Charity Golf Event to Benefit Mercy Ships

Liberty National Golf Club Gets its own Brix-built Water Taxi

Port Angeles, WA-based Brix Marine delivered a new 4615-CTC luxury water taxi, Liberty National I, to Liberty National Golf Club after launch and sea trials in Port Angeles Harbor. Armstrong Marine USA announced it is building a 46’ x 15’ planing catamaran, dubbed Liberty National I, at its Port Angeles, Wash. facility for delivery this spring. Liberty National Golf Club selected the Armstrong Marine USA design last year, ordering a vessel to transport passengers between North Cove Marina in New York and the private club’s dock in New Jersey.With a USCG COI for 30 passengers plus two crew, Liberty National I will accommodate the club’s robust membership.

Analysis: South China Sea Stand-off Led to Mob Violence

As a thousand Vietnamese rioters stormed his factory on Tuesday night, smashing windows and ripping down Chinese-language signs, Taiwanese executive Henry Yeh hid with a colleague in the back of a fire truck, clutching the only weapon he could find: a golf club. "With that many people surrounding us, it was useless. I was afraid they would kill us," said Yeh, 27, who works for a Taiwan textile company at an industrial park in the suburbs of Ho Chi Minh City. Yeh and his colleague eventually escaped unscathed. Others were not so fortunate. What started as heated but peaceful nationwide protests against Chinese oil-drilling in a patch of the South China Sea claimed by Vietnam exploded into two days of rioting that left hundreds of Chinese, Taiwanese and Korean factories damaged or destroyed.

Record 52 Cruise Ships to Visit Liverpool in 2014

Liverpool Cruise Terminal said it will break its previous record next year with 52 cruise ships scheduled to call, bringing 70,000 visitors to the city. Among the cruise liners making their Mersey debut in 2014 will be the new MS Europa 2, Ruby Princess and MSC Magnifica. The high points of Liverpool Cruise Terminal’s fast-growing popularity were revealed at a conference organized by the Mersey Maritime Group trade body. During the cruise terminal’s first full season of operation in 2008 there were just 13 calls, rising to 42 calls last year.

USMMA Golf Fundraisers Set 2013 Competition Dates

The Heidmar Blue & Gray Golf Classics are fundraisers for the U.S Merchant Marine Academy and its Department of Athletics. The tour nets over $400,000 annually and is attended by USMMA alumni, parents, friends and members of the international maritime community. In 2012, the tour saw 1,274 golfers which is the third-highest total of all time. Final 2012 proceeds are predicted to be near record numbers as the tour continues to grow in scope and size. The tour will stop in 11 cities next year and attract over 1,200 golfers nationally.

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education, welfare and morale of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced today its 19th Annual Tribute to the United States Coast Guard’s Seventh District will take place on Friday, November 2, 2012. U.S. Navy: The Business Case for a Titanium Ship

Participants at a workshop exploring the use of titanium structure for ships found that it is not only possible to construct a ship hull from titanium—or Ti, it could be cost effective. The workshop was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and hosted by the University of New Orleans, where an ONR research program on titanium ship structures is being conducted. Representatives of the shipbuilding industry, titanium suppliers, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force labs, and academia discussed and examined materials, processes and applications. Most ships today are primarily made from steel.

On Monday, July 26, Foss Maritime, Harley Marine Services and Sause Bros. sponsored the 11th annual Towboat Invitational at The Golf Club at Newcastle. The tournament brings together almost 300 people in the towboat industry all raising money for two deserving organizations, The Heart Institute at Virginia Mason Medical Center and the Boys and Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon. Towboat 2010 was another sold out tournament despite the economic downturn within the marine industry.

Passing of Molly Murphy Crowley

Molly Murphy Crowley, 71, of Piedmont, Calif., Crowley Maritime Corporation board member, past Portland, Ore. real estate mogul, philanthropist and competitive amateur golfer died March 21 following an illness surrounded by her family at her Indian Wells, Calif. vacation home. Mrs. Crowley was born Nov. 27, 1938 in Portland to Dorothy and Peter Murphy. She was the third of eight children, and attended grade school at St. Thomas More Catholic School and high school at Holy Child Academy in Portland, and college at Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y.
