India's Centre of Excellence in Maritime & Shipbuilding (CEMS), a well-funded startup in skill development for maritime and shipbuilding sector has announced thatits hi tech labs at Visakhapatnam are ready for starting orientation programmes for trainees. A seminar was held on 13th July 2018 in Vishakhapatnam to inform stakeholders about the facilities in the labs and to begin the process of training. This is shortly after CEMS announced the readiness of its Mumbai labs. CEMS is promoted by Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) in partnership with Siemens and Ministry of Shipping. Its Visakhapatnam campus is located in the Indian Maritime University (IMU) premises.

Rolls-Royce said it has reached a deal with Indian naval shipbuilder Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) to cooperate in the local manufacturing of technologically-advanced MTU Series 8000 engines. Under the agreement, which was signed this week at the defense trade show Defexpo in India, the companies will assemble the 16-cylinder and 20-cylinder MTU Series 8000 engines at GSL’s new facility in Goa.The MTU brand produces large diesel and gas engines and complete propulsion systems as part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.The agreement includes transfer of MTU technology related to localizing of engine components, engine assembly, testing, painting and major overhauls. MTU Series 8000 engines are the largest and most powerful MTU diesel engines with a power output of up to 10 MW.

The Indian Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel INS Sunayna, a state-of-the-art front line platform of the Indian Navy is on an Overseas Deployment to Abu Dhabi to participate in the International Defence Expo 2017 (IDEX 17) and Naval Defence and Maritime Security Exhibition 2017 (NAVDEX 17) in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates). The ship entered Mina Zayad port, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on 18th Feburary 2017. INS Sunayna will be participating in various events as part of IDEX 17 and will also utilise this opportunity to foster stronger relations with other friendly navies participating in IDEX 17 / NAVDEX 17. Built is Goa Shipyard Limited, INS Sunayna, is a fine example of India’s warship building capability and the promotes ‘Make in India’ concepts in the international exhibitions.

Indo-Mauritian maritime defence Co-operation got another fillip with the delivery of first Fast Patrol Vessel, MCGS VICTORY, designed and built in-house by Goa Shipyard Limited(GSL) for Mauritius Coast Guard, on 26th September 2016 at GSL. The vessel is primarily designed for Coastal Patrolling, Anti-piracy, Anti-smuggling, Anti-drug Surveillance, Anti-poaching Operations, and Search and Rescue Operations. The vessel is 50 meter long, fitted with 30 mm CRN-91 Gun, 12.7 mm HMGs & 7.62 mm MMGs besides state-of-the-art Navigation and Communication equipment and is capable of achieving a high speed of 35 knots. Significantly, trials were undertaken in peak monsoon months and the vessel achieved all design parameters. The ship was ceremonially handed over by RAdm.

South Korea's Kangnam Corporation will jointly build 12 mine countermeasure vessels (MCMV) in India in collaboration with India's state-owned Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), reports Hindustan Times. The project comes under under the Modi government’s Make in India programme and is likely to cost more than Rs 32,000 crore ($4.8 billion). “We are in the final stage of concluding the contract. It should be done in three to four weeks,” Hindustan Times quoted GSL chairman Rear Admiral Shekhar Mital as saying. The navy needs to fill gaps in its mine warfare capability. Its existing mine counter-measures force consists of six vessels bought from the erstwhile Soviet Union in the late 1970s. It requires 24 minesweepers.

Sri Lanka's Minister of State for Defence Ruwan Wijewardene  visited the Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) at the Vasco town, located around 40 kms from Panaji in India and inspected Sri Lankan ships under construction, the Press Trust of India reported. He inspected the progress of the two Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessels (AOPV) being built for Sri Lanka Navy at Goa Shipyards. Wijewardene held discussion with GSL Chairman and Managing Rear Admiral Shekhar Mital  along with the shipyard officials on the progress of the ship building process. They also visited an almost completed similar type AOPV being built for the Indian Coast Guard to see the facilities and equipment fitted on board. The first AOPV is scheduled to join the SLN fleet in August 2017 and the second one year after.

The Indian Navy's indigenous offshore patrol vessel, INS Saryu, will participate in a week-long ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Disaster Relief Exercise (DiREx). According to an official statement, the vessel is commanded by Cdr Sreekumar Pillai and operates under the Andaman and Nicobar Command. The aim of ARF DiREx is to exercise information sharing and networking among national agencies of this region towards providing Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) during natural calamities like Earthquakes, Tsunami, and so forth as well as Search and Rescue (SAR) for ships and aircraft lost in the sea. Co-hosted by Malaysia and China, the exercise will kick-off on Sunday in Malaysia and see the participation of Thailand, apart from India.

According to an August 9 release from India’s Press Information Bureau, the Indian Navy has recommended introduction of modern and emerging techniques in shipbuilding in the country in order to reduce the built periods. The Chief of Naval Staff has been encouraging the participation of capable private shipyards to augment shipbuilding capacity in the country. The Mazgaon Dock Limited, Mumbai, Goa Shipyard Limited Vasco-da-Gama and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited, Kolkata are being modernized to augment and improve their production capacities to keep pace with the Naval requirements. Hindustan Shipyards Limited, Visakhapatnam has also been added to Defence Shipyards also to address the concerns of the Navy.

According to reports, Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) has launched two vessels and commissioned one all on a single day. All three vessels have been designed and built by GSL for the Indian Coast Guard. The two vessels launched include an Extra Fast Patrol Vessel (XFPV) and an Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel (AOPV). The 105 metre long AOPV will be the biggest vessel ever built for Indian Coast Guard. The XFPV will be the fifth in the series built by GSL. The commissioning of XFPV Coast Guard Ship Subhadra Kumari Chauhan was held at MPT jetty in Vasco. The 266 ton vessel is 50 meters long and is primarily designed for patrolling, anti-smuggling and anti-terrorist operations.
