Moore Stephens: Ship Operating Costs to Rise in 2018, 2019

International accountant and shipping consultant Moore Stephens says total vessel operating costs in the shipping industry are expected to rise by 2.7% in 2018 and by 3.1% in 2019, according to our latest survey.Responses to the firm’s latest annual Future Operating Costs Survey revealed that drydocking is the cost category likely to increase most significantly in both 2018 and 2019, accompanied in the latter case by repairs and maintenance. The cost of drydocking is expected to increase by 2.1% in 2018 and by 2.3% in 2019…

Ardent Earns ISO 9001:2015 Certification

Ardent, formed just over a year ago as a merger of A.P. Moller-Maersk’s Svitzer Salvage and Crowley’s Titan Salvage, has been issued the ISO 9001:2015 Certification for its Quality Management System for Preparedness, Emergency Response, Wreck Removal, Decommissioning, and Diving Services by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance. Multipurpose Shipping Awaits an Elusive Recovery

The multipurpose shipping market is not expected to recover until the end of 2017, when it is anticipated that there will be more bulk demand for the Handy vessels and therefore more breakbulk cargoes for multipurpose vessels, according to the latest Multipurpose Shipping Market Review and Forecast 2016 report published by global shipping consultancy Drewry. The last 12 months have been dreadful for the multipurpose vessel (MPV) market with rates at rock bottom and competition for cargo from every angle. Weak demand, coupled with falling commodity prices and the oversupply of tonnage in competing sectors has brought rates down to levels not seen since just after the global financial crisis.

Jeff Lantz to Address Upcoming Interferry Annual Conference

The conference organizers inform that In a further response to the sinking of the South Korean ferry 'Sewol' in April, safety issues will be centre stage at InterferryÂ’s 39th annual conference, which takes place in Vancouver from October 4-8, 2014. Prompted by the incident, the trade association is already in dialogue with the IMO about assisting in efforts to improve domestic ferry safety. Now these and other cooperative safety initiatives will feature in a wide-ranging conference agenda addressing the industryÂ’s major regulatory, commercial and technical challenges. The IMOÂ’s latest safety strategy will be examined by special guest speaker Jeff Lantz, US Coastguard regulations director and chairman of the IMO Council.

RINA Granted Danish LNG Fuel Authority

International classification society RINA has been authorized by the Danish Maritime Authority to act on its behalf to carry out plan approval and surveillance during construction on board ships using LNG as marine fuel. The authorization is valid for ships flying the Danish Flag. Andrea Cogliolo, head of innovation, RINA Services, said, “This authorization recognizes RINA’s expertise with gas and will allow us to assist owners in Denmark who are actively considering conversions to and newbuildings with LNG fuel.

TT Club Works Toward Safer Supply Chain

Freight transport insurance specialist TT Club said it is continuing its efforts to reduce risk in the supply chain. Through constant analysis of the claims it receives, the international insurer has pinpointed an array of operational circumstances that more commonly cause dangerous incidents resulting in bodily injury, sometimes death, and significant loss and damage to cargo, equipment and property. Port Accidents are Avoidable

Speaking this week at the industry forum, ASEAN Ports and Shipping in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, TT Club’s Regional Director for Asia Pacific, Phillip Emmanuel, showed evidence that a very high percentage of the insurer’s claims were due to some kind of operational error. The majority could have been avoided through good management practice. Emmanuel highlighted the main areas of concentrated risk and presented effective recommendations to minimize these incidents. Leading transport and logistics insurer TT Club’s latest analysis of 9,500 claims over the past seven years, valued at $400 million, confirmed an ongoing trend in avoidable damaging events that resulted in claims.

Panama Canal Nominated for Award

The Panama Canal has been nominated for the 2013 Prince of Asturias Award by the Spanish Ambassador. The Prince of Asturias Award is an annual prize presented by the Prince of Asturias Foundation to promote and reward scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work carried out at an international level by individuals, institutions or groups of individuals or institutions. They are conferred in eight different categories: the Arts, Literature, Social Sciences, Communication and Humanities, Technical and Scientific Research, International Cooperation, Concord and Sports.

World Fisheries Congress Opens in Edinburgh

HRH The Duke of Rothesay addressed global fisheries leaders on sustainability. The world’s fisheries community gathered in Edinburgh today (Tuesday, 8 May) to discuss the future of sustainable fishing at the 6th World Fisheries Congress. Organised by The World Council of Fisheries Societies, the congress is being held at Edinburgh International Conference Centre and will address “Sustainable Fisheries in a Changing World”. The event draws leading international figures influential in driving debate and shaping global policy on fishing.

EIMA’s Resource Management training in Middle East

Emirates International Maritime Academy (EIMA) has announced that it has expanded its maritime training resources by becoming a Maritime Resource Management (MRM) provider in the Middle East after recently signing a licensing agreement with the Swedish Club Academy, a company associated with the Swedish Club, a lmarine mutual insurer from Sweden. The agreement was signed by Captain Jaafar bin Sidin, Director of EIMA, and Martin Hernqvist, Managing Director at the Swedish Club Academy.

Thomas Miller Helps Renovate of Africa’s Oldest Ship

Believed to be the oldest ship still afloat in Africa, the 124.6 ft long motor ship Chauncy Maples is to be renovated as a floating clinic to bring primary health care to half a million of the world’s poorest people living around Lake Malawi. The necessary funds are now being raised by the Oxford-based Chauncy Maples Malawi Trust with considerable support from Thomas Miller, a London-based specialist insurance company, which has chosen to make the renovation of Chauncy Maples the focal point of its 125th anniversary celebrations.

Keppel Deliver KFELS B Class Jackup

Keppel FELS Limited (Keppel FELS) will deliver a jackup to a wholly-owned subsidiary of SeaDrill Management (SeaDrill) on time and within budget. This is the third KFELS B Class rig that Keppel has completed within the first four months of 2006. During the christening ceremony of the jackup on April 21, 2006, Mr Choo Chiau Beng, Chairman & CEO of Keppel Offshore & Marine Limited (Keppel O&M), shared with the 300-strong guests, “The on-time delivery of the jackup is a showcase of the good management and execution of Keppel FELS. This rig is the first of four jackups that Keppel FELS is building for SeaDrill. Construction of the other three rigs is progressing well in accordance to schedule. Their expected deliveries are between mid 2007 and second quarter 2008.
