Konecranes and Chantiers de l’Atlantique, a shipyard in St. Nazaire, France, have signed a contract for the delivery of a Konecranes Goliath gantry crane. It will handle large ship blocks and panels over the dry dock, playing a leading role in ship assembly at the shipyard. The order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2019.The Konecranes Goliath crane will be delivered with the cooperation of both parties. It will be manufactured in Europe by Konecranes in its entirety. The crane assembly on-site and the erection work will be done in cooperation between the shipyard and Konecranes.

The underwater mineral exploration company headquartered in Toronto Nautilus Minerals Inc. is currently negotiating the terms of an agreement with arm's length third parties that would involve the creation of a new joint venture company - Vessel JV - to be owned by the third parties and Nautilus’ subsidiary, Nautilus Minerals Niugini Limited (NMN).The purpose of the Vessel JV would be to fund the acquisition of the Production Support Vessel (PSV) that Nautilus had previously arranged to be procured through MAC Goliath Pte Ltd (MAC) and the integration costs of installing the mining equipment on the PSV.The Vessel JV would own and operate the fully integrated PSV.

Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding has canceled the construction contract for the Nautilus Minerals’ Production Support Vessel (PSV), a part of the Nautilus’ Solwara 1 project located offshore Papua New Guinea. "We have been notified by Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding, the owner of the shipyard where Nautilus’ PSV is being built, that the Shipyard has rescinded the shipbuilding contract between the Shipyard and MAC Goliath, the contractor engaged by Nautilus to procure the construction of the PSV on behalf of Nautilus," said a press release from the company. MAC was hired by Nautilus to procure the construction of the PSV on behalf of the company, it explained. "The Shipyard’s notice of rescission is in response to MAC’s failure to pay the third installment of the contract price (USD 18mln + interest).

The largest gantry crane in the Nordic countries was delivered to Meyer Turku shipyard by Finnish Konecranes. The goliath crane will be used to build increasingly large cruise ships at Meyer Turku shipyard with an even higher degree of industrialization.“Normally we are the ones delivering large high tech products to our customers, but this time we are the customer. Coming off of three straight profitable years, Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku said it is using its profits to finance a 200 million euro ($237 million) investment program at its Turku shipyard.The cruise ship builder reported its 2017 revenue was 807.7 million euros ($959 million) compared to 2016’s 787.5 million euros ($935 million). Net profit for the financial year rose from 26.2 million euros ($31.1 million) (3.3 percent of revenue) to 32.2 million euros ($38 million) (4 percent of revenue).Meyer Turku delivered two ships in 2017, the first time in decades.

The Kone Cranes built crane has a 2,500 ton main beam and was put into use over the weekend. “This new high tech crane is an essential part of the ramp up of our production. Eighty-seven vessels owned or managed by Crowley Maritime Corporation recently received the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA)’s annual Jones F. Devlin Awards in recognition of their 2016 safety records. Each year, the CSA grants Devlin Award certificates to manned merchant vessels that have operated for two or more years without incurring a Lost Time Injury (LTI), highlighting the skills and dedication of the crewmembers responsible for safe vessel operations. Crowley’s 2016 Devlin Award-worthy vessels together have achieved 670 years of service without an LTI.

As summer slowly fades to memory and commercial vessels have less frequent encounters with recreational vessels of all sizes, shapes and descriptions on America’s inland waterways, it might be a good time to review a strange, but not completely unusual incident that occurred in Louisiana on a navigable channel in the lower Mississippi River late last May. A workboat was pushing a small barge through a narrow tributary on a job to deliver it to its destination approximately twelve miles away from where the transit originated.

The second of the largest warships ever built for the U.K. Royal Navy, the Queen Elizabeth Class carrier HMS Prince of Wales, was given the royal seal of approval when HRH The Prince of Wales, (or Duke of Rothesay, as he is referred to in Scotland), visited Babcock’s Rosyth Facilities and signaled for the final section to be lowered into place, shipbuilder BAE Systems announced. The 570-metric-ton block – known as Sponson 11 – was the final section of the 280-meter-long warship to be manufactured.

Mammoet, a service provider specializing in engineered heavy lifting and transport, has lifted up a 120-meter-high crane for its installation in the port of Szczecin in Poland. The Goliath crane was built by Van Haagen Kraanbouw in the Netherlands and transported to the fabrication site of Bilfinger Mars Offshore. Mammoet constructed a tailor-made gantry with a height of 127 meters especially for this project – the tallest gantry ever built by the company in Europe – to execute this lifting operation. Gantries normally raise loads from an overhead beam between two supporting towers.

Konecranes will deliver a new 1,200 ton Goliath gantry crane to Meyer Turku Oy. The design, precision drive components, electrical installation and automation system and structural components will be supplied by Konecranes, while Meyer Turku will manufacture the main girder in its own hull production. The new crane will be taken into use in May 2018. The order also includes a modernization of the Turku shipyard’s current 600 ton crane, service and maintenance parts. “The first major step of our big investment program for Turku yard is becoming concrete. The new crane will allow for more industrialization and increase output capacity. The new crane will be a nice continuation of our collaboration with Konecranes that already started in the 1970’s with the building of our old 600 ton crane.

Contracts for unique equipment supplies were awarded during the visit of Rosneft Chairman of the Management Board Igor Sechin to China. Zvezda Far East Shipyard and Nantong COSCO Heavy Industry Co.,Ltd(CHIC) have signed a contract for the supply of 9 cranes for Zvezda shipyard in the presence of Igor Sechin, Rosneft Chairman of the Management Board. The document was signed by Evgeny Kraynov, Zvezda Project Leader and Zhao Zengshan, General Manager of Nantong COSCO Heavy Industry Co. Ltd. According to the contract, CHIC is to supply equipment with unique characteristics to the construction site of Zvezda shipyard in 2016-2017 – a 1200 t Goliath crane, four 320 t cranes and four 100 t cranes. In addition, Zvezda Far East Shipyard and Suzhou Dafang Special Vehicle Co.

The Aircraft Carrier Alliance successfully lifted one of the final sections of the second Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier in Rosyth on Friday, January 8 following its arrival from Glasgow. The 750-metric-ton block was raised 25 meters in the air using the Goliath crane and placed on the deck of HMS Prince of Wales, bringing assembly work on the ship significantly closer to completion. This section to be assembled is known as the Aft Island and will control aircraft operations aboard HMS Prince of Wales.
