gas cargoes such as ethane and propane. Designed with a minimum cargo temperature of -94ā„ƒ, the concept supports a low cargo boil-off rate.

ABS to Class LNG Bunker Barge

ABS, a leading provider of classification and technical services to the marine and offshore industries, was selected by Q-LNG, LLC, to class an Articulated Tug Barge (ATB) for LNG bunkering in North America. ABS, GasLog Study to Simulate LNG Boil-off

ABS, a leading provider of classification and technical services to the marine and offshore industries, and GasLog LNG Services (GasLog) have completed a joint development project demonstrating a new approach to evaluating LNG boil-off rate (BOR). GasLog is an international owner, operator and manager of LNG carriers, providing support to international energy companies as part of their LNG logistics chain. ā€œBy expanding the application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to simulate the LNG BOR in cargo tanks, owners are able to better predict boil-off gas and account for it in future designs and operations of LNG carriers,ā€ says ABS Chief Technology Officer Howard Fireman. LNG boil-off gas is the vapor phase of LNG carried in a cargo tank.

US-built Liquefied Gas Barge Delivered

Harvest, an ABS-classed articulated tug barge (ATB) purpose-built to transport liquefied anhydrous ammonia, has been delivered to a subsidiary of Savage Companies by U.S. shipbuilder Vigor. ABS Approves New MOSS-type LNG Tank Concept

ABS informs it has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) for a new MOSS-type liquefied natural gas (LNG) tank design concept developed by Japanā€™s Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI). Designated as an IMO Type B independent tank, the concept takes a new approach by applying a non-spherical tank design to increase the use of space on board an LNG carrier. According to KHI, the non-spherical design concept allows Panamax-size LNG carriers to expand their total carrying capacity to 180,000m³, a 25,000m³ volume increase when compared to using spherical tanks. In issuing its AIP, ABS reviewed the strength and fatigue analysis to support KHI in demonstrating the feasibility of the new concept.

ABS Approval for Chiyoda's Floating LNG Power Plant

ā€œAs the energy mix shifts and global demand for gas increases, concepts like this will reshape how energy is supplied,ā€ said ABS Vice President for Global Gas Solutions, Patrick Janssens. This concept offers a new approach to delivering new sources of power to remote areas of the world. The conceptual design is based on existing LNG carriers which are converted into floating power plants with small (~72 MW) to medium (~400 MW) scale power generation capabilities. In reviewing Chiyodaā€™s floating LNG power plant concept, ABS said it applied its relevant Rules and Guides to confirm that the conceptual design meets the intent of applicable class requirements.
