Iridium Launches Portable Satellite Hotspot

Iridium Communications Inc. today announced Iridium GO!, the industry’s first portable satellite hotspot that connects to any smartphone or tablet, dramatically extending voice and data coverage for personal devices when they are out of range of cellular networks. Iridium GO! creates a satellite-backed Wi-Fi zone anywhere on the planet, enabling up to five smartphones to make calls, get their email, text and use some apps, even when terrestrial networks are non-existent, unreliable or costly.

Xantic and GMPCS Sign Agreement

In a mutually beneficial strategic alliance, satcom provider Xantic has announced the signing of an agreement with GMPCS Communications Inc. for the delivery of various enhanced services in the United States and beyond. Under the terms of the new agreement, GMPCS will play a leading role in hosting Xantic’s Regional BGAN service in North America. GMPCS will deliver this service to companies and organisations with an international network, especially those working in the Middle East and North Africa. This move also represents a strategic step towards the future, when the BGAN service will become available. In a further development, this month will see GMPCS start delivery of its own messaging service called GMPCS Speed Mail.

Telenor Purchases GMPCS Personal Communications

Telenor Satellite Services, a subsidiary of Telenor of Norway purchased GMPCS Personal communications, Inc., based in Pompano Beach, Florida. Founded in 1996, GMPCS Personal Communications is a full service provider of global mobile personal communications via satellite. The company is a supplier of equipment, accessories, and value-added solutions and serves many Fortune 500 and Global 1000 corporations. The company realized revenues in excess of $23 million in 2003, a growth of more than 60 percent over 2002 figures.

GMPCS Places Order for Broadband Terminals

GMPCS Personal Communications placed an initial order with Hughes Network Systems for 1,000 HNS 9201 broadband satellite IP terminals for use with Inmarsat’s Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) mobile satellite service. The deal with Hughes makes GMPCS the first satellite communications service provider to place an order for the terminals that will usher in the new global broadband service anticipated to begin in late 2005. The capabilities of BGAN will include the delivery of Internet and intranet content and solutions, LAN and WAN connectivity, video on demand, videoconferencing, fax, e-mail, phone and local area network access at speeds of up to 492 kbps.
